Benjamin Traveller Gen 2 low pressure mod - cooling coil

Decided to mod my Benjamin Traveller Gen2 compressor after operating it without the cover...
I noticed that the air line going from the bottom of the piston to the water bleed got so hot that I couldn't touch it after only a few seconds (show in my hand in picture).
To fix this I decided to order some 4mm copper tubing and some compression fitting ferrules. They came in today and I made the mod. Found an old broom handle and wound the coil around the threaded end, which turned out to be the perfect size to fit the tubing and allow bending without kinking the tube. I ran it a few times into the deadhead plug to make sure nothing was going to blow out, and the coil remained nice and cool. Only took about 1 turn to get the temperature back down, longer run times should be able to hold to near ambient temperatures.
If anyone sees a serious flaw in what I did, I'd like to know about it. But pretty sure it will be fine. Only known issue is that flow rate is slightly lower. I was also seeing slightly lower power draw, not sure if it is related to a slightly lower input pressure to the HP stage. But it did fill to 3000psi in about the same amount of time that it took before the mod.

I am following your investigations to this compressor. I plan to look into the loose electrical connections you mentioned in your other post. Looks like a good idea, but I am surely no expert. Have you tried to fill any guns that go higher than 3000 psi?
I'd be interested to know where you got the tubing and fittings. I'm guessing they are not regular plumbing supply stock.

I don't have anything that takes about 3000psi, so I haven't tried higher pressures. But this is also on the "low side" so it shouldn't ever see higher pressures.
The tubing I got on Amazon, McMaster didn't have what I was looking for and Amazon did.
and
and a tubing cutter
Ended up kinking a couple of my first bends while I learned to be more careful, only wasted a couple inches of tubing.
The stock tubing seemed to be copper clad aluminum or something similar, had about the same wall thickness. I used a little over 1 meter of tubing, if I were to do it again I would probably shorten the straight "legs" a little to drop it down, and maybe fewer coils like 6.5 to 8.5. That might get it into a 1 meter section but for the price I have enough that I can make the stock shape again if for some reason I find that this just don't work in the long term.
You will need to cut the stock tubes to get the nuts off, or try and figure out what those nuts might be and by them.

Pumped up my Bulldog from empty, did some work on the port... Took a bit longer and almost seemed to struggle getting from 2800 to 3000 psi. Not sure why, but something to keep an eye on.

Greg,
Brilliant idea and execution.
BTW I picked up 35 FPS BY removing my Bulldogs valve return spring.

I'll have a question in a new thread about the Bulldog, something doesn't seem right with mine. Check the Bigbore section.
I'll be testing my compressor mod a bunch more tomorrow, got some testing into a bucket to do. Going to need to cast more ammo soon, running low on 125gr stuff.

Ran this for several cycles today... It definitely takes longer to top up now. I may need to do a little more work. The right angle bends tend to restrict a bit and that is probably making it fill more slowly.

I think the reason for the slower functioning is that you have effectively put in place a volume buffer between the two stages - the longer cooling pipe dramatically increases the volume of air between the first and second stage.
What this leads to, given that the stages function together on a fixed ratio, is that you are probably reducing the pressure going into the second stage (since you have more volume there after the first stage check valve, the pressure will be lower). Thus it will take longer (more cycles) to get to the same volume of high pressure air.

Yup, that could be true too. It also draws about 1 to 2 amps less current as shown on the display, definitely no working as hard. The stupid loud fan draws like 13 amps before you even start the compressor, that's half the max current.

Definitely longer fill times on the two guns I have, going to make a new coils with fewer turns and not tighten the fittings as much.
Getting more water out of the first stage separator which has to be a good thing.

Sat down with the tubing that was left and made new coils, blowing through I can definitely feel more flow through this shorter line. I was also a lot more careful with the bending. Hopefully this improves my fill times.

Better to add some fins to the tube and keep it short
