I have a new Benjamin Cayden rifle and had noticed that the wood around the pressure gauge and other edges seemed to be pretty rough. I decided to remove the stock to see if I could sand some areas down a bit. I had a heck of time getting the stock off as it had the rifle assembly pressed into it quite firmly. Once I got it off I noticed just how rough the mill work was. There was no sanding done at all and lots of walnut "strands" from the milling bit. I gave it a bit of sanding with 1000 grit paper to remove the biggest chucks and also sanded around all of the edges of the rifle assembly cavity. I then gave it a good rubbing of butcher block conditioner. The stock then went on with ease and the rifle and stock looks much better. I wonder if I have a "friday" gun, or if this is pretty common.

i have the set of 3 craftsmans .. the cayden is the smoothest actually but they all are pretty much unfinished, just a light stain looks like .. i think they would turn out beautiful with several applications of true oil sanded in to fill and then several more to gloss it up ... not quite sure how ro handle the stipling as far as the sanding goes, could tape it off i guess, until the finishing coat phase ... i need to get some truoil and make a project out of one to see how it turns out ...
