Title: Bad scope
Post by: PGunner on May 17, 2021, 02:29:43 PM
I have about 5 scopes my R9 killed they don't make good planters so what else can I do with them?
Toss them?

Hang em on the wall as TROPHIES ::)
This is a good time to mention that it's helpful to buy scope brands from vendors that have good customer warranty policy. Hawke is a pretty good "scope vs $" and they do have a good customer service reputation when something goes wrong (I've used them a few times over the years).

Some may still be useful as spotting scopes separate from the gun.

I had a scope that the reticle wouldn't move.  The teenager next door took it apart and fixed it.  He still uses it.  I guess if you have the patience and dexterity, the possibility is there to fix them.

As with all things that stop working.... targets.

I just used one to replace a burned out laser on my Grade shooting device :)

This scope died from dropping the gun it was on BTW.

Dead scopes make great wheel chocks. If you keep breaking decent scopes with an R9 you might want to look into barrel droop issues.

Depending on the issue, some of them may not be 'dead'.

I had a Vortex Diamondback not more holding zero on a Diana 350.  Nowadays, a cousin of mine is in deep love with it on a PCP.

I watched some videos on fixing them and if you take them apart fix them snd put them back together what would stop them from going bad from the same shock that that killed them in the first place.
I guess I don't have the tools to do it nor the want to, to do that so I guess they stay in my junk drawer.

Also if you take them apart you loose the gas charge and they will fog on the inside on temperature changes. Find the cause of your scope killing, fix that and get a good scope.

As far as what is killing my scope (R9 Break barrel) other than that I don't know, some of the scopes I have had on it are in the $150 range.
If you have any other ideas on what could be wrong with the gun causing that I would be more than willing to try it and if it worked I'd give you a big thanks. ;) ;D

I am pretty sure my HW95 in less than two tins killed my $250 UTG with etched glass reticle, supposedly springer rated. Some kind of white powder was floating around inside. They replaced it no questions asked
$$$$ doesn’t mean survival.

Since the I have installed a kit to debuzz and cut three coils from the spring. It’s running about 15fpe with a Hawke Vantage. The Vantage line they say shouldn’t be on a springer over 12fpe. But it’s lasted more than twice as many shots

You may need to improve the internals of your gun. Unmodified the shot cycle of mine was very violent. Now it’s smoother than my HW30.

I'd look into barrel droop. When you install a new scope does it shoot several inches low before adjusting it? Do you you have to turn the elevation knob up close to two full turns? If so you're running the scope maxed out or close to it. The fastest way to kill even a springer rated scope is to run them close to or maxed out in any adjustment. The erector tube is the tube inside the scope that holds the reticle. The turrets move that up, down and sideways by pushing it against a little spring. When an adjustment is maxed out (usually elevation with airguns) the erector tube bounces around during recoil and can rub on the inside of the scope body tube. This rubbing wears the aluminum and makes the dust Kurt sees in his UTG. Sometimes the reticle breaks or rotates. Running the scope with the elevation maxed out upward also extends the spring that's responsible for holding the erector tube against the turret adjustment. Now there's not sufficient spring pressure to hold the reticle in place and zero wanders. Many airgun scopes that don't hold zero, will if you dial them down a turn.

The fix is to get a good drooper mount like a Sportsmatch. Or bend the barrel up to where it shoots closer to the center of the scope adjustment.
If the right and left is maxed out make sure the rings are properly orientated and if they are then the barrel needs to be bent towards the scopes center of adjustment.

Buy better scopes.  Or at least scopes with a better warranty! ;) ;D

I'm not going to stick $200.  + into a scope and have to turn it in for repair every 2 months.
If you have an R9 or the equivalent let me know what scope you have and I'll check it out to see if I can afford it.
I here a little about barrel drupe but this gun has been this way sense I first bought it 14 years ago.
A Sportsmatch mount is around $70 and then $200+ for a scope and still not sure if that would work. Ah Ah no

So is there a way to check for barrel drop with out sticking a lot of money in it?

"I'm not going to stick $200.  + into a scope and have to turn it in for repair every 2 months."
LOL.....I wouldn't either but every couple years IF NECESSARY is acceptable to me.

Uh, look at it, i.e. does the barrel line up with the receiver. Using a straight edge might be helpful. By the way, "break barrels" can also have "SNOOP", especially if "triggered off" while the barrel is unlatched..........

Bottom line, if your only concerned about the cost of a scope simply buy a Leapers UTG 4-16x44 SWAT scope for about $170 which includes two piece mounts and a UTG Universal Dovetail to Picatinny/Weaver adapter for about $13 for a grand total of about $183 plus shipping..............

I have a Hawke 3-9x40 Airmax on my Hw95 (R9) and Sportsmatch T04C rings. I adjusted the barrel for the scope and it's been fine for 3 years and at least 10k rounds.

To check for droop, optically center the scope with the mirror method, mount the scope and fire it at ten yards. If your POI is 2" or more lower than your POA, there's droop. More than 3" low, it should be addressed, 4" low and most good scopes start running into problems. Especially if you are trying to get zeroed out at 40 yards plus.

Do what you can afford for a scope, but checking for droop cost nothing. Constantly replacing scopes because of it is expensive. I gave you the information, it's up to you to decide what to do with it.

Forget the scope and put a Red Dot or peep sight on the R9?

I'm thinking more of a red dot. From what I've seen on youtub that might be the way to go.

I've got both an R9 .20 and an HW95 .22 and both wear Hawke Airmax 4-12x40 scopes in Hawke Match mount rings. have yet to have any issues and neither rifle is tuned, both are stock guns.

Bayman, could you explain the 'mirror method' of scope centering??/   I have never heard of it and would like to try it on a couple of scopes I have.  Maybe then I could actually hit something, LOL!

It's hard to explain in text without getting lengthy. Google or YouTube Mirror method to optically center scope, there's a bunch of explanations and video tutorials on it already.

Yeah.  If you have barrel droop, a peep sight back where a scope would be mounted, probably wouldn't work either.
