I picked this Crosman 1400 up today. I don't know much about Crosmans, either vintage nor worth, so I may be in too deep. It looks good but does not hold air very long.

you’re getting quite a collection, Rod. That looks like a pretty nice specimen. Reasonably easy one to reseal, if you need to. Shoot it first and see if you like it. Definitely a different feel than the Sheridans.

Looks like a nice one Rod,
A good looking 1400 like yours has been on my radar for a while. I figure if it needs resealed I could actually afford another Vintage pumper...
Congrats!
Give Rick at Precision Pellet a call. He will have the parts you need and gladly answer any questions you have along the way.

It seems like most owners of the Crosman 1400 will give you a thumbs up ! Oiling , pumping, & shooting it some may bring those seals back to life & it may hold air. They are nice little rifles.
Owner's & parts manuals for downloading.

I like the 1400s mostly because of the bolt handle. They actually produce a bit more power than the 140. If there is a downside it would be the wood in many cases. Some are a very unpleasant blondish color and you would want to condition it before refinishing or it will tun out blotchy. Yours looks like it has nice color....
Congrats.

Thanks for the replies. I have oiled it and am letting it sit. Tell me about the alcohol treatment. What kind? Rubbing alcohol, grain alcohol, or fuel alcohol? How much do you use?

Very nice find! It has the cast trigger guard, too. That means that the trigger may be adjustable for both weight and take-up like the 160 does. My dad has one and I need to check up on it.
Here's the thread on the alcohol treatment -

Regular household rubbing alcohol...
I shoot a few CCs in and cycle it thru. Repeat until it stops dispensing chocolate milk. Then cycle some to dry out the alcohol and add just a couple drops of secret sauce or your choice of lubes. If SS, a little goes a long way. Some even let it stand muzzle up in the corner over night.

Those are hard-shooting guns. Used to load mine with multiple lead balls for hunting bullfrogs at night.
That's a good looking example. If the flush doesn't get it holding, I've rebuilt those quad (outlet) seals with o rings. The inside quad seal can be picked out and replaced.
Good luck!

I don't have a 1400 but got a 140 off ebay awhile back.
Wouldn't pump up.
Replaced the stock piston head with an o-ring piston
and made a new transfer port from delrin.
Gets 700 FPS, 15+ FPE with 10 pumps.
725 FPS is doable with some valve mods.

That's one good looking rifle! If he's not holding air, definitely try the alcohol flush! You'll be surprised the junk that comes out of there. A good flush chased with Secret Sauce may be just what the doctor ordered. If not, as has been said it is a fairly easy rebuild. I did mine with a Mac1 kit, and it replaced the piston cup seal with a synthetic head that seals with an oring (similar in design to Tack Driver 10's unit). So far it works great! Best of luck.

WHOOOPEEE!! Well, the oil treatment did not work so last night I gave her a couple of shots of alcohol, shot her dry and oiled her. Let her stand overnight and she held air. Shot her three times and gave her four pumps. Eleven hours later she still holds air.
I shot her a few times and she seems to shoot very strong. Now I think I need a chrony.
Thanks for all the help. The folks that frequent this forum are really pleasant and generous.

Nice score Rod. Everyone needs at least a 140/1400 in their collection. Push out more umph than the Dan & Benjis, also much quieter discharge, and some have groves cut in. Only downside is the triggers aren't as good as the Dan and Benji. Can't win em all. Thing I like a lot about these 140/1400 they can be had for cheaper and in rough condition. Which makes it easier to take out hunting, throw behind the seat or trunk, strap it on your quad, etc. Unfortunately, yours isn't in that condition. That's a good thing though.
