I just finished rebuilding a 22SG. This was the first one I've seen. I have a 22X/822 which I covered in my project 822 topic, but this is the first 22SG. I am super impressed by the factory scope. It is extremely clear and bright. It is the best "combo" scope I have ever seen. I refinished the wood and almost tossed the valve body for a new valve body I would have drilled for 22. The retaining tabs for the poppet were "warped" out so it did not hold the poppet well. I blew the poppet out after a few shots. I installed the PBL power mod and tapped the tabs in with a brass tap. I installed all new seals and bridged the receiver. I refinished a metal pump arm and installed it. I started encountering valve lock at 10 pumps. I new that wasn't right so the diagnostic process began. Turned out the hammer was also bent. It was rubbing the valve body. I installed a 3mm washer on the hammer pin and installed a new hammer. No more valve lock, and full dumps at 20 pumps. Its ready to meet some busy tails in Dads garden. Its building 18FPE with 18 grain pellets. Turned out pretty nice. I'm going to give it to my Dad for his birthday next month. He's been wanting a 22 pellet rifle so this one should do nicely.

You can lead a man to water, but you can't keep him from urinating in it.

Yeah that was a new one on me. The casting marks were much more pronounced/rougher than normal also. So the 22SG was a redo of the 22x which was a redo of the 822 as I understand it and perhaps one of the last U.S. make guns. Maybe the molds/tooling was sloppy by then. Any who I got it sorted and it's functioning well. The warped hammer/sear was odd as well as the loose poppet retaining slots. I was very close to drilling an 880 valve body and replacing it. Had I not wanted to keep it as original as possible minus the pump arm I would have.

So the 822 was made from 1976 - 1978, the 22X was made from 2002 - 2003, the 22SG was offered 2002-2007 and 2010 - 2012. This one was made July 2007 so it was at the end of the run. I suspected it was based on the VB and hammer being jacked. I was able to fix the VB and replaced the hammer. Dealing with this one makes me think putting 3mm washers on either side of the hammer is a good idea for any VB to help the hammer swivel and keep it centered on the poppet. I wish Daisy would make a hybrid of these and the 1977 with wood and metal.
