Spanish made Varmint Hunter

Hello air rifle community,
I have an older Gamo Varmint hunter ( pre 2010). I need a little guidence on what the problem is. It has shot wonderfully since i purchased in 2009. Just yesterday it wont cock completly. It wont transfer the tension off the barrel or click at the end of the pump. I suspect the spring has reached its end, as i am not sure i would appreciate any feedback on the matter. thank you much. Brian

Hi, and welcome. It could be the spring, but if it is I don't think that's all it is. It sounds as though you still have spring tension. The description sounds more like a failure to latch at the end of the cocking stroke. You could even have something sticking in the trigger mechanism preventing things from returning to rest position after your last shot. Does your trigger return to the full forward position?
If you decide to dismantle it, assume the spring is good and still under preload. Use a spring compressor!!
On the other hand, if you remove the action from the stock the problem may be obvious.
Good luck!!

Thanx Roadworthy,
I am still assembling spring compressor but as soon as i am done. gonna dismantle it. Also considering a nitrogen gas spring upgrade.
Yes, the trigger returned to rest position. The final shot was real hard to pump

Okay, Inspector, I'm going to leap out here and assume it's a single stroke to cock break barrel. I had a similar problem with a Crosman Nitro Venom. One of the denizens of this forum suggested the piston may be cocked just a bit off and binding. In the instance of my Crosman I was always able to cock it, I would just have to back off and retry a couple of times. There was also kind of a grinding gravelly noise while cocking. I don't know the actual problem - Crosman just said return it to them - warranty.
Back to your problem - BigBlock454 just did a fantastic spread in the Spanish Gate covering the conversion of a Gamo airgun to a nitrogen spring. It does involve replacing the piston as well as the spring. There is a little spacer disk as well, I think it's for preload on the gas spring. As long as it's apart you might want to take a careful look at the seal as well.
I wish you good luck.

Easy thing to check. Take the three screws that hold the action in the stock and look at the spring and see if you see any doubling coils or loose pieces of spring inside the gun, if you do then it is time for a new spring. You can not get internal parts directly from Gamo, not that I would want to with the much better ones available from ARH, you need a FFL for that.
Air Rifle Headquarters sells springs (E3650 or Tarantula) that will replace your spring, pretty much a drop in replacement. I would also get a new main seal also, get the Gamo tune kit with spring and two seals and all the lube you will need then head to the Library and start reading about tuning...
While you have it apart you might as well put in a GRT III trigger blade if you haven't already.

if your taking it apart, dismantle the trigger assembly and check the upper sear & spring. If this spring has broken it will cause your issues. This sear is under quite a bit of spring pressure and it grabs & holds the "bolt" until the trigger is squeezed. While you have the trigger assembly apart, file all the rough edges of the 3 parts and the housing also. If ya got $33, upgrade the trigger blade to a GRT-3.
Hope this helps,
Todd

Here's the link for ARH. Scroll down and you'll find your spring. Also makes the seals and full tuning kits, if you like. G'Luck!
