Title: Practice, practice, practice...
Post by: EdinGa on June 14, 2021, 11:37:31 AM
Shooting my Diana Stormrider at 90 yards so this isn't an entry. It is my best group so far with the 10.5 CPUMs. I'm hoping to have my range opened up to 100 in the next week or so.

Thanks! I started out plinking at a metal pan and realized that this barrel really likes the 10.5s. I'm shooting early in the morning when the wind is calm, and utilizing a very small portion of the power curve. 10 more yards of debris to clear and I hope to have a valid submission.

Looks like you'll be able to make the NUAH in no time once you get those 10 more yards of brush cleared  :D
Good shootin'

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I'm not giving up on this little rifle until I get it done.

Very impressive! I would hate to see the trajectory chart on that one! I have done 100 more than a few times but never with a .177. Keep at it! ;D

Thank you! I'm zeroed at 30 yards if I remember right, and it's 3 dots of holdover. They're flying around 980-990 fps.

Only had time for one attempt this morning. The low one was number 5. I knew it was bad when I touched it off. Not blaming the wind, the gun, or the pellet. Still shooting at 90 yards.

I changed my setup too. I'm shooting off a plastic table with a bipod and a rear bag now.

First try at 100. If the rain holds off long enough for me to finish my target box I'll try again on an official target.

Tried again right before the rain hit, but in my haste lost count and took 6 shots. Looks like 2 or 3 days of rain ahead, so I'm hoping to had a good submission sometime next week.

that'll tighten up with some good ammo.  Crosman shouldn't even be on the list, IMO.

I've got better pellets and better rifles but I'm determined to do it with a sub $200 gun, a cvlife 3-9x and cheap pellets.

You might be fishing with the wrong pole, but good luck!  I assume you've already accomplished this at shorter distances?

Good shooting Ed!  :D Might be a little low and to the right with an extra shot; but still a very good group!

The first time I tried them in this rifle I was propped against a tree shooting at a metal skillet I have hanging at 85 yards. I ended up with a 2 inch group, so I knew I had a good combination. I've duplicated that at least half a dozen times. I have my range cleared out to 100 yards now, but I haven't had a chance to build a bench yet so I shooting off a folding plastic table. This is the second group at 100 that's just over 2 inches without washing, sorting or measuring head size. The only luck I needed was finding out this rifle likes these pellets.

Thanks, Jesse! I made some adjustments, but I was dealing with an 8 mph wind this morning. I hope I didn't go too far. We'll find out when this rain let's up.

I'm enjoying this thread, and your quest for the club.
I have a QB78 that I used to shoot at 10 meters in my apartment, but we now have a house with some property.  Sitting on the front porch, I had a swinger set up at about 60 yards, and could hit it with the wadcutters about 30-40% of the time.  Switched to using the Crosman 10.5 pellets and I'm over 60%, but the slightest breeze wreaks havoc.  I have nowhere near the FPS that you're getting, but wind drift is still such a huge factor for the .177 pellets.
Keep at it though, and you'll eventually reach your goal!

Thanks for following along, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I made it after a bunch of targets and just the right conditions. You're right about the wind and these .177s. It really blows them around.

I love the spirit in which you take on the NUAH challenge, Ed!
Very cool! 👍🏼
And congrats! 😊

I was working on a NUAH submission as well — with a sub-$100 springer in .22cal.... and I could see this might work out.

But then I bought some PCPs.
And shot exclusively PCP's for a couple years. Then I had visitors using my PCPs and I dug out the springer.
➔ 😱 And I was totally frustrated!, disgusted!,  shocked! — at the shot cycle, the noise, the lack of precision, the hold-sensitivity — O it was the pits.
No, I will never go back to that....

Thank you, Matthias! I finally qualified with this rig, but even a little wind sure blows .177s around.

Just like you, I started out shooting springers, but once I got ahold of a pcp and hand pump, I never looked back.

looks like fun Ed...there is a satisfaction to doing well with cheap pellets... But my Storm does not...only likes Sniper Mags and 10.3 A.A. so far... nasty accurate at 35 yards with said pellets tho... stock barrel with just some leade work...

initial testing of it and my Urby  here...  https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=151471.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=151471.0)

Mine is a Gen1 clearance... has it's faults and pluses...

One of the pluses is 25 fpe with 15g dead stock... I believe they are ported to .140"(both .177 & .22)... that means a longer barrel should pick up the fpe 'specially with the .177... and the cool thing is the way the storm is set up do not have to degas to change barrels... just loosen the grub screws...

So yep would love to give mine like 3 or more different barrels and call him the Monkey King...a different personality is just a barrel change away.. ;)

For heavier pellets was thinking could use a Maximus barrel that extra 6"+ of barrel should turn it into a 30+ fpe  rifle in .177... would open up a couple barrel bands to .5" and sleeve the barrel to match...

well anyways Back to CPUM doing best at 100... I believe it for sure... back in about 2014 saw a y tube vid of a guy with a Steyr .177 and it was 10.3 CPUM that was most accurate with groups comparable to yours... also they are the most accurate pellet in my .177 Buccaneer... It really is funny to me how folks dump on Crosman/Benji pellets... you never really know what will work best... Had a 2100 that after I choked the barrel was a laser with the Crosman 7.4 pointed... My first Maximus liked CPHP 14.3 best... Oh well their loss...

well any ways nice job blazing the trail of 100 yards with a Storm... cheap ammo rifle and scope...you blazed a trail with your Urban and BBT also... it is showing that an air rifle can do very well without costing a mint...not to mention it's fun...

Hope your day is going well,

Thanks for your input, Kirby! I'm always grateful to see your name pop up in one of my posts.

I try to live within my means, and I'm not a patient person when it comes to saving up for things like airguns. Mid to low end guns work just fine for me, and if cheaper pellets work that's icing on the cake.

My Stormrider has a stock hammer spring, and shoots lighter pellets supersonic, so heavies are a must. I'm pretty well stocked up on the 10.5 CPUMs so I'm all set. I have to admit having a 177 at this power level is a hoot.
