Title: 160 O/H instructions?
Post by: Hoosier Daddy on July 30, 2017, 08:59:27 AM
Since making the deal on my new-2-me Cosman 160 I have been on a search for rebuild instructions. Actually surprised I could not find a video on YouTube.
I have found it was done on "another airgun blog"in two parts.

He does a good job of detailing with photos . I would like to find another source to compare.
Anyone know of another place to go for instruction?

Here are two QB78 pages - Hope they are useful.    Anotherairgunblog is a very useful website for sure.

Took a while to relocate this:

http://stevespages.com/pdf/crosman_factory_service_manual_all.pdf (http://stevespages.com/pdf/crosman_factory_service_manual_all.pdf)

There is a Crosman 160/167 section.

The Crosman website has an EVP, but of course no parts are available from them.

Thanks Craig!
I have the Crosman Service Manual PDF downloaded from trying to score a 140/1400. It helped me determine I have a 3rd variant 160. My first ever gun was a 160 but the safety on this one is like my AR2078....  I now know that is another Variant 3 clue.
So a QB78 is that much of a clone?

Yes, the QB78 is a Chinese clone of the Crosman 160.   Quite popular but I am quite sure having the real thing is much to be preferred.   I do not have a 160 (  :( ) but by all reports they copied the 160 very well.   External things like the sights are quite different and the stock is a bit chunky.

Here is a useful page regarding parts interchangeability:

QB78 is a close looking clone of the 160....inside and out..... but I've had issues with the sights (shooting too high) and the triggers (way long and unpredictable) that come stock on the chinese version.

Life is good.
Got her field stripped and called Rick at Precision Pellet to get a reseal kit coming.
I an going to wait until the parts arrive before completely tearing it down.

Looks like a military model 160??

It has all the features of one doesn't it!
Sling Swivels and the 331 peep... and would explain being in such good shape, coming available unused out of an arsenal in the '90's.
But from my research, because the USAF did not stamp them as such, without the tell-tale "Red Tag" it will never be known for sure.

Quote from: Military airgun trainers: Part 2 by Tom Gaylord
This was originally published in "Shotgun News" in 2006.

Military airgun trainers: Part 2

The U.S. Air Force purchased several hundred .22-caliber Crosman 160 CO2 rifles for marksmanship training in the 1960s. Many were never used and were later sold in the 1990s as surplus. The rifle is not martially marked, though some may have the impromptu marking of local commands.
The USA -- Crosman 160
Let's begin with a relatively recent military trainer -- and a trainer with a real difference. In the 1960s, the U.S. Air Force bought several hundred Crosman 160 CO2 target rifles for marksmanship training. This is a departure for military trainers, because they usually looked more military, and accuracy is secondary. With the Crosman 160, it was the reverse.
The rifle was totally civilian, and it was nearly as accurate as any .22 target rifle of the period -- certainly good enough for target shooting at 50 feet. All the Air Force did to make it their own was specify a Crosman (Williams) S331 aperture rear sight and a one-inch leather sling with swivels. Both items could be purchased by the general public, but relatively few rifles ever had both unless they were trainers. Clearly, the Air Force wanted a three-position target rifle -- not a realistic battle weapon.
This model is very much a military trainer because it was actually inventoried in the Federal Stock System and had a Federal Stock Number. It did not have any Air Force markings on the actual rifle, however.
This label is all that positively identifies an Air Force Crosman. Without it, you have a good story and nothing else.

I received the reseal parts from Precision Pellet in the mail Yesterday but I also received the Power Adjuster for the 1740.
So I went with the instant gratification and put the PA on and shot 175 pellets through it instead.
Now I can focus on this 160.  8)

Very nice looking 160 indeed. Good luck with the reseal, it's pretty straight forward.
let's see some targets and chrony #'s when you get her going.

Took the early morning "quiet time" to finish complete disassembly. Cleaned all the parts with rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush, amazing how clean everything was... just old dried oil is all. This gun from Avator is in AMAZING shape for its age!
Gave all the bits a super fine coat of pelgun oil and got her put back together with all new seals, valve stem, and barrel band "Strap Screw".
Why Crosman ever got away from this trigger is beyond me. Talk about simple in design and sweet to pull AND ADJUSTABLE !
Then the test, one new cart in nose first and an old one nose out to the front. A first shot to open the CO2 and the next one BAM!
 Outside we go!!!
5 carts later i came in to post here... she is dialed in and smackin 'em down.

I need to find a vintage looking brown leather sling.  ;)

Here are the numbers I got last evening.
Bare in mind, I am using "Chrono Connect" on my android phone. Careful measurements as per its direction and used the canned BC for a CPHP 14.3 Hollow point of 0.013. Both strings are with two carts that had a couple shots already fired to take it off the initial peak velocity.

First sting was 78 degrees in the sun, so the black tube was warm to the touch.
668
663
662
658
649
648
640
632
626
621

Pretty consistent decline as things cooled down and the CO2 was depleting.
Then the last string was as the sun was setting behind the trees so I was shooting in the shade with the temp dropping down to 69 degrees.

641
626
621
622
619
614
617
604
610
602

Still a nice predictable decline and I don't it's too shabby for the cooler temps we are seeing. Not sure how accurate the numbers really are since it is a phone app and not a real chrono.  but it seems constant if careful measurements are taken.

That ain't bad out of a .22 C02 gun. The accuracy of that gun is where it's really going to shine. And the peep is always a plus. The sling lugs put the gun right out there with you.
A true backyard defender with the nostalgic feel.

600 ++ fps out of a .22 rifle on co2 is hot. That's what you expect out of a nice shooting 160. And yes, she is a gas hog. But what fun!!

Glad to see you got it going.
That one is in really nice shape!
Congrats!

I can now say it is not a "Gas Hog".... It's a "POWER HOUSE"!
The JSB 18.13 Heavies are a tight nickel sized group at 30 yards... and the 25.4g JSB MONSTERS are smacking the 30 yard Target HARD with a group that is about 3/4" .
What a MACHINE!
I need to chrony it to see exactly what FPE this this is dishin out.

Just spotted this thread. Sorry I'm late to the party! I have a 160 Pellgun variant one. The first of it's kind, 1955-56 model I restomodded myself. Yours is indeed a variant 3 from the barrel band, trigger assembly & stock. It does indeed look like an Airforce trainer. I bought the later valve assembly Crosman made from A. That and seal upgrades, a few bits from the Assembly Kit from A, and I've gotten a best of 660FPS and 11.71FPE thus far. Shot these three targets @ 10yds with RWS superpoint extras @ 14.5gr. Tuned the Centerpoint 4x32 scope on Ron Robinson mounts for targets #2 & 3. Should be a great close-range small game rifle?

Find any decent slings yet? I saw this on eBay:

Looks to just need some oil to freshen her up. It's got the clips you would need already.

It's a Hammer!
Shot count is 2/3rds but the accuracy and energy it produces excels . It's sitting to my left right now next to me at the computer.

Rob, This is in the amazon cart as we speak... The 160 already has swivels and rings.

Nice leather sling. I got this olive drab one from Gander Mtn before they closed their doors up the street. I thought the olive drab, which was popular in the 50's, would fit well on a mid-50's rifle. The store logo is cool too, I think?
