Snake! What kind is it? 🐍
« on: September 14, 2021, 09:56:58 PM »
I just found a snake on my front walkway. Yes, I was barefoot at the time. I thought it was a ground snake at first,  bit it's bigger than the ground snakes that I usually find. It kind of flattened out and scrambled sideways.  It has attitude like it wants to strike, I've not seen that with ground snakes. This snake has a black spot on it's head.

It's about 13 or 14 inches long.
It looks like it's male.
It's 78F now and he seemed pretty perky.

Yes, it seems that it's a brown snake, in the U.S. they aren't venomous, but Australian brown snakes are deadly.

No, it's not dead. I put it into a 1 gallon jug so I can take it to the nature center.

OK, I  set it free at the nature preserve 20 yards from the river. It should be a happy hunting ground for 🐛 bugs there

Yep they have a tude for sure. I rescued one out of the pool skimmer the past week and you'd think it would be grateful I didn't let it drown but it struck the net twice letting me know I disturbed it's peaceful slow death. ::)

Brown snakes will secrete a foul smelling musk if you handle them.  Its quite tenacious and near impossible to wash off your hands! Ask me how Iknow. :P

Looks like a Hog Nose Snake. Did it raise up in a strike position and spread something of a hood. Not as dramatic as a cobra but noticeable.
They are harmless to humans but will bluff and even mock strike (mouth closed). They actually are a rear fanged snake posessing a few long teeth located well back on their jaws. These are used to puncture a toad's lungs (their main prey) which inflate their lungs to prevent themselves from being swallowed by a predictor. Now, they are in fact mildly venomous but the venom (modified saliva) is nowhere potent enough to cause a human any real harm. Also they do not inject their venom but simply secret it and gets absorbed into the bite wound. As already stated they are all bluff and if harassed enough they will frequently roll onto their backs and play dead. They get their name from  a upward lifting group of triangular looking scale covered skin om their nose.

Thanks guys. I do have a small creek in my back yard.  I have seen several small frogs around my yard.  I only use pesticides sparingly.  I have noticed that if I get rid of all insects the birds disappear.  I must treat once a year for grub worms or my grass will die.
I guess I have my own nature center.

Killed a big one when I was little kid. Feel bad about it now but back then I was proud of myself.

Gil, I actually thought that it was venomous,  but I try not to get carried away.  I put it in a cardboard box,  then I posted here. I thought that it could get out of the box, so I moved it to a plastic water bottle. Then it was identified as harmless by Jshooter. So it's all good.

Hunter, I commend you for going above and beyond, and not let ignorant fear dictate your actions. There's just too much of that in this world as is. Probably one of the main reasons why nature is so out of ballanced, in this period of time.

Thanks Dinh!
Not 3 feet from the snake was a little frog about 1 inch long. I didn't see it until I had the snake in the box. It did occur to me that the snake was just doing it's job, but so was the frog. L O L.
