The 1950's Challenger Plainsman C22 air pistol
Good Grief - this thing is loud!
Just got through going through her and lubricanting all the seals - figured I'd give it a shot before attempting to replace them. Well, it paid off & she's holding air. I'm getting about 30 shots on full power with one 8 gram powerlet. I haven't attempted to mess with the power adjustments just yet though. I read that on the low power setting you can get about 70 shots per powerlet.
Overall, it's a very fun air pistol to shoot & an extremely LOUD one too.
I'm really glad that I stocked up on the 8 gram CO2 carts for my Benjamin 30/30 because I'm definitely going to be shooting this one a lot.
Edit: looks like these were made from (1954-1958)

Hey Geoff, thanks!
Unfortunately - I don't currently own a chrony to run any numbers on her.
I've run a hand full of different pellets through her and she doesn't seem to be picky.
The rifling seems to be pretty good too.
I can't stress how loud this thing is.
Neighbors must be making all sorts of phone calls now...

That is a sweet looking pistol! I hadn't heard of them before now.
Thanks for sharing!

This pistol was designed by Albert Dale Fogel who I believe also designed the Apache pistol as well.
This pistol is
very
well made. It has a blued steel CO₂ chamber and a rifled steel barrel. It was offered in both .177 and .22 calibers. It comes stock from factory with black tenite grips - I replaced mine with the American Walnut ones above. It has a fixed blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight & there is no safety mechanism - so, watch it!
Kinda weird - the CO₂ powerlet is pierced when the pistol is first fired as the hammer forces the piercing pin into the capsule - as opposed to the action of just screwing on the cap like most modern CO₂ air guns. The chamber isn't fully pressurized on the first shot. So, to prevent a jam - dry fire the pistol without a pellet loaded the first time around. A nice feature on this pistol is the pellet shelf! In front of the breech there is a small shelf where the pellet can sit without slipping off while loading.
It also has a nice power adjuster setting. The power can be adjusted by unscrewing the hammer knob. Depending on the amount you unscrew the rod controls how much the valve opens & how much power is then generated by the pistol. When set to high power - there is a noticeable recoil - similar to that of a springer.
The pistol measures roughly 9½” long with a 5″ steel rifled barrel. It roughly weighs about 1lb 15oz - without the CO₂ capsule housed in the chamber.

Neat AG Andrew!
Yeah, some of the older AG's are loud, but I sort of like that at times.
What's the accuracy like?

its unbelievably accurate with the stock iron sights.
i am flirting with the idea of adding a tang peep sight set up on it... if I can find one that will match up with the holes for the rear sight.
no issues with the current set up.. but I really enjoy a nice peep sight.

looking at this pistol today... i bet it would be real easy to put a longer barrel on it. i bet the CO₂ chamber could also be swapped out or even lengthened for a bulk fill if one was so inclined.
i'd be real curious to see... but, i'm not one for those sort of overhauls...
i think this pistol has a lot of potential.
as soon as i pick up a chronograph it'll be first on deck.. i am very curious to see what it clocks in at

Many of the older Co2 guns pierced the cart by pulling the trigger after first cocking it. Nice find.

you know - now that you mention it...
i think i had a hahn super repeater that did that too.
still pretty captivated by this pistol so everything about seems to stand out uniquely to me.
just ordered a peep i'm going to try and mount on the rear with the preexisting holes - if it doesn't pan out i'll have to see about seeking out someone to fabricate one for me.
