Title: I think I stepped in it this time...
Post by: Hoosier Daddy on March 24, 2017, 09:56:03 PM
In a "Jim Beam induced" moment I bid on a fugly C9 on gunbroker and NOBODY bid against me.  ::)
Low and behold I won. $70 and she is on her way to me... Seller says she shoots strong and I have a stock from a 392P of the same vintage.
Lets see what I can do for this diamond in the rough.

I know they make some kind of epoxy filler that soaks into the wood.
Then maybe a candidate for hydro dipping!

He says it does and the metal work looks in great shape. The stock was broken and repaired with some grey epoxy.
Original owner must have really slathered it on!
If it is a solid repair and I can sand off smooth I was thinking an different approach with some Ebony stain I have to mask it while I search for some decent furniture...
DANG my weak moments.

That ebony stain would look good. It probably has a lot of pigment in it, so coverage might be OK.

You might be able to get it looking pretty good with some serious sanding.  I'd consider spray-on bedliner before hydro-dipping though, the hydro-dipping thing is getting a little overdone these days.

Mr. Hoosier Daddy, since you have been cavorting with mr. james beam, I feel it is my duty to recommend Mr. Evan Williams as an alternative.  Black label (least expensive, and their flagship brand), or their white label (bottled in bond, 100 proof) are both excellent value bourbons, and IMHO are far superior to JB white.

You really think that will cover that fugly stock?
For my money... I would heavily mix that ebony with tru oil and rub it in baby.

If it was a real one I would agree with you, but since it's just a crosman ( nothing wrong with that but just not the same ) if I had that gun I think I'd spray it with blaze orange truck bed liner. Now that would be sweet, I don't know why but blaze orange and the outdoors just go together.

haha, awesome!  it does look rough, but I would reserve judgement on it until you see how it shoots.  looks are WAY secondary to performance.  Especially since you said that you have a backup stock.  My 1993 C9 is possibly the best shooting of all my benjamins and sheridans, so I would say that as long as the bore is in good shape and it shoots accurately, then you have a gem.

but since it's just a crosman

this gun is not a 'crosman' though.  it was made in racine by the same folks that made the C series streaks.

HA! Believe me, I have been "Beamed" more than once before by one of the 3 wise men... Jack, Jim, and Johnny. ;)

Yes, it's a Racine Benjamin made C9 with Serial # W074140. Billy (Flint) helped me identify it as a '92 over on his 392P, 397P, C9 info thread prior to the auction ending.
The stock I have off my '93 392P is cracked as well, that is why I replaced it.... but it was a good repair job. So, if it fits it might be put back in service until better wood is found. I am pretty hopeful on the swap fit because looking at the EVP of both they share MANY of the same parts. Almost seems this is a .20 version of my 392P internally. If so, a 39XP will broaden my possibility of finding some nice furniture for it some day.
I am thinking the ebony stain is the way I'll go if it sands out well enough. I do like my wood grain. I did NOT know you could tint Tru-Oil with stain, I have only stained the wood first then applied the Tru-Oil.  Thanks for that nugget of info Bill!
Title: Re: I think I stepped in it this time...
Post by: avator on March 25, 2017, 09:39:59 AM
You can add the stain to as many of the first layers as you wish. If and when you reach your desired darkness you can change over to pure tru oil. Or continue with the mixture. I never tried ebony but my bet is on it having some serious depth to the look. And if it turns out bad.... it's still better than what you have now...lol..... sorry.
And yes... The C9 was produced after Crosman had made the purchase however, they allowed the folks at Benjamin Sheriden to continue production on the C9 without design influence. I think we do ourselves a great injustice when we allow narrow mindedness to trick us into believing that the gun we own is better than anything else. Maybe it is better than anything else ... for you. I think we all remember the guy that thought nothing could out do the Daisy 880... until he got his hands on a Crosman 101. Then the 101 magically morphed into the "lost gun" of his childhood. I LOVE my Sheridans and rightly so.. the simplicity, the very heart and sole that Mr Kraus put into it oozes from each one of them. But, I also have a Crosman Blaze NP that I would shoot  up against anything in it's class from ANY country at ANY price. Lets set up some paintballs at 45 yrds out and shoot til the first man misses. Heck, let's just put up the pinks. And lets go one step farther.... I'll use Walmart pellets. Unweighed and unmeasured. I gotta tell ya, I got some real terds that really shine. And I think what you have right there is destined to be one shiny terd..... wait.... what?

It arrived last night, wood was just as ugly as described.  ;)
I does pump and shoot. but the is a small ding in the tube that causes a momentary "Drag" toward the open end of the stroke when the pumping.
It out past the Air hole so it does not effect the pump cup, rather the hinge point of the linkage as it passes by.
Think I will take it apart , measure the ID of the tube and try to find some round stock that fits tight enough to insert and try and work the dent back out.
Title: Re: I think I stepped in it this time...
Post by: Flint on April 05, 2017, 07:50:54 AM
hmmm, that's a bummer.  certainly the seller would have noticed that don't you think?

when you are working the dent out, I think I would try to find something to clamp around the outside of the tube also.  like maybe also find a piece of pipe whos inside diameter matches the outside diameter of the pump tube.  split the pipe in half and clamp the pipe around the tube so that when you run the round stock down the tube, you cannot blow it out or kink the tube when you run up against the ding.

kind of like resizing brass before reloading.  you want to support the outside while reaming the inside.

good luck!

have you tried shooting it yet?

Just dry fired it so far. I want to run a cleaning patch down the barrel, lube it a bit and give it a try.  It did hold a single pump of air for 24 hours when I checked it last night.
Also I can tell the spare stock from my 392P of the same vintage is shaped different because the 392P has a raised comb and the C9 doesn't.
What I do not know yet is if it physically fit. I do like the white spacer and butt plate on this C9.
The reason I have the spare stock for a 392P is mine came broken but had a solid, good looking repair job. If for some reason the C9 stock fails to clean up like I hope, this may be plan "B" while I watch for nice original C9 wood on e-bay.

Here is the shape of my 392P.

Scott,
Now in my case the temptation comes from the little green leprechaun that sits on my shoulder trying to get me to jump down the rabbit hole.

Kidding aside, it will be interesting to see how this works out for you and what can be learned for possible application somewhere down the path.

Good luck with this project.

Yes, the C9 and the 39X stocks are definitely a little different (well from 1991-1999 anyways, in the year 2000, they all became identical).

The C9 stock is a little longer due to the buttplate and spacer, and like you mentioned, the 39x stock has a faux raised comb.

However, while they look slightly different, the 39x stock will definitely line right up and screw into the action of the C9 no problem and vice versa.  I've done it many times.

I will keep you posted on the updates here Patrick.

Billy: that is conformation is good to know.
 Now to your previous post.
I am having a hard time envisioning how if I find a piece of pipe who's inside diameter matches the outside diameter of the pump tube, I could use it without splitting it lengthwise for the barrel... and that seems it would negate it's purpose.
What I was thinking, was getting something to fit tight inside and then use a soft faced mallet to lightly work the dent out from the outside...
The round stock inside the tube would be like a dolly in metal working to carefully strike against.
I have a soft head hammer and would go slow and easy... It wont take much to remove the binding because it does pump, just drags a bit (enough to annoy me) at that spot of the tube.

You can see from the same are in the linkage slot someone tried to get in from that angle before. Maybe they got it enough to pump and quite.

Yes it is.
Like I tried to describe, it just binds a bit in that one spot. You can pump past it but feel a resistance when the linkage comes to that spot shown.

The dent is not within the swept air chamber is it? I mean, the pump cup won't ride over it right?  Maybe you already said this...

After occasional stewing on this one, I started back in. It had become obvious this gun was a "Bitsa" (Bits a this and Bits a that).  ::)
The Pump tube was dented, the original finished pump arm was cracked half way, and that stock! Oh my, the stock had been broken, repaired, primered grey, then painted black. Gloss black paint was on the insides and the section of epoxy in the photos was just a thin shell where the was a chunk of wood missing. I mixed up some epoxy and used a Modelers trick called "Micro-baloons" to patched it up solid on the inside. I glued and clamped the pump arm then set it all aside.

I had pulled out the pump rod and have been searching for something that was a snug fit inside the pump tube to help remove the dent. Conduit, pipe, broom sticks, nothing fit. Either too big or too loose to use as a mandrel to help keep the round form.
I was out in the shop wrenching this week and when I saw my deep well sockets, it gave me an idea. I went in, grabbed the pump tube and found a Craftsman chrome deep-well 9/16 was a good fit. I put a long 3/8 extension in the socket backwards and slid it in, got to the dent and it stopped!
There is a slight taper  on the edge of the socket to act as a "lead-in", so I took my small ball-peen hammer and tapped it in until the dent was just past the edge of the socket. Then used a wooden dowel in the linkage slot and tapped it back out.... Repeated several times and it started moving easier.
I left it in place the last time and gently hammered around the edge of the dent and along the slot that was distorted from the previous owners pry-job to straighten it all out. Not hard enough to put a bunch of small dents in the brass, just enough to round it back out one final bit.
EURIKA! You can now barely see the damage and most important the pump rod slides in and out nice-n-easy!

So today after everything has cured for a week, I got out the stripper removed the rest of the grey primer off the stock and and took the original finish off the pump arm.pump arm. A couple of sanding sessions with 220, and it is all looking pretty good. I will use some wood filler in the odd small places, give it a bit and hit it with fine sand paper, then give her a coat of the Ebony stain later today.

I got a brand new bottle of Tru-Oil still in the wrapper to split between this C9 and the ol' FWB I picked up.
Glad I read the directions on the wood-filler. It says to stain the wood first. It must prevent the stain from soaking in if used on raw wood.
So, I got out the stain and slathered it up. Turns out the can I had thought was Min-wax "Ebony" was actually "Exprsso"... let it soak a bit then wiped it off. Deep, Dark, Brown... not black.  8)
Too windy to shoot today so I gotta occupy myself somehow.

But now hearing about that moonstruck fruit.... makes me thirsty. ;)

Appreciate the effort on getting that gun back and running.  I too like to give new life to the neglected tools of varying types.  The fun part is trying to improve on a already great design, if only I had a lathe and drillpress. ;D

Again with that list of airguns...... I think you need to unplug the internet when you bust out the gin and tonic there Missie..

I use the gin to help me get me through arthritis pain so I can click on buy or place an order. :P

Well the 2 coats of Tru-oil on this had a week to cure,  Being this is a repaired stock I wasn't going overboard on the sheen, Just something to seal it. You can see the repairs but in all honesty it doesn't look too shabby.
Cleaned up, lightly lubed, and reassembled... Just in time for it to start sprinkling rain outside.
I was able to take her out and squeezed off a half dozen shots and these two photo's before the downpour set in.
Dumps all of 8 pumps and shoots 30 yrds with a solid "whack" onto the target. Maybe I'll get a break in the rain and be able to sight it in later today.

Thanks folks!
I was able to get it sighted in this afternoon...  This one prefers the JSB's to the Benji Cylinders.
Wound up with a quarter sized group with 8 out of 10 shots at 20 yards on 6 pumps. Even with a stout breeze right to left and those open blade sights.
The little center paddle on the Crosman spinner sure flys around at just shy of the same distance.  8)
It does seem to pump easier than my C so maybe shooting a little weak.
Once it calms down out here I'll get out my android Chrono-connect and see what kind of numbers I get.

Yeah, that dark color looks like it did the trick. and I like the fact that you didn't make it look like it was set 1/4 inch deep in water.

HAHAHA.
I do have a way of "over restoring" things... I figure a high gloss would only show the imperfections.   ;)

It's not just that... Hi gloss on guns reminds me of that black Chinese furniture. I hate that furniture. I want my guns to look like tools not art. Besides, you've seen my picture. Any chance to not see my reflection is a chance well taken.

Scott :

Wow..Sharp !....Very Nice Repair on the Stock !  Looks Real Good !    ;D

I saw your before and after photos.... before and after the Photo-Bucket swindle.   Gee.. I am glad I'm a computer dummy. I never learned how to use Photo-Bucket.   :D

So..my real question is..How much Whiskey did it take to get your gunstock looking sooooo nice.       ;)

Best Regards. -  Tom     :)

I think this must be Scott's Irish coffee cup !

Looks like he was done with it after he finished work on his gunstock and pump tube.

wow, that looks great!  you did a really good job.

oh and I wouldn't read too much into how easy it pumps.  I've got a bunch of benjamins and sheridans and pump effort doesn't seem to have anything to do with power.  some just pump easier or harder than others, for some reason.  My C9 is also coincidentally very easy to pump, but shoots as hard as my other sheridans.

And just to drive this point home... the C9 that TennX got in the mail today is a beast after 5 pumps.

604
594
582
605

That is about 40 fps on average slower than my '74 C but DANG she is accurate at 20 yards with iron sights.

Reminds me of an old Marlin 336 I had before they came out with the Marshield.
