Interesting read.... learned a bit from the posts. It has to be fun to restore a nice find.

It sure was a pleasure to create a treasure! I hope I've committed enough to film and the written word to help someone else do the same? I've got enough to keep me busy for awhile with 4 rifles and 3 stocks to work on! So there's a lot more coming! Check out my new profile pic, it's a seldom-seen side of the 160 Pellgun variant 1.
I changed the pic in question, so here it is;

I also found out recently that the "A" gas valve called an "XP" tuned one for the QB78 fits my 160 Pellgun. It's supposed to be good for another 70FPS by itself. Another 130 with the XP tune kit that doesn't retrofit the 160. I also wish I could use their left-hand bolt receiver kit with Weaver rail machined in. But oh well. The gas valve will/should kick her up to some 730FPS?

And, after looking through the 160 Pellgun's chronograph folder, and finding a few pellets I hadn't tested, I decided to do so, while I wait to get paid again to order the QB78 gas valve assembly that'll give another 70FPS. I noticed I hadn't tested the CPHP's @ 14.3gr, nor the H&N FTT's @ 14.66gr. And I definitely
was so sure
the H&N hornet @ 16.2gr was going to be way too heavy!? Well, First off, I'm now thinking I haven't cleaned the barrel since last time, since some numbers are a bit lower than I figured. Still decent, considering temp as well. I also searched for and found how far above sea level I am, and input that number. It was zero thus far. So maybe that had a negative effect, rather than a positive one? Here's the readouts, with temp and humidity;
CPHP, 14.3gr;
H&N FTT, 14.66gr;
H&N hornet, 16.2gr...these were a surprise!;
Now, imagine what these numbers could look like wth the QB78 XP tuned gas valve it's getting soon?...

Leonard, my 160 was getting 40 shots in the 650 - 680 fps range with 14.3g CP's when I first got it, stock valve and fresh seals.
I put in a modded valve form Mike at Flying Dragon, which appears very similar to "A"'s valve.
When I first put it in, I substituted the stiff spring in the modded valve for the softer one from my stock valve.
It did about 730 fps but only got about 15 - 20 shots with velocity dropping every shot.
I didn't care for the loss in shot count and dropping velocity, So, I put the stock valve back in and left it for a while.
Then, one day, it dawned on me, I should try the modded valve with the stiff spring it came with. I know, DUH right?
So I swapped it out, again, and wow......it now gets 720 - 730 fps for the first 30 shots and another 10 shots dropping to 650 fps for a total of 40 good shots, same as the stock valve.
So, yes, it was about a 60 - 70 fps gain, and same number of shots on the two 12g cars.
I like it very much, leaving the modded valve in.

I'm definitely going to refer back to your observations. Good stuff, as I noticed the changes in springs, for example, in the upgrade seal/assembly parts kits I bought from "A" and Baker south of me. I went from like 50 shots down to 25 on the nose with the " replacement" valve. Just a newly machined version of Crosman's redesign from 1963. But I'm down like 100FPS. Need to clean the barrel and polish the valve innards again, maybe? Cause the 660FPS came from the platinum PBA @ 9.7gr. But the 11.71 came from the RWS superpoint extra @ 14.5gr? Something's wrong here? Could just be the temp? I have my heater set for 69F, but the APP read 61F. The rifle's metal parts were definitely cold. So That could most likely account for the loss of velocity?
That said,
any chance
to shoot such a wonderful antique rifle is always welcome! I can't wait now to get the two 760's restomodded! Those will be great to try after so much work too! It'll be a good chance to put the Simmons 4x32 scopes to the acid test they deserve. Walmart blister pack scopes aren't always jounk.
By the by, I also took out the hammer spring washer they gave in the assembly kit...or maybe one of the seal kits? I forget now? I thought it performed better without it on the back of the hammer spring? Now I'm wondering again?

Well, My suspicions proved correct. The bore on the 160 was filthy! So the numbers are likely down from actual. I'll have to re-shoot them just to see if they go up after cleaning, which is the usual. At the least, I'll use this rifle in the shooting challenge.

My new "A" XP-tuned gas valve assembly arrived today. It's allegedly worth an additional 70FPS wit their seals, which I already used. As can be seen in the photo, it comes with some more seals as well. Should boost it up to as much as 730FPS, being 660 now? Gotta get busy soon...

I finally got all three tins of new pellets delivered I wanted to test in the Crosman 160 Pellgun v1. Here is video part 1 with A's 160 gas valve upgrade. Then I'll replace the upgrade valve with the QB78 XP-Tuned valve I have that also works in the 160 Pellgun. Then retest all 3 pellets, along with the RWS superpoint extras it likes best currently;

well, I got the old girl out to shoot out the remaining Co2 in it. It was a joy to shoot it again, rather than getting out the next resto rifle. Shot mostly Sig-Sauer Crux's and a couple RWS Superpoint Extras before the gas ran out. The Crux's were definitely the louder of the two! Now she's ready for video part to of testing after the XP-Tuned valve gets installed. I'll be getting to that real soon!

I really need to get going on part 2 of the valve upgrade videos. But for now, here's a pic of the 160 with the new Winchester 4x32AO scope. Just barely fits the rifle in the Ron Robinson mounts. But is adjustable down to 15ft, and 30ft, (5 & 10 yards, respectively) below the yard markings. That should prove handy.

Yesterday afternoon, I started a bit of polishing on the XP-Tuned gas valve parts for the final 160 Pellgun upgrade. The valve stem was scored a bit, but I'm slowly getting it smoothed out. Started with 600-grit emery paper and green Scotchbrite pad. Think it needs to be taken to about 1,000 grit?

Well, as some of you may know, I changed the name of my Youtube show again. It's now, " The Airgun Tinker". My newest logo looks like a village tinker's sign.
And I finally got a picture of all three of my vintage Crosman Co2 rifles together. Left to right, 160 Pellgun variant 1, 55-56. Model 700 Pell Master, 4/69, all original. Model#70 Pellgun, 1974.

Well, it's been awhile since I installed the XP-Tuned gas valve. I also got the Caldwell G2, and a cheap tablet computer that eats batteries too fast. I really want to get back into testing again. So I'm hoping the seals didn't dry out so I can keep the great seal this thing had for testing.
