Bumbling Bull-headed Buffoon Building Basic Barrel Band But Baffled
BigBird:
What are the basic features and designs of a barrel band that make it secure and helps shot to shot consistency? Like, tight lock-up, orings for free movements, or reduce movement as much as possible, how do you ensure it returns to same point each time, how do you make sure it doesn't hit and throw it off??
I hesitated putting a barrel band on my gun because I've had them move and change POI. I don't like the fact that if you are shooting too far one way you can adjust with the barrel band. That means if it slips you miss!
I worked a little and made one from some scrap aluminum that I had (existing hole didn't match up too well on the top). I did the holes by hand. The internal orings were done freehand. It's hideous I know.
I also didn't want to make it too thin. So it is pretty wide. I can put some camo on it for turkey hunting! The barrel portion holds 2 orings side by side and there are two high tensile 1/4-20 Socket screws turned down to fit in each side. Screws have flat ends that tighten up to the 3/4 outside ring on the fill port. It seems to tightens fine. Should they have points to dig in??

Your putting baffles in a barrel band?

No. It would need more displacement of air than a hollow BB could provide, even this big. You can't really see them but there are 2 orings to allow for some movement of the barrel hopefully without hitting the BB, moving it or the barel and throwing the shots off. That's what I was thinking anyway.

When I made my barrel band I tried to duplicate the previous one except the new barrel was a larger diameter. I concentrated on the center dimensions and use an indicator mark to realign. No orings.

That looks nice and done well. Was this for a Crosman? How do the set screws work in aluminum? Are they coarse or fine thread?
