Post by: Wingman on February 20, 2017, 09:56:58 PM

Next to Hesperia, mainly pest and plink where I live.

Lack of certificate means I cant go hunting yet. Would like to know a good place to go get the course and paperwork preferably cheep/free as I am pretty much flat broke. Its crazy to think people are so dang close and active.

Live in Vegas but my mother and sister live in Riverside I'm down there all the time. Trying to plan a pig hunt soon was thinking Yucipa area near the apple orchards just need to get permissions. Hoping some of the land owners will have a soft spot for a Vet and a few AG friends and will let us get rid of a few hogs.

I shoot coons pretty frequently out here in my large backyard in Mentone. Keeps me going on my nights off. There was a pretty cool airgun store around the corner where I live but has since closed.

I don't think many GTA'ers are regularly using the Regional Forum sections; I'm new to airgunning and in LA county.  Technically no shooting allowed here per municipal code in my city. Technically. The popular locations that powder burners use aren't always attractive to shoot at; it would be great to meet other local airgunners and find good places to shoot that aren't as loud.

I hear ya.. Well kinda anyway last time I went to the powder range was next to a couple guys sighting in 338 Lapua's.  Musta been hellacious amount of $$$ in ammo not to mention a concussion wave sent with each shot.

Dana Point where airguns are not illegal...  yet.

I do a lot of wheeling in SoCal area, BLM land and others where firearms, hunting and target shooting are allowed, but crossing paths with rangers/boarder patrol makes firearms more difficult. Stopping for lunch and doing some quiet shooting is less complicated.

I used to go out there about twenty years ago. It’s kinda narrow with little areas to shoot. It does get crowded, or it did back then. You can follow the road all the way up and it hits another hwy. Do pay attention to where you are, it borders the reservation and I have heard stories of stuff being confiscated if shooting on their land.

I was excited when I saw this post and then I see it is what it is. I'd enjoy a get together, even if its only a bull session where we can meet up someplace and have a sit down. You know, talk about mod ideas, maybe show off some stuff, or just get to know somebody who likes what we like.  I'm in south eastern Ventura county and L.A.'s SF Valley is just over the hill, though I'd prefer to stay on my own side of that line.  I'm on that member map thing if anybody wants to look there, I'd post a link, but those in charge do not deem me worthy of such actions, but at 20 posts I guess I will be.

I used to shoot up there 30 plus years ago when I worked downtown LA.  I don't have a PCP yet, just a couple of CO2's for quiet plinking with one 'okay' break barrel in .177, a Forge that I shoot with open sights, just because the scope is, well you know.  I just got back into air this year, sold off the last of the other guns a long while back. Honestly I started to miss it, punching paper I mean, propulsion method no longer matters to me, I see today's air shoot great at distance.

Perhaps once I get something that can compete at a decent distance I'll drop by. Or if I can manage it, just come by and watch if that is permissible?  What sorts of airguns are the most common at these matches?

I wouldn’t worry about the gun. Come by, check it out. If you show up without a gun I can almost guarantee someone would offer to let you share. We have guys shooting from low end pcp and springers to high dollar custom stuff.

We don’t use the range portion, we are off the access road shooting in the trees.

Looking to get some buddies who are interested in shooting too.

Riverside in the house!

Just moved to DT Riverside.

I used to live in Norco with 75 yards in backyard to shoot pellet guns.

Rauhaages shooting range real close nearby to shoot big bores and slugs

Looking somewhere cool to shoot big bores, slugs 100yrds...

Where can we safely shoot slugs?!?

Hey SoCal buddy. Well big bores and slugs are probably best left for an actual gun range if they allow.

Hello Mike,
Yes I agree slugs , bullets and big bores are best left for the range. I often have commented on the posting of the term "backyard friendly" that is over used cliche that is going to cause trouble to our community one day.
I shoot pellets with my .25 Maurader and full auto, bb guns at our Norco family home, but that is really pushing the limits of responsibility. The sad fact is that most municipalities and many counties in So Cal consider air rifles and bb guns the same as discharging a firearms. The house in Norco is only 1 mile across the Santa Ana River from Rahaugges shooting range. That is where I have to go and shoot my .257  I have to go on week days when it isn't so busy and I used to be able stretch things out beyond a bit over 100 yards. When Chris Rahaugge was there , I could shoot after hours, but I don't have it like that anymore. It is funny gearing up for a day at the range with powder burners. They think you are an idiot checking in with an air rifle. But once you get set up and are slinging lead and shooting 1/2 m.o.a. at 100 yrd small bore targets and you have all the gear with compressor, tanks and a chrony, people will eventual get curious.  I live near DT Riverside in my wife's house and I can't even set up a .177 pellet range in the driveway into the garage because too many neighbors....
Has anyone ever tried to get zoning to build their own private residential range? I think you have to get approval from the Sheriff first and then the city council has to approve a variance before the building dept will issue a permit. Plans have to be certified by a engineer and meet same specification as any other shooting range regardless if it's powder burner or air rifle.
That is really the only legal way to be backyard friendly. Even a slingshot is against the law to fire in most places! BLM land is the only safe place to shoot and be worry free of local ordanace and unsympathetic or clueless local law enforcement.
Despite the popular belief that our airguns are Red Ryder innocent, the trend with bigbore and high BC bullets is going to get unwanted attention someday. We need to organize and promote a positive image. The fact that many people publicly  find airguns less threatening, there is still time to promote ourselves. We can create and publicize airgun fun shoots and informal competition events for public participation. Sponsor scouting activities or even approach public parks and recreation for opportunity.  Our activity should be as acceptable as archery and could utilize areas in the public domain to enjoy ourselves. It's difficult shooting in the powder burner domain.  Airguns need accessible public spaces. We need exception to the same discharge rules as firearms. If we put the proper spin on it, we might actual pitch this as a solution to those within the gun control crowd and have them lobby for more generous places to practice our "backyard friendly" shooting activities?!?@???
I dunno pipe dream I suppose. But man if you were ever to actually fact check how difficult it is to LEGALLY  shoot an air rifle in So
Cal ..... it's kinda scary!
Be safe friends and stay outta trouble!!!!!

I am in an unincorporated area of Riverside county and in an area that all shooting is allowed as long as it is done in a safe manner. I have a niece that is married to a Sherriff Deputy and have had some of the Deputies shoot on the 5 acres I live on a couple of times. My airguns are no problem as long as I don't shoot toward my neighbor or the road. (I only have one that is "close")
