There's no such thing as cry once buy once because those guys will run after the next carrot once its dangled in front of their eyes... Most of these X vs Y threads are really subjective.
I think it depends. There are some high end guns that can be disappointing due to one's heightened expectations, as well as some rather stellar budget guns that may surprise people. If we could name brand names I think the discussions might become even more interesting.

Hello all! This discussion is just theoretical for me as I have both (as do many of you), but it may be helpful to those considering getting into the sport. Let’s not make it about brand names, but rather, do you think it best to start out with a below $500 rifle or an above $800 rifle and why?
If I had to pick my first PCP today it would be one of the super solid Eastern European guns.
