Title: John in PA does it AGAIN!!!!!
Post by: Extreme .457 on December 02, 2016, 09:14:53 PM
Hello Everybody, I have to post it AGAIN! El Mago, John in PA tuned my .177 HW97 WOW factor AGAIN!!!  This is the 7th gun he has tuned for me I think, maybe 8 I will double check lol. I got her back yesterday, I came home from work late and couldn't shoot her. Well......today I snuck off for an hour and came home, installed the Hawke 4x12x50 AO she had had on her. Three shots and bingo BABY right on the money. Her shot cycle is so sweet and accuracy is the BEST, at 30yards one tiny little hole. I tried a couple of pellets but the CPL proved to be the best. I am really liking the CPL in the box seems that all of my HW's .177 really shoot these great. Weather permitting I will be shooting her a little farther out Sunday. My Grandson's have a football tournament and GrandPa has to be there no if and or butts. I plan on shooting out to 55yards my front yard range. The last gun I received from John was my R9 .20 she shot wonderful before but, after the tune she is perfect. I sent John a vid of my R9 .20 groups and shots, he too was very impressed with this little gun. I now have the best spring piston guns I could ever possibly have. Next to El Mago (The Magician) is my RWS48 .177 She is a great power house of a gun. Maybe John can tone her down just a little to shoot the lighter pellets. At the moment she is shooting the JSB 10.3 pellets really good, but I still have several flyers. I will get a great group going then bamm two flyers. Then she settles down again, so off the the Magician she goes. I have really enjoyed shooting these Springers and my powder burner shooting has really  improved.

Just wanted to post a little about my tuned HW97 .177 and the wonderful work Mr. John in PA has done for me.
Take care Everyone and have a wonderful weekend.

No doubt about it.  John is top-notch when it comes to fine-tuning an air gun.  He is just completing the second one I sent him.  But there is another charateristic of his work that impresses me, too.  He communicates!  I am not left in the dark about the progress of the work on my gun.  He makes me feel a part of the process of getting the most out of any air gun I send him.

Yes sir, John keeps you informed and works closely with you for your needs and wants for your gun. Great guy! I was not a springer guy, I wasn't impressed with Springers until I shot a R9 .20 tuned by John!! I actually hit what I was aiming at!!! Lol since then I gave been hooked!! I've shot springers tuned by other tuners (local) which were great guns but, I really like the way mine shoot over the other guys.

   Best of luck Brother Man

I can't put this HW97 .177 down!! I'm amazed at how accurate she is. Before the tune she shot great but, at 40 yards I'm printing one tiny hole!! Wind hasn't been too great for shooting farther out, I'd really love to shoot out to 55yds. 10 shot groups are under 1/4" others a little larger but, she is PERFECT!!! I filled a couple of my SCBA bottles tonight to shoot my Big Bores but, while waiting to bleed the air line every 15min I was shooting my 97 off my front porch. I even popped a couple of sparrows in the pasture across the street. They landed in a mesquite tree, some reason they love this one tree. Cold weather doesn't seem to bother the spring or the tune. Accuracy is great.

Keep John in PA in mind for any of your springer tunes. GREAT GREAT GUY!!

Take care Fellas

When you say John in PA, I assume you mean Pyramyd Air? I have never seen any info on their site regarding air rifle repairs/service. Don't reply if this seems to forward, but I'm wondering what a tune should cost, and what does it involve. (New mainspring, piston seal, barrel seal???) TIA, Randy

Yes, John in P.A. lol at Pyramyd Air there is Gene and Gene does repairs no tunes. John Thomas is a PRO my HW97 .177 is AWESOME!!!!  John also tuned my HW97 .20 and R9 .20 (both) which can out shoot a couple of my PCP guns out to 55yds. Deadly accurate guns after the tune. Before they shot very well but after John's tune so smooth accuracy is perfect and shot cycle is smooth. Too nice!!!!!!! Give John a call, great man and the best Spring Piston Airgun Tuner IMO

    Best of Luck Brother Man

Since my guns are intended heirlooms for my sons and their children, I have even given John a nickname - the "godfather" of my air gun collection.  Yes, he is that good at what he does.

Cost alot?   should probably get my 125 sniper running right one of these days, shipping shouldn't be too bad either since he is only 3 hrs from me.

What's money versus peace of mind (being rhetorical here).

Be patient and followup.  My last communications with him were that he was very busy.  Also be aware that it will take awhile for work on your gun to be completed.  But worth it.

Old Post.  But op what power level is your 97k?

Iove my 97k and it's super accurate but thinking hard about getting it tuned now.  Think the trigger could be a little better with some tlc .    Would like to keep the stock power I think as it's used for hunting and target.      Thanks

Just wanted to add my voice to the praise that John is getting as a tuner. Sent him a Hatsan 95 in .22 cal that I had bought as a refurb. It went over as an okay shooter out to about 30 yds with A 4-lb trigger pull. Before I sent it, a 10-shot group of JSB 18.13gr had an ES of 30fps centered around 670fps (18.08fpe).

It came back cleaned, reworked inside and out with a new piston seal, a couple of spare breech seals and a 2-lb trigger. Now that same 10-shot group of JSB 18.13gr reads as follows: 698, 701, 700, 702, 698, 700, 691, 701, 700, 700. That's an ES of 11fps but it's just 4fps if you leave out the one low reading. I'm wondering if my chrony burped or something bc the group was under 0.5" at 30 yards (very good for me). That's also 19.73fpe.

Thanks John - I recommend him without hesitation.

John is a top of the heap tuner for sure. My RWS48 shot will enough but had a lot of twang so I sent it to John to work his magic. He installed a Vortek tune kit and tuned the T06 trigger to a clean breaking 1.3lbs. The twang was eliminated and the trigger is absolutely wonderful. The shot cycle is smooth as can be. I could not be happier with his work and recommend him to anyone who wants his gun tuned to it's potential.

Spoke with John yesterday. My .22 Pro Sport is fixing to get her tune!!! I'm re finishing a Walnut stock with BLO to match the .177 Walnut stock. That's it on my Avatar, only thing is the .22 stock is taking on a Chocolate color which will be very nice, and I will be able to tell the calibers apart!! I plan on redoing the Beech stock and putting her up for sale. I'm so stoked about that .22 PS I know she will be a great hunter!!! I can't wait to see at what power level she likes best. I know she will be great, John has tuned every Springer I own and I have NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED!!!

   Take care Fellas!!

I took my 52 out yesterday and it is not the same gun I sent to John! It sounds totally different and it seems to shoot smoother with every shot while making the same power. I didn't set up to check accuracy at 25 -50 yards but I was ringing pans at 150 in a 15 mph cross wind with CPHP 7.9s. :D
Hopefully I will have time to try 25-50yards today. So far I am very impressed with what John did to this rifle! ;D

Got my .22 Pro Sport back from John Thurdsay 9/14/18
Installed her new Walnut Refinished stock and scope. Took outside and sighted her at 30yds one little hole with GTO PELLETS. Went back to 55yds WOW!!! She shot several one hole 5shot groups several other .75" other groups 1" all depends on me not being too anxious to continue shooting!!! Lol the cocking effort is so smooth, trigger is butter smooth, shot cycle is so nice, no twang and ACCUARCY is wonderful!!! Before with the lighter pellets (GTO) she was a little harsh, but now it's a nice thunk!!! Have yet to check FPS but with John's paperwork she was at 18.5fpe with the GTO AMMO. I love both of my Tuned Pro Sports .177 - .22
I can't get over how nice the before and after shot cycle is my Spring Piston guns after John gets his hands on them and Works his Magic.

Take care Fellas, shoot and have FUN!!

Another satisfied customer..
I am new to airguns and I learned about John through this thread. I bought a rws 54 from ebay a few months ago and sent it directly to him.
Throughout the last few months I have called him 4 times with questions and he was always extremely friendly and helpful. He will always have my business.

Hey all,
I guess I’m a little biased when it comes to having had John tune my springer into must be over 20 springers 10 years later.
Now the only OTHER tuned spring guns I’ve owned were self tuned by sellers. I was also foolish enough to sell a custom stocked R1 .22 tuned by Mr. Michael McKeown of Airgunstocks.com
Mike is known mainly for his great woodwork and has designed angles into spring gun stocks that help you to visually follow pellets to target like a tuned RWS 54, but no sled.
As far as self tuned spring guns I was very happy with those. Especially the HW80K.
What I want to ask all the experts here is who else tunes spring guns as powerful and smoothly as John does at fair price range?
I’ve heard of V-Mach kits, Hector Medina, Ed K. Motörhead, Paul Watts, etc. Is it preferences or is there a huge gain from one over another?

I have had excellent outcomes using Rob Hawkins.

That said, I’ve gotten to the point where I enjoy tinkering with my springers so much that I’ll likely tune my own guns going forward.  That is one of the things I like best about spring guns.
