How can you tell its air rifle rated?

I've been doing much research regarding scopes that can handle the dual recoil that springers and piston rifles cause. I have a list of some of those, mostly from air rifle sites, but how can you tell whether scopes are, in fact, able to handle the jarring springers cause? Is an AO (adjustable objective) rating a "sure thing" when it comes to deciphering air gun worthy? I see that some say "magnum", but I don't know if that is for firearm nomenclature or if to denote if it can handle the air gun or not. I looked at some of the big hunting suppliers: CB, BP, and despite cross-referenceing those I've read here and elsewhere, there was nothing to denote that scope would work on an air gun. I came across another site that actually rates them as light, medium, and heavy recoil, but they do not sell the type I have to figure into the equation.
I am new to being interested in air guns- rather than just buying one for kicks and having it sit in the box somewhere else. I am fairly happy with my setup, but a friend suggested to me with firearms that the glass should cost as much as the gun... I'm sure that can be debated, nor am I looking to drop that much cash, but would like something with adjustable magnification and objective. I'm not into the illuminated reticle and can do without. I just want the scope to last as long as the air rifle I have.
Much thanks.

Thanks for the link. I did see that, and started to check those sites, but the sites do not mention anything regarding their air gun (perhaps more demanding: springer guns). I did find "Barska" scopes that advertise air guns and the dual recoil, but not much else. I've been looking at PA for examples, but they only have a few brands available. Perhaps they're good enough.

Why is there air? For shooting of course.

Sadly, manufacturers normally don't list whether or not a particular scope is airgun rated and to what level. There are many options out there for magnum springers but we are left to find that information ourselves. The best advice is to call customer service about a particular scope if you are unsure. Also, the warranty offered plays a big role for me when shopping for new glass.
I definitely agree with your friend on getting good glass. Do it right the first time and be better off in the long run.

Perhaps you could post what gun you want to mount this scope on?
It may not be as hard on scopes as some, that are known "scope killers". I have found a few cost effective scopes, that are fine...but only for up to "mid-high" powered rifles. On true "Magnums", the choices are far fewer. The Centerpoints might interest you, and are generally available at Wmart, so you can look through them yourself.
G'Luck on your choice! Mike

Thanks everyone. The rifle I am looking to mount a scope onto is a Stoeger X20S (B19). It is my first "nice(r)" air rifle, although I now know it is not anything special. I did buy it locally from a sportsman's shop and thought it was nicer than those I had seen elsewhere. It has about 750 pellets through it, dieseling is finally starting to subside, but the spring recoil is "there", for lack of a better term. I don't have anything to compare it to: whether low, med, or hight. I would like to get nice optics for it but want to do it right the first time and not "buy cheap, buy more."
Thanks for the advice. I assumed that scopes on related websites would be okay with air rifles, but from what I have been reading, springers are not in the same category when compared to PCP, multi, etc.
I am sorry if I am asking too much, but have spent hours reading up and have only come across certain info regarding springer scopes. Nothing too concrete out there on ratings.

I would recommend the Centerpoint 4-16x40AO IR at Walmart. If anything goes wrong you can take it right back and get a new one. Barring that Crosman warranties their scopes for life.
