Benjamin 392s
« on: June 10, 2021, 08:57:16 AM »
A sheer purchase of opportunity...
Had a couple GTA buddies over this past weekend and one of them happened to bring a new 392s. It caught my eye. I wasn't looking at these guns because I'm and old school wood and metal kinda guy but, I couldn't stop sneaking peeks at it. I was actually handling it when Betty Lou came out on the deck where we were shooting. It caught her eye too and game over.
Ended up buying that gun and making arrangements to order another. That's what happens when there are 2 shooters in the family, things are bought in pairs.
I then went on a hunt for Williams peep sights as they are pre drilled for the sights. No luck there... nowhere to be found at this point.. dang pandemic has everything upside down.
So, I 'borrowed' the peep off of 'Copper", Betty Lou's Sheridan, until they come back in stock... (PA says August). This will be Betty Lou's gun.
As for mine, I bought a Weaver rail that clamps onto the receiver. I have a holographic red dot that will be mounted.
Both rear sight options should overcome that crazy high comb on these stocks.
Anyways, I thought I would get a thread started to share our experience with these new synthetic stock versions of the classic pumpers. Mine should be in house early next week and we'll get some pics and stats going.

BTW.... this is the rail I ordered. Disregard where it says "rail not included". The one I ordered includes the rail.
Notice how it clamps onto the breech and not the barrel.

The 5DSH peeps seem to be made of unobtainium,  these days. I've had one on order, through my gunshop, for over a month. Still no joy.
What I find odd is, my 78 dan isn't drilled & tapped, for a peep. No big deal. I can do it, in my sleep.
Just seems strange,  that's all.

Yes, there was a window of time where they didn't drill and tap them. I have a '68 BS (Eddie) that wasn't D&T. I super glued the peep on and so far it's been holding. Some day I'll D&T it. But that particular gun has some significant sentimental value and I'm somewhat reluctant.

Just got word that the second 392s is on it's way. Maybe Saturday but probably Monday. The rail should be here Tuesday.

That looks like the same Rail I have on mine.  Found it at a great price on Amazon.  Said it was used but like new, the thing looked like new to me, not a mark on it anywhere!  I had a set of super low rings and a 4X32 scope and after mounting, the height is just about perfect.   I have a micro red dot like you'd mount to a pistol, that will probably work well on it also.  I'd still prefer the peep sights, but it will work until those arrive.  I also used a white acrylic paint pen to put a dab of white paint on the front blade sight, this will help immensely once the peep arrives.  It's the same pen I use to make my tracer pellets!

I did sight it in last night before it got too dark.  It was too hot to go sit 20 yards from my target, so I zeroed it from inside my back room at 37 yards.  I was shooting with just 4 pumps, so I was really stretching it, bit did get it shooting 1" groups in the bulls eye.  That rail make it a bit more of a chalet to load the pellets, so another plus to having the peep sights.

I have that Tru Glow red dot that I got from Don last weekend so we'll see how that goes before I knock the Williams peep off of Eddie.

More good news...
I just received word from another horses mouth that we will be shutdown all next week due to the microchip shortage. Then we will return for the following week. The next week after that we will begin our 2 week summer shutdown. Being a salaried employee, my pay will not be interupted.
Who's better than me? ... lol

No need to worry about pellets. I just talked to Betty Lou, she's going to get started on the honey-do list, right away.
You can thank me later.  :D

I did have that same raised Pic rail on mine, got it from Amazon for about $32 but it was just too high plus I could not get a purchase on it to pump it up all the way without exerting pressure on the scope itself so  returned it.

This is what I use now, a Mac-1 rail with some super low rings and it is *almost* perfect. I would say Still a quarter- to half-inch too high but overcomeable. I was shooting three-shot one-hole groups at 15 yards briefly before it got too hot.

Also finally managed to get the Froggy LDC adapter to fit, the thing is now as quiet at 8 pumps as the bare barrel at 2 pumps:
