Title: Indiana Shooters?
Post by: jmdavis984 on January 16, 2012, 04:19:05 PM
It looks like there isn't much activity in IN for airgun shooters.  I am a true newb to the sport, owning just a 1377 and a B2, but I would love to get together and sling lead with anyone who would have me.  Is there any interest in a meet-up?  I realize meeting in the winter is a bit of a drag, but maybe we could start planning for something in the spring?  Unless one of you has a indoor heated range?

I'm a few miles west of Fort Wayne and as of next Monday my garage will be heated.  Where are you located?

I guess I should have mentioned my location huh.  I am in Noblesville, just outside of Indy.  My parents live outside of Marion, IN, and have acreage.  They may be open to us having some fun in the woods.

Hey Gents ... One more county to hear from ... I am in Monroe County, in beautiful downtown Bloomington!  In spite of the fact that Lake Monroe and the Hoosier National Forest are just "right here", there is not a range in sight.  I don't have a clue as to where to go.

Maybe some of the 40 others people who read this post will contact me ... I am hoping someone closer then Fort Wayne ... no offense there Whitley.

Guys, I think it is time to stir up something ... make a little noise ... and see if we can get this state shooting.

There are LOTS of PB guys in IN.  Just spend some time on IndianaGunOwners.com.  They have LOTS of traffic, with lots of posts about all the good firing ranges and gun stores in the state.  Unfortunately it seems like airgunning isn't as popular around here as in some other states.  Maybe it is because you can't legally hunt anything with them?

As far as shooting ranges near Bloomington, I would hit up the INGO website (IndianaGunOwners.com).  They aren't complete snobs to airgun owners.  And they definitely know where the shooting ranges are.

INGO is a great forum and I just noticed that as of today I have been a member for three years.  Not a lot of talk concerning AGs, but there are a few folks on the forum that shoot them.  It is a good place to read up on current events, gun laws and equipment.

Lafayette here. I hunt squirrels exclusively with airguns and shoot almost every day on my little piece of God's green earth.

There are 2 scout camps with ranges in this part of the state - Cary and Buffalo. They are available for rent, we should put a shoot together...

I say we just call a weekend and see who can make it.  If I had property I would have an open invitation to whoever wanted to come shoot.  I would also have a permanent range set up, instead of the 30-min of prep before shooting at my parent's place.  But, you do what you can, right?

Wow, I just now realized that Jim Chapman is within walking distance of my workplace!  I may actually get a chance to meet a real airgunner!  Sorry for gushing Jim, but I had no idea you were based in central IN.  Do you have land to shoot on?

Yea Gary your close!!   I usually work weekends and normal days off are Tues-Wed.  I think and actual Range like Atterbury is a little much for AGs.  I shoot my PBs there just because its safe.  Now I'm saying that shooting AGs can't be dangerous,I just can't see paying $6 an hour to shoot AGs.
Well maybe the Big Dog Guns that Jim Chapman has.
If we could find a field with a embankment..  I have several Target stands     Jeff

Ya Attetrbury is expensive. I take my Pb there as well. Although I want to stretch my Lonestar out to 100 yards there soon! I do have a place that is safe for AR out to 50 plus.

Lets all plan something! Seems everyone so far is hinting about getting together or afraid to.

Lets start something Hoosiers! *(&^ I am a newbie and would love to get together and learn.

By the way Anthoney Storey is in Indy now and has worked on my BSA

Sorry I didn't answer earlier, been traveling a lot. I've lived in Carmel for a few years now, and agree finding a place to shoot can be tough. I know a guy that owns an industrial property 20 minutes out of town that let's me set up my portable bench and shoot weekends and after their working hours, but for liability and security reasons access is restricted. Also have a couple friends with farms further out that I go to for hunting and more involved shooting sessions. I get just about 15 yards in my basement range, where I do a lot of initial sighting in, and practice offhand for a little while every day. Always wished their was an Airgun specific range in the area.

An airgun specific range would ROCK.  I don't think there is enough demand to make it very viable, unless you charged a membership fee or something like that.  Hmmm...

Howdy, Gents ...

I made a little detour through the ER at the hospital and came home with a Pacemaker I didn't know I needed.  The Doc says shooting is a good sport for me because I can do it laying down.

Anyway, I have some more information also.  This will be of interest mainly to people due south and a little on each side of I65.  I found a club that has its own outdoor summer range and indoor winter range.  The bulk of its members live in the triangle of Columbus, Seymour and Bloomington.  Others are as far away as Louisville and Indy.  These guys are big bore firearm guys, at least outdoors they are.  Many of them also compete in very high tech airgun target pistol events.  There is a fee to join.  If anyone wants to follow up, go to www.hhrp.org (http://www.hhrp.org) and have a look.

Regarding ranges near Bloomington, there are a couple.  By near I mean anything less than 20 miles.  But, one of those two has a limited membership and they are full up for the foreseeable future.  The other one specializes in trap and skeet.  Anything more is at least 30 miles away.  The one I mentioned earlier is actually about 10 or 15 miles from Columbus.

If I find any more info that is significant and reliable, I will let you know.

John

Yep, used to shoot highpower nra matches with those guys.  Suggestion for ranges around the state is State Recreation areas, SRA's.  Some have ranges. You can find them in the hunting and fishing guides available at many places, Walmart, sporting goods stores, bait stores, Indiana DNR website, etc.

Welcome to GTA!  Are you in Carmel City Limits?  If so, be sure to check your local regulations before doing any more shooting.  I know it is illegal here in Noblesville.  If it is legal, more power to you!

That said, the only airgun club that I know of around here is Fall Creek Valley Conservation Club near Anderson (fcvcc.org).

Anyone out on the Central East side of the state, say around Richmond? I've got a new Nitro Venom that needs a little breakin' in. There's a nice DNR range about 14 miles from where I live, generally go there with my firearms. Thinking about just shooting in the garage for now until all this cold turns to Spring. But if you guys can figure out what your going to do, I wouldn't mind doing a little driving to sling some lead. 8)

I assume you're talking about Wilbur Wright shooting range?  I'm sure we would be laughed at for having "toy guns" but when the weather warms up a bit I might be up for some paper punching.  I went there once to shoot my .22LR's and it was nice and empty.  I hear the weekends can get a little full.

I was talking about Brookville Lake DNR just below Liberty. But I think my truck will hold enough gas to make it to Wilbur Wright Range lol. Oh yeah it would have to warm up a little. Really don't care about the laughing I'll just take my 45,9,380,22lr,judge and circuit judge I think that should stop the laughing ;D

I'm sniffing around looking for folks near the I-275 loop. I think I recruited one Hoosier to the GTA board already. :)

My thinking is that in our area, neither Ky nor Indiana has enough shooters to reliable make for a single state local shoot, BUT, that if you combine the Tri-state we might. I've found one nice fellow on the east side who has space too shoot but I'm still looking for a central location. I'm also looking for a centralized INDOOR location.

Of course, If I can't find more than a couple people, it's hardly worth too much finagling. So, I'm putting out feelers. Anybody interested in doing some manner of tri-state shoot?

OK, I may have found a very good potential location. I'm going out on Friday to get the lay of the land and see what he's up for. This could be a regular thing, as well. I'll advise!

So far, it looks like he's about 15 minutes from Cincinnati, just off I-275, he has air and CO2, refreshments and space.

I'm very hopeful!

I'll provide a full report shortly.

Saw where you were hitting the bull and tearing paper, looking good. Seems like your getting close to figuring something out on a tri-state shoot. I'm game if you get something hammered out. It will probably be on 24 or 25 of Mar., it being my luck. I'll be back home in TN visiting some redneck friends. Also just about got my QB ready to be throwing some lead down range on HPA.

This site will totally work and the owner is totally game. He has air, CO2, food, and a cooler to keep beer in if that's something that isn't a bad idea.

Our problem, we need somebody who has done shoots before to give some guidance and/or help organize.

How about a agenda of events something we can model after.

I'm good with:
1. Shoot stuff
2. Eat stuff
3. Shoot stuff again

My main goal would be to shoot some guns that I can't afford.  It's all the little details, like what to shoot at (targets, target stands, plinking stuff), who will bring food, etc, that need "coordination."  I would be good with "bring your own targets to share, bring some food to share."

Hey Gary! I'm in the Beech Groove area. I might actually hit up the Beech Groove Firearms range tonight after work. I emailed the owner and he said that they're fine with Airguns, but it's the same cost as normal guns to rent a lane which seems fine. It's a bit expensive but I'm really anxious to shoot a bit since getting my new rifle in on Monday!

As for the get together, I've got an electric grill I could bring if we think there will be power of some sort :) Always willing to bring some beverages and brats too!

Edit: I forgot you asked what I was shooting! I picked up a Crosman TR77 off of Woot.com last week. I haven't had a chance to fire any shots yet, but I REALLY like the look! I'm told the scope and trigger on it could do with a replacement, but honestly this is the first airgun I've owned so I have nothing to compare them to. I'm mostly planing on target shooting and plinking with it, not much need to shoot any critters so close to downtown haha

Edit 2!: I also have no idea at all where to buy pellets for this thing... I've got no ammo! Any suggestions on where to buy, and what kind?

Welcome to GTA. If there is a Wallmart near you, most of them have Crosman pellets and a couple other brands. Dicks Sporting Goods and Dunhams both have them too. Every gun seems to have it's favorite pellet(s), you just have to find them by shooting.

Hey Todd of Richmond ... I am in Bloomington.  There is absolutely no good way to get from where you are to where I am.  You have to go somewhere else first, then you can get to me.  So, go to Indianapolis, and then come to Bloomington.  Google says you are 2 hours and 15 minutes from me.  Anyone traveling in a straight line can do it in half that time, or less.  But, you are in Indiana now, Toto.  Excuse me, Todd.

But, who knows?  One of these days maybe Indy would be a good place to aim for.  Is there anyone on here from Indianapolis?

edwin here from marion - grant county, new to AG, and i am certainly interested in joining you guys in a fun shoot/squirrel hunting/etc.  hope we could get organized after this deep freeze we're having.

Edwin, my parents have some acreage in Grant Co.  That's where I normally go to shoot.  I'll let you know the next time I am up there for a "range day."

Sounds brilliant!  Shoot eat shoot
I don't even care what order.
I have been wanting to have a get together at my place to get to know some more air gunners around.  I have the land and would love to see it put to good use. I live between Columbus and seymour.  Any one interested?

I might be up for a shoot sometime this fall.  I think I've only gotten out once or twice this summer, so I could use a good lead chucking session.

If I can coordinate it with a wine trail trip for the wife, I may be able to make something work.

New member.  Just started getting interested in airguns again.  Fiddled around years ago with BB and pellet guns (70's) as a kid.

Interested in target shooting and small game hunting.  Getting a fresh start, no equipment yet.  Looking at equipment, trying to learn, learn where to shoot, etc.  Taking hunter ed course in October.

Live in Indianapolis West side, small lot, can't shoot at home in the subdivision.

crosley, Vernon Indiana, is a free range and has been updated but never airgun shot there.  you do have to compete with the powder burners though...

Yeah, we can probably do that this summer Geoff. Been a heck of a year for us here. We went thru heck with Vicki's mother and her ALS and we lost her the end of October and we just buried her father this week. We have all the estate stuff to settle and auction off and  I think thats going to be in May. Maybe shortly thereafter if all goes well there. Seems like the only place I see my friends these days is at the hospital or the funeral home. Getting older stinks!!!

This was posted back in 2012 and you say it's been updated so maybe things have changed but it looks great as is.
