Hi check out the shoebox 3000 vs 4500 thread right under this one. We will hopefully have a review shortly. Looks very interesting . For me speed is not so much an issue but if the Altaros is a bit faster, easier to maintain then a shoebox compressor and doesn't require a oiless compressor for the first stage I'm in.

A long time AG buddy onver on the TAG has one waiting in his Post he should be picking up this week when he returns from a trip.
I am looking forward to his review of it. It so far, looks very promising from what research I have been able to do on it.
Could be a relatively inexpensive alternative to what is available out there. ;)

You don't need an 'oil-less' compressor for the Shoebox, either. I just use my normal shop compressor with a belt driven pump with oil in it's crankcase. Never a problem. Never heard of a problem. Plus, they aren't nearly as annoyingly NOISY as the oiless units.

For the price of an oil-free compressor it really doesn't make any sense to risk killing yourself with an exploding tank. We really recommend you stay away from oil compressors and live a long and happy life.

If the engineer tells you it has a chance to ignite and explode from atomized oil mist in the air why take a chance?

The infinitesimal amount of oil that would get compressed in a compressor... should any get through... is not enough to make anything 'explode'. The Altaros folks don't 'WARN' against using a conventional air compressor as the first stage. Plus, to make anything 'diesel' and explode, it needs to be compressed QUICKLY. I've never heard of a Shoebox style pump, or even a PCP air gun dieseling. The ONLY things airgun related I've ever heard of dieseling, were SPRING guns. I've had spring guns diesel. Guess what, the gun didn't blow up. It was just a little louder than usual. NO BIG DEAL. It didn't even mess up the gun. Some people have done it on purpose multiple times with their spring guns, just because they thought it was cool sounding.
A conventional compressor produces LESS moisture than the airless designs, aren't nearly as annoying sounding when they run, and are totally FINE to use as a first stage. You are FAR more likely to get combustibles in the air from the lube on the Shoebox, itself... than from the first stage air supply.
It's just the facts.

Until you have researched it, it is VERY irresponsible to advise others to do it.
It's fine for you to risk it yourself. Your decision. But not cool at all to thru ignorance, putting other people who do not know any better at risk. Not cool at all!

It takes HEAT to ignite such a mixture, and pressure isn't what causes heat, but sudden compression.
Infinitesimal amounts of oil are not going to create an 'explosion'... even if there was an ignition source.
Show me ONE example in the air gun world where someone's Shoebox, tank or gun blew up.
The only thing I've ever seen diesel is a spring gun. Done it myself. Never even blew out an o-ring.

Google is your friend! Also, there have been pic's a few years ago over on the TAG. Not a shoe box, but a compressor nonetheless.
This topic has been discussed a lot, and often on different forums for "Years" now. Explosions have happened, and everyone is very careful. It is never a bad thing to be vigilant when working with this kind of pressure.
These things, in the wrong circumstances, can be a BOMB!

CRC seems pretty well known, used and trusted for most industry. Although, I spy petrol. This is the aerosol version.
