Title: AirMax Extreme MKII compressor issue.
Post by: avator on January 01, 2019, 05:08:10 PM
I got an MKII from MRodAir some time back and it did an awesome job filling my 3300 psi scuba tanks for quite some time.
A couple months ago I bought a 4500 psi scba tank for the lighter weight. I had to use a coupler to connect the compressor hose to the tank hose.
Just as the pressure hit 4500 and was about to auto shutoff, that coupler let go. I had to scramble to catch hoses and shut things down. Betty Lou was freaking, Rambo was freaking and I'm trying to catch high speed rattle snakes by the neck. It was quite the scene.
Any how, got everyone settled down and reconfigured my hose set up to eliminate the coupler. Only problem is, now the compressor won't build past 2k.
I can run it for 20 minutes with a dead head in the hose and the temps don't rise beyond 35c. I shut it down and I can't hear anything leaking and it holds the 2k pressure until I bleed it off.
I can't seem to locate the spare seals that came with the compressor and I'm not sure I would know hoe to replace them if I did.
I reached out to Mike with an e-mail but I'm not too hopeful I'll get a response.
Any help would be appreciated.

PS. I picked up a Vevor basic Chinese compressor on the cheap and it does an impressive job filling my guns directly. I just hate looking at that MKII and tanks sitting there and not having them as an option.

Yep, I do..
As I stated.... before all the hooplah begins.... it failed due to MY mistake.
I drained and replaced the oil today and guess what.... I also had way too much oil in it.... my bad again.
I've been very happy with this compressor and I NEED it running again.

.... and someone with experience to guide me. That "blowoff" and the oil over filled made me a little sick in my stomach. I want to be sure it's done correctly.

Bill, spray some soapy water with it pumping and the dead head in. Even the smallest leaks have a huge impact at high pressure. I believe your compressor is probably fine but when you redid your lines something may have a leak.

Thanks Jason..
I'll give that a shot tomorrow. I do know about the soapy water thing. I just guess I have myself convinced it's a seal.

It is possible that a seal went out due to the decompression. Could you post a picture of your setup?

Sure, and here is a link to my thread when I first got it. 9 pages so plenty of reading if you so desire.

Thanks Bill! We have the same type just different branding. I think I have a spare seal kit somewhere if you need one.

Can you elaborate on the coupler that left go? Type and or pressure rating. Describe what broke.

Bill have you sent SPA an email to try getting an exploded view of the compressor, I'm pretty sure they built it(that's bad you can't get hold of mrodair), I know that airgunstocks had one of those compressors bite it quite some time ago but I doubt very much he's still got it, you might try sending him a message.    If it is made by SPA that's good news because they'll send you parts if you need them after you can figure out what the part numbers are ???

Yeah Barry, it was just a double male quick connector that connects two females together. It just popped out of the female connector once the pressure reached 4500. The male coupler was purchased online and was rated for 6k and the female connector came with the compressor. I chose to use it instead of changing one of the females to a male. I have two types of tanks, SCUBA and SCBA. Each was opposite from the other in the way they connected to the compressor hose, hence the need for the coupler on one of them. That has since or will all be reconfigured before I use them again.

Thanks Wayne..
Firekill has a reseal kit he is sending me. Pretty sure it's what I need. If not, I'll contact Julie. I'll also reach out to her for an exploded view.

I have and use the brass female couplers but I don't trust them. I've had fitment issues with them on several things. Also check that there is still an o ring inside the coupler. When it popped it may have blown it out.

O rings all in place.
Thanks.

Pretty sure it's the high side valve that got damaged during rapid decompression.
Or piston ring. They are designed to work against pressure.

Thanks Marko.... Still waiting for Julie to respond. In the meantime, I've been using the compact Vevor to fill guns directly. It's doing a great job. I swapped out the Celsius gauge for a Fahrenheit gauge.

Bill I've only ordered once directly from SPA and my parts were here in less than a week but the shipping cost more than the parts.

Killfire sent me a nice care package of replacement parts. I'm just waiting for Julie to respond to my email. All I need her to send me is the exploded view.

Maybe try pyramyd or air venturi as their compressor looks similar as well.

Guykuos tear down shows the compressor layout pretty good if I remember correctly.
I can't remember if it was here too but over at TAG its easy to find.
