Title: Benji 347 one pump and that is all
Post by: singleshotcajun on April 02, 2013, 07:14:57 PM
After thirty faithful years I finally have a problem with my 347. As of today it will only take one pump. After one pump I do not hear it taking air on successive pumps. The cocking and firing mechanism is working and it will fire a pellet with only one pump but only the first pump increases pressure. Please help me fix my favorite old pellet rifle.

I'd try to change the piston pump cup first and see if that takes care of it. If not you may be in for a reseal.

Thanks. The cup seems fine. After one pump the pumping lever almost resets itself from pressure in the air chamber . I may just get a kit and rebuild it. I have never rebuilt a pumper. Anyone know of a source for a kit with instructions?

Best person to talk with is Tim at Mac1 airguns.
He rebuilds and reconditions those rifles, he will most likely have everything you need.
He would be the best bet, if looking to have someone, do it for you too.
He is also a vendor and member hear, you can find him, in the vendors gate.

the check valve may be gummed up and getting stuck, therefor limiting how much air is able to pass by..  i'd clean it out real good. There are reseal kits available that come with the tool needed to open the back of the valve or you could just call mac1

Any of the Post 85 347 or 342's will be [prone to Check valve failure as the Sheridan check is employed in those models and doesn'tr have the integrity of the earlier Benjy Check they used. The Sheridans are notorius for doi ng nthe same one pump only scenario. It almost always follows someone injecting copous amounts of lubricant or solvent into the AIR intake Hole.
Pretty bad idea on any Pump. It is the AG equivalent of the Doctor say clear and hitting the paddle button. No cure for a failed Check. Done blowd.

Guilty as charged on the lube. Used to give it a few drops of silicone oil every once in a great while and wish I had stuck to that plan. Recently over applied and then this happened. Can't complain after thirty + years of service.
Is there any time of year that is better to send it to you for a reseal as in a slower time of year ? I'm not in a great hurry for it.

If I could see the future I would not be in this business but right now is about as slow a time in the airgun business as I have ever seen. That does not mean I'm not busy but it does mean the line to get guns done is not around the block. Turnaround runs 3-4 weeks on Current stuff (under 20 years old and 6-10 weeks on early stuff that needs to be tanked and cleaned out. That would include all 340 series guns and Rocker Safety Dans.
I have no control over the economy but as long as the times are tough more older guns get fixed than new buys. That means in the worst of times I get super busy. We are seeing an upturn in new gun sales and a bit of relief on the old stuff. As long as housing prices keep going up I'm not all that busy with repairs as people are feeling like throwing old stuff away and buying new disposables.
That's when things get slow here and everywhere where things get restored and repaired.

Tim thanks so much for your help. Thanks for responding to my post and my email. A friend of mine suggested using George Pena for the rebuild. George is just down the road in Georgetown, TX. Anytime time someone who is local or near local comes recommended by a friend I have to try them. Thanks to all for your help.
