Last year I only got one black squirrel all year, I think this year is going to be different though
Yep I was using my cast pellets on this hunt too, there's no sense in buying pellets for my .22's anymore IMO, it's fun casting them besides the fact that it's much cheaper casting my own in the long run. Prod just loves them.

Nice, Wayne!
I've never came across black squirrels before. They just plain look so odd to me.... Like slender, stripeless skunks

I've never even seen a black squirrel when living in New Jersey or hunting squirrels in West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. I have taken the larger reddish colored fox squirrels when living in West Virginia but no "black squirrels" so I pulled up this info from Wikipedia out of curiosity.........
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_squirrel
"The black squirrel occurs as a melanistic subgroup of both the eastern gray squirrel and the fox squirrel.[1] Their habitat extends throughout the Midwestern United States, in some areas of the Northeastern United States, eastern Canada, and also in the United Kingdom. The overall population of black squirrels is small when compared to that of the gray squirrel. The black fur color can occur naturally as a mutation in populations of gray squirrels, but it is rare. The rarity of the black squirrel has caused many people to admire them, and the black squirrels enjoy great affection in some places as mascots."
"As a rare mutation of both the eastern gray and fox squirrel, individual black squirrels can exist wherever gray or fox squirrels live. Among eastern squirrels, gray mating pairs cannot produce black offspring. Gray squirrels have two copies of a normal pigment gene and black squirrels have either one or two copies of a mutant pigment gene. If a black squirrel has two copies of the mutant gene it will be jet black. If it has one copy of a mutant gene and one normal gene it will be brown-black.[2] In areas with high concentrations of black squirrels, litters of mixed-color individuals are common."
Rather fascinating and "I done lernt sumpin knew".

Good shooting and nice video, really enjoyed it. I have one section of woods I hunt in that has a good supply of black nutters and I've harvested a few over the years and I swear they are smarter and more wary than their "normal" relatives. Anyway, thanks for sharing your hunt. Keep whacken em.

Thanks for all the great replies everyone !!! Last year still not yet into squirrel season I shot a smaller brindle colored one that I mistook for a be red squirrel. I got another one of the jet black ones today, also seen another but couldn't get a shot at it. There's another guy that I know that hunts there and he shot one of the brindle one's today as a matter of fact. He goes by Buffalo Bill and has for years, he said he's never shot one before today. I doubt you'll see a blonde colored one out there because the predator's would have it in a heartbeat. It'll be a while before I post todays hunt though. I got a good sized red, good sized Black and a BIG foxsquirrel.
