I use the HAWKE 4-12x40 Air Max. It's the perfect length and doesn't block the loading port and it's air gun rated.
I've had everything from a hawke sidewinder 6-24x56, sidewinder ED 10-50X60, Tac vector sentinel 10-40x50, and falcon X50 scopes on my 97s.If you put a scope on the 97, I would use a single piece scope mount.

I Can tell by your scopes and magnification you're much more serious about this. I'm the weak link in all my stuff.

I just need the magnification for ranging assistance in Field Target. Is your 97 factory? And what power level is it?Cam

Again, what I love about them is that when you line the front of the scope up with the rear of the loading port, the scope is a perfect length for me where it sits at the rear of the rifle. I use the BKL rings and at first I was having trouble with scope creep but Motorhead gave me a little piece of advice that put an end to that. Which was to use a cleaning solvent (I just used 90% denatured alcohol) and thoroughly clean the dove tail and the feet of the scope rings. Then, put a little dab of loctite on the feet of the scope rings then torque it down. I let mine cure for 24 hours before firing and it hasn't moved in 400 pellets shot.
I don't like having to use stop pins and I don't in my HW97 and HW80 .177. I put a Diana Zero Recoil Mount on my HW80 .20 and it has a screw which goes into the most forward mounting hole on the rifle. That works. The R9 has a two piece, the FWB has a one piece, my HW35E .177 has a two piece--all without stop pins. I haven't had slippage of scope on any of them once all screws on the rifle and mount and rings and such were permanently tightened and/or marked.Hope it helps!
It's probably the mounts/rings. As it is, this arrangement has worked for me with the rings on them and they were the ones that wouldn't slip! The two piece rings are either UTG Leaper or HN Sport Match; neither of which is expensive to get. They were throw ins from other packages I got in the past. The recoil of the 97 is not like the recoil of the 80, yet both have two piece rings and mounts that hold their place in unaltered out of the box guns.I didn't put a scope on the other 35E since the sights work well enough, as do the HW sights on any of their rifles. The stop pin keeps slamming the area towards the rear to create a gash in time that you will see after removing the mount (after firing a few hundred times).
