I buy used for myself, and although it is a cheap car (5k used) it payed for itself the first time someone hit my car. I think if I added up all maintenance on it, I am at $12 bucks a month over the last 7 years. The fuel efficiency is insane. That siad, I freaking hate my car hahaSooner or later the gov't is going to realize that they need to collect a road use tax on EV's....They do impart wear and tear on the roads (tho maybe not as much as gas vehicles due to lack of petroleum and heat) Road use taxes are part of the price of gasoline, so........

A few years ago, South Carolina proposed a bicycle road use tax. You could hear heads explode all the way to kalifornia!!! I had a bike riding friend live there at the time, she didn't like my stand. If you use the roads, you need to pay the upkeep!!!
Facepalm my life living here. Central Coast California is nonsensical

If you use the roads, you need to pay the upkeep!!!The town I grew up in had a bicycle tax. Every bike "housed" in the village was required to have the sticker. They called them licenses and claimed it helped identify the owner if lost or stolen. Until one year at the lost and found auction when all the bicycles had tags on them. Didn't go well for the village in the local paper and many refused to purchase the tags afterwards.
Light vehicles [cars and pickups] don't cause significant wear to well built roads. Transit buses are some of the worst offenders as are short, heavy trucks. These guys can really beat up a road. That said, once there is a substantial market for EVs, you'll see a road tax for them. There is already discussion of a 'mileage tax' and politicians are always looking for more money to waste.I was in the street maintenance business for some years.
