Title: Nightvison/night hunting
Post by: Jplee3 on August 29, 2022, 06:58:40 PM
Hi all,

For those of you who are into night hunting, what night vision scopes or add-ons do you have? I'm looking for something budget-friendly. It seems the attachment type add-ons would fit the bill. Just wondering if anyone has specific suggestions

What is budget friendly? What range are you looking for? If you zoom in typically you loose resolution. I consider my SIGHTMARK 4k mini at $800 budget friendly and on the low end of a quality NV scope. But at 2x zoom it's the clearest it's going to be. Although I don't find the zoom bad at all compared too my 254 agm thermals zoom.. I'm no expert on night vision scopes and not going super spec here neither  .
Also consider what you are mounting on. Dovetail or picitinny?

That does look interesting - unfortunately, Amazon won't ship nightvision scopes to my area (it could be all of California in fact) :(

Yea, my budget is pretty low for this haha - I'm thinking no more than a couple hundred bucks. Seems like it's going to be hard finding anything though. I don't need anything super fancy. Really this is just for scaring off skunks, possums, possibly coyotes (though I may need something bigger for that haha), etc...

Nice... Didnt think about that. What tends to be better suited for night hunting between green and red?

It can depend on conditions and ones perceived results, get one with both, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087RJF89Y/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4? (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087RJF89Y/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?)

Thanks. I have so many plain ole flashlights it's not funny. I wish there were a cap with colored flip/slide lenses or something that I could get in front. Maybe I'll look for that and a simple scope mount and have at it.

You could use red or green cellophane , and a rubber band and have in  your pocket when you need it. ( Jus' my red neck saving mode kicking in. Or non urban person. So I don't offend any one )!!

James, Jeremy,
It looks interesting for 200 bucks. I think I'll give it a try.
What have you heard about this one?

From the few reviews, it probably works better than my old ATN, and more versatile than a scope all in one.

James,
I will let you know my opinion.  Keep in mind that I never had any night vision stuff.

Okay, I haven't had much time to evaluate.

PROs:
● It does work.

● It just clamps to the scope ocular so you
-    need not zero anything.

● It weighs only one pound.

● Batteries included!
2 18650 batteries for the IR 850 NM.
-    flashlight (torch). It only takes one cell,
-    so there is a spare.
-    2 each 18350 cells for the video recorder.
-    The Camcorder only takes 1, also a spare!
-    It has a built-in projected red dot that is
-    visible to the human eye. This is on/off by
-    long button push.

● It has a cross-hair that can be turned on or
-    off in the menu.

● It did fit the 44 mm ocular on my
-    Athlon Argos 8-32 scope. (I've not found
-    an eye cup that fits this scope.)

● It can connect to smart phone to display
-    in real time.

CONs:

● The infra-red torch (flashlight) isn't very
-    strong.
-    It shines maybe 35 or 40 yards at best.

● I dosen't seem to have auto focus,
-    it's manual focus. This isn't a problem
-    when connected to a scope because I
-    use the scope focus. I did record inside
-    the house in daylight but the manual
-    focus isn't much fun.

● The little 240x240 screen in the ocular is
-    very bright. I will find a neutral density
-    (gray) filter to dim it down.

Pretty much the same issues as an ATN, poor illuminator, and blinding bright screen, that can be adjusted with control options in the camera viewer settings.

I escaped the light pollution of the city to try it in the dark of the country forrest. It was well dark and the moon was still below the treetops. It can really record deer and opossums to at least 80 or 90 yards. There is a learning curve. I still have a lot to learn.
I was sleepy trying to connect the Bluetooth to my phone,  I fell asleep without success.  When I awoke I discovered that it connects using wifi. DOH!
It works, but it uses wifi, not Bluetooth.
