I got an old leaker with a damaged magazine a week or so ago. The cartridge seal was leaking and although that was an easy fix, the valve was also leaking and it wouldn’t come out of the valve body.
After a few days of soaking in WD-40 it finally came out. I guess you have to be patient with these old gals
Here’s why it leaked:
Resealed everything here (the cartridge seal I’m using is Crosman part # 38-128):
Next was the .177 cal barrel... a 10.1” LW from Crosman. It will be about 9.6” after the port is removed:
New breech end cleaned up. Ready to turn from .435” to .375”:
Finished... turned down, milled 0.5” radius, and a 7° leade cut with a .217” opening:
Some half-inch Delrin tube stock (drilled to .375”) to sleeve the “skinny” barrel:
Slicked-up the trigger group:
Made the bushings for the new magazine (it was very fortunate to have a spare magazine):
No leaks..... so all in all, a fairly productive weekend.
Ready to run it over the chrony and see if I can hit anything...

Well, I did hit some paper... haha, looks like Gertrude's avatar:
Here's the chrony:
You guys were pretty much correct. The average velocity was 491 with 8.44gr.
I need to get another red dot sight and a muzzle brake... more fun to come! Thanks
Rob, this one was cleaner but it also didn't work and had broken parts like the last one.

Thanks, Rob... yes, it cycles just like the .22.... so far, they’ve been pretty reliable with no mis-feeds or jams.
I ordered another red dot today so I can actually aim instead of guess. Also got the adapter ready... made from 6061 bar stock.
It has a small radius cut on the bottom so it will sit flat and not rock side to side:
As soon as the red dot shows up, I can locate the holes and d/t the adapter. Then it needs a finish… I have some Aluminum Black.. but if it works like the other “bottled miracles” I’ll be sanding if off and trying something else.

Rare because I'm a different kind of wacko
... I'll have more than the cost of a Rainstorm II into this before I'm done... and over 60 hr of work... all for a pistol... that isn't even pcp. But hey, that's why I like airguns - something for everyone
Also going to put a muzzle brake on this... still not finished!

The muzzle brake came today so I did a little carving on the sleeve... turned the last 1-3/8” to .437”
Shown with the raw tube stock below:
The half-inch tube stock was way oversize and also out-of-round... so it was drilled it to .375” first, and then a mandrel was used for turning.
The finish on the brake and the Delrin sleeve are both matte/satin.
It’s nice that Don Cothran offers different finishes for his stainless steel products:
Waiting on the red dot and then a little target shooting will be next

The red dot came and I did some target shooting. It was very disappointing - four to five inch groups at 10m were the best I could do.
Took the barrel off and cleaned it – no improvement.
Took the barrel off and rotated it 180° - no improvement
Took the gun apart and smoothed/reshaped the sear for a lighter pull – some improvement
Took the barrel off again and cut the leade opening to .236” instead of .217” – big improvement...
I think I had an alignment/indexing problem and probably still do... some of the bushings may have a concentricity issue but I’m willing to call this a promising start.
Both 451s – the .177 and .22 cal:
Had fun restoring these broken 50 yr old guns... guessing it was the challenge.
Oh btw, the Aluminum Black sort of worked…
I might try it again after I read the directions

Thanks, ped - I have no doubt your anodizing work would be first-rate like your other work.
Rob, the 600 is another example – they measure .313 to .315” (about the same as the 451 barrels).. ie. 090”+ larger than head size.
I think that long, loose leades may be a little more forgiving… don’t really know but it does show the importance of getting the pellet started-off right.
Need to try some different pellets too, thanks-

After testing several different pellets, I found the clear winner...
Round ball:
It makes perfect sense – no orientation issues in the chambers or the leade. And a big (huge) plus – easy to load. Groups are generally less than ¾” with a few dime-size so far. It might be shooting better than my ability to aim without magnification. Still get the occasional flyer but not too bad. thanks-

Just when things couldn’t get any better… they didn’t...
Shown above are the recovered front and rear parts of the “slide return spring”. This part is unobtanium and I don’t have a spare.
It got even better. The spring broke during the blowback (rearward slide action) so the blowback was completely unrestrained. The resulting impact on the “hammer stop” was very harsh – it snapped off part of the rear sight assembly (sintered steel)...
The fragment flew back and hit my Rx shooting glasses… in a direct line to my right eye.
But the good news – I still have my right eye, I have a spare for the rear sight assembly, and I can get a custom spring made to replace the slide return spring. It’s not going to be like buying a spring at Ace. The springs are about 10 buxs after the setup cost.
As far as the broken rear sight, I don’t know if there is a way to bond sintered steel but I don’t want to create another eye projectile. If it happens again, I’ll break off the other side.
The pistol
was
shooting great. I replaced some of the bushings that were problematic and switched to CPH (10.5 gr). What fun, there’s always a challenge. I guess that’s why it’s so addicting

glad you had Ryans on and no damage to your eye Gary
as a welder/fabricator previously I have had a few visits to the eye clinic to have bits of metal removed from mine (and yes I do wear eye protection but even safety face shields don't always stop it)
