That can vary on the class of FT you are planning to shoot, let us know then we can narrow it down.
mwgm2020,If you have an air rifle that is under 20 foot pounds and accurate (10 shots inside an inch) out to 55 yards, you may use that rifle for field target. If this is your first field target match, I would contact the match director and ask for a loaner rifle (with a parallax adjustable scope, case, pellets, pellet pouch and hold-over chart) and related equipment (seat and shooting sticks) if available. You will be paired up with an experienced shooter. Since it will most likely be in the woods, I would bring insect repellent, water, snacks and a portable seat. You will most likely start with Hunter Class since it is the easiest class to get started in. It is the most popular and can achieve a very stable shooting platform with very little discomfort or body contortions. You will still be required to shoot one lane standing (off hand) and one lane kneeling (or standing if kneeling is not an option). You can shoot prone for the rest of the lanes but most shoot sitting on a seat of some kind. Very few people are willing to carry around a prone shooting mat from lane to lane.Don't expect to score well. Just enjoy shooting an air rifle in the woods with people. Knocking down a field target with an air rifle at an unknown distance is fun for some people and some it is not.As with all shooting sports, wearing eye protection is required as well as signing a waiver.Good luck and enjoy,Leo
Thanks, Leo. I am downstate from Lebanon, about 2 hours, and was thinking of participating in one of CAG's events. As for 10 inside 1" at 55 yards, I don't generally have access to that distance to shoot. Would 10 inside 1/2" at 25 yards compare? Can I use the gun's magazine instead of single loading?
So a basic question. Is there an advantage or preference to shooting .177 vs. .22 in FT?
Lighter pellets have flatter trajectory for given velocity/power level but are more susceptible to wind drift. Heavier pellets have loopy trajectory for given fps/fpe but less wind drift tendencies. It depends of if you are planning to shoot in 12fpe classes or 20 fpe hunter class. Also which pellet does your FT gun prefer at ranges from 10 to 55 yards. Many variable to consider to give a specific answer. Trial and error is the best approach and ask/see what other shooters are using.
Hmm I thought fathers day meant us fathers got to do what we wanted to do on our day or at least that's how I have done on fathers day. Its my day to do as I please.Go shoot FT if that's what YOU want to do. BD

Besides I have plenty of me time opportunities. Whatever works for you and your family is good.
