Title: Prolix - Treating Barrels and Lubing Pellets
Post by: ancient1one on May 20, 2015, 11:09:45 AM
My Cricket .22 is very accurate but after shooting 500 to 800 JSB 18.1 pellets the barrel would be fouled with lead and the gun would lose accuracy. The first thing I did was contact Allen Zasandy(airgun smith) to see what could be done about it. He recommended cleaning the barrel and lubing the pellets with Krytech or Slick 50.

A friend of mine has been into airguns for the last few years so I called him to ask what he knew about lubing pellets. He said try treating the barrel with Prolix then lubing the pellets with it. He also recommended cleaning the barrel with JB bore paste. So I ordered both products. After the barrel was cleaned with JB bore paste I ran 4 patches of Prolix down the barrel, then 1 or 2 dry patches. The dry patch had no lead on it and came out clean. It took shooting 25 pellets for accuracy come back after treating the barrel.

I shot 3200 JSB pellets through the barrel before any signs of lead build up. At 3250 the barrel needed to be cleaned. Lubing the pellets takes less than 5 minutes after the initial set up. 3 sprays of Prolix into a half a tin of pellets and shake gently. Let them dry for a few hours on a plastic sheet(I use the envelopes with bubble wrap on the inside) because news paper was too absorbing. I use a dedicated tin with foam top and bottom just for lubing.

The end result is I am now getting 4 or 5 times the amount of shots between cleanings. This is on both of my guns. Another plus of lubing the pellets with Prolix is it dries hard on the pellet so when you handle the pellet you get 90% to 95% less lead on your finger tips. If you have a barrel that needs to be cleaned often I highly recommend trying Prolix for treating the barrel and lubing pellets.

Do you still clean the bore with JB bore paste after 3250 shots or can something less abrasive be used?

I ran 3 patches of Prolix through then 1 dry patch. Prolix removed almost all of the lead as it lubricated the barrel. It is some amazing stuff. Im surprised this hasn't been spoken about in the airgun community.

This is off the Prolix website.

PrOlix is a penetrating solvent that has been developed over many years, used in industry, and rated the safest, most effective agent. Based on citrus technology (it has a pleasant, mild smell in contrast to petroleum based solvents), it is biodegradable and ozone-safe.

We took the results of field testing and modified the solvent for firearm usage. The end result was improved effectiveness, while remaining non-abrasive and non-acidic. In short, it won't remove or harm your metal or wood finishes. We do recommend that you test on plastics, in a small area (on the back side). If no adverse action is noticed, you may continue with complete confidence. Another benefit of using PrOlix is that total disassembly is not required.

The solvent seeks out dirt, oils, grime, etc. (even in small and impossible areas) and floats it away. The chemical action during cleaning developes the DRY lubricant and it is drawn into the pores of the material, creating a skin of protection.

Doesn't seem commonly available online.  But I'm sure when that happens it will be.  Sound like a great product from the video that I looked at.

Paul after you posted the question about JB Bore paste and Prolix I contacted the manager(Henry) and asked him what he thought. He stated Prolix:

"Its best not to use any other cleaning products anymore other than PrOlix® as the more you use it the cleaner it will stay as that is how DryLube works, and until PrOlix® can get rid of any petroleum (or synthetic copy) it won’t work its best!?!  It will just keep amazing you!"

Henry also stated after running patches of Prolix not to run a dry patch at the end like I said to do in my first post.

"It’s also not necessary to run a dry patch, maybe one that it not as wet, but wetter the better, it will dry in a short time and won’t throw off the first shots, that again is what’s great about DryLube!"

The 2nd time I treated the barrel it took 3 patches of Prolix and the barrel was spotless. No sign of lead or dirt. It took 25 - 30 pellets for accuracy to return after treating the barrel with Prolix. So it did throw off my first 25 shots, airguns are different.

Here is a link with Prolix distributes. The spray option is better for lubing pellets. http://prolixlubricant.com/wheretobuy.html (http://prolixlubricant.com/wheretobuy.html)

Thanks for the update Sam.  I had seen the supplier listing but was hoping to get it through Amazon or even Ebay.  May need to use one of those vendors if I decide to try it. Sounds like product worth trying.

I wonder if it has any negative long term effects on O Rings as used in airguns?

I have not heard of any o-ring's going bad due to Prolix. All 3 of my PCP's barrels have been treated with Prolix since the end of April. Both Crickets have been re-treated 3 times and only shoot Prolix lubed pellets.

One thing I do now that I did not do originally is after a barrel is treated/cleaned with Prolix I use non lubed pellets for the first 10 - 15 shots. Accuracy returns quicker this way.
