Title: Server upgrade
Post by: ezman604 on February 19, 2019, 12:25:20 PM
I just submitted a request to support, I was worried about our disk storage space. We have grown a LOT over the past few years. Anyway, we will be migrated over to a different server very shortly. Unfortunately they cannot tell me exactly when. They also said if there is any down time at all, it will be almost undetectable and will only involve a server reboot. For you technical types, we will be switching from a SATA drive based server to SSD based. Along with the improved CPUs and the use of solid state drives, we should see a dramatic increase in the speed of the forum. And we are also expanding our storage capacity.
Let's keep growing. And drop a nickel into the kitty when you can to make sure we continue to grow and expand.
Thanks to all of you for the growth and helping us reach the goal of being the best and most informative airgun forum on the world wide interweb.
And as always....
SAFE & Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Will these improvements allow us to post photos directly from our phones library? Currently I have to send it to myself; downsized, and then post it.

AFAIK this has nothing to do with the ability to upload photos. I'm not sure how to address uploading from a phone. This will upgrade our speed and storage space.

Load an app like photo and picture resizer on Android, or similar for your platform. Then you can quickly resize it in your phone before posting.

DL- I have had no problems uploading pictures from my phone if I go through the media gate. From there you can post directly into the threads.

I’m not familiar with the “media gate”..?

I didn’t mean to turn this into another “How do I load pictures” thread. But while we’re here... Is there something that can be done to make loading photos of larger file size possible? It might be useful. Couldn’t pictures posted then be zoomed in closer, and offer a better detailed view of the photos members are posting? Kinda like a higher megapixel count? I’m asking, because no have no idea.

It's a tab in the above list of shortcuts. It will virtually be the same as using an online host. I suggest using tinypic.com or some other hosting site to store your photos. By doing that you do not have any hassle of resizing and losing picture quality. There are two sticky threads in the Liz's Forum Help Desk explaining all the ways to insert photos in your threads. Yes, we have a Media Gate. Use it if you must but I don't think we have the space to support everyone loading high quality photos. It will eat up our storage space rather quickly. Try other online storage options first, but remember you CAN create an album here in the Media Gate to store and post photos.

This will be a very welcome upgrade as search times are a bit slow.

And I have adjusted the allowed size and almost doubled what WAS allowed for photos. Two issues with going any larger file sizes. First, it eats up space on the server. And the amount of photos getting loaded on the forum can eat up storage space at an alarming rate. And the other issue is bandwidth. A higher quality photo loaded directly takes longer to load and longer to paint when folks go to view it. Not everyone has ultra high speed internet. And again, this could eat up our bandwidth. I'm not really wanting to create more issues we have to deal with. Hosting photos somewhere on the internet lets the host absorb the bandwidth issues, not us.
I hope this helps explain it a little better.

Thank you for the info. I’m not a techie. So I ask dumb questions when it comes to computer stuff. I’ll try loading my photos int the media gate, and see how that works.

...Sorry for the derail... :-[

Not a problem asking questions. I'm sure you aren't the only person wanting answers to these questions.
