I set mine ~12" in front of the muzzle and get consistent readings. To insure that I don't join the I shot my chrony club when setting up the rifle to shoot over the chrony I put a wooden dowel in the barrel to insure the pellet passed ~2 to 3" above both sensors centered and level this insures that I will not need to replace the chrony any time soon

Mine sits 3-5 feet for AG's. The pellet passes thru at the height where the two rods join together, about midway up. I found out the hard way that 3' is to close for my Muzzle loader. Had to reinstall the light shades after the blast blew them off.

Dont want to get off topic but will add this: I was using loose power, not pellets. There is a difference between volume and weight with different loose powder. I wanted to check fps and fpe for 70, 80, 90, and 100 grains by weight. The 80, 90, and 100 blew the light shades off with chrony 3' away. I settled for 75 grain and all was well.
I hunt with a .50 cal Thompson Center Hawkin rifle, using a patch under a round ball pushed by 100 grains of black powder. I wonder what the fps and fpe for that is?
