Title: RWS Diana Model 52L Luxus/Luxor
Post by: cjtamu on August 15, 2022, 12:16:20 PM
Gifted my wife a HW30S Deluxe for our anniversary. She gifted me a RWS Diana Model 52L I'd stumbled on. There are worse problems to have in a relationship ha ha. T05 trigger. Manufacture date of 10/07. Came with RWS 6 x 42 AO IR scope. Vortek PG2 kit installed. Originally thought it was beech (if you saw the "Before pics you'd know why" but the stock appears to be walnut with a dark (looks like darker walnut) piece at the tip of the forestock. Grip cap looks like rosewood. Purchased from Airgun Revisions and Rich's listing said it was a "Luxor" model that was produced especially for Pyramyd. Looking for any info on this particular model or any need to know info on the 48/52 T05 platform in general. Gun shoots beautifully with H&N Barracuda Match 10.65 gr and is an absolute HAMMER for a .177!

Gun is excellent mechanically. My only concern right now is about these funky RWS Diana 2-piece spring-loaded scope rings it came with. They each have precisely ONE bolt holding them to the rail. I flipped the inner insert so the rear arrestor pin is in the hole in the rail and took a SWAG and torqued the rail bolts to 25 in-lb. Rings are at 15 in-lb. Have read about some people having issues with the arrestor pins on T01 and T05 guns gouging out the holes and pulling out because they're so shallow. I don't need that because this rail is pristine. Wondering if I should use the arrestor pin on the front ring as well and/or sleeve the pins so they have less wiggle room in the hole? Ditch those rings and go with something else? Is there a consensus on the best mount to use with the T05 guns? Thinking of taking the scope off until I get some comfort with best way to mount. I took 5 shots at 10M with open sights on Saturday and it's a laser at that distance. Any info on the best way to mount much appreciated. If a scope dies, so be it. Much rather send in a scope on warranty claim than bugger this rail up.

Being new to GTA I can't post pics. There are a couple of threads with this gun on AGN. "N+1" thread in the Traditional Airguns section has the pics and "RWS Diana 52L" in General Discussion just looking for info. When I searched for info on this gun looked like there were more Diana folks on this forum than anywhere else. Someone there told me Hector Medina was the guru for all things Diana, and I'd been meaning to join here for months anyway. I'd post the url here but I'm not quite sure of the rules in linking to other forums, and seems like I read in the rules maybe I need at least 20 posts to put in s url? If I'm allowed I'll gladly post the links. Pics available on AGN for now. Thank in advance for any info on this wonderful rifle.

Edit: Don't seem to have significant barrel droop issues with this one. It was 3 dots low at 10 yards (maybe 3"?) and 1.25 dot (1.5" or less) or so low at 20 yd. Guessing the elevation will be real close at 30 yd which is probably where I'll zero this one.

Hey Steve, glad to see you here. Don’t mind at all, very much appreciate it. I’m like Gene Wilder in Blazing saddles. “Need any help”? “Oh, all I can get”.  ;D

October will be 7 years I've been a member here  but was already in a UK springer forum before I did. Joined AGN  and a few others later.

Absolutely gorgeous. I have a 54 with the standard beech stock and am very jealous of that walnut!

Thank you. Even with 15 years of smoke residue on it I thought, “Man, that doesn’t look like beech to me”. Front piece is I believe Oregon walnut or similar. Kudos go to SteveP-52 for the call on the grip cap. Very happy to have it.

Some smoke sponge may work at carefully removing that residue for you

I've never seen that! The Orange Glo did a great job removing the smoke residue from the stock. If I were able to post pictures you'd see instantly. The odor remains. Smells like it's either pipe or cigar. Headed to the store shortly to get one of those boxes of baking soda that have the cheese cloth top so they don't spill all over your fridge. I'll just keep putting them in the case with the gun until it's gone.

Got some information from Hector Medina. He said on occasion Diana will put out a limited number of these "Luxus" stocks. This particular rifle was only made for a couple of years. Stock is walnut. The cap is rosewood. He said while not exceedingly rare they're not that common, believes less than 50 were imported into the US. After the Luxus came the "Superior", which was a decorated beech stock. Many thanks to Mr. Medina for the information. If I stated anything incorrectly please let me know. Now I just have to figure out what to do about scope mounting. Leaning towards the Diana Bullseye ZR. My main goal is to protect the scope rail on this gun. Betting I can replace a scope easier than I could replace that rail!

Glad Hector could help you. He might also be the only way you find that ZR mount since retailers
haven't had any in quite awhile.
Sportsmatch does make what they call the DampaMount, which is a recoil absorbing 1 piece mount
and one to look into if you can't find a ZR.

Found the ZR mount just wondering if it's the answer. Saw some rumblings about bad grouping with it but I think that was the older version. From what I've been able to find the biggest issue with the T01/T05 rails is how shallow the holes are for the arrestor pin. Couple that with the fact the pin diameter is smaller than the hole and often chamfered on the bidness end and it just rides right up out of the hole eventually and gouges the rail. Best fix I've found so far is similar to my sleeve idea, but he used a set screw with big enough OD to remove the play. Also ground the business end flat so it didn't slide out of the hole. The ZR mount they apparently recommend NOT using the arrestor pin so you don't have that issue with it. Still exploring options. For now it's a 10 M gun ha ha.

Thanks for the link, but this scope has 30 mm tube. Pyramyd actually has the version that will do 1" and 30 mm. I heard from Hector Medina today and I think he's going to get me set up. Worth waiting a little bit and making sure I get it done right. The system wouldn't let me quote your post because it has an external link in it and I don't have enough posts. Funny.

First, go in the Welcome New Member Gate and say hi to 9 or 10 new members and you'll have your 20...lol.

With the ZR mounts, the 1st gen ones were made in Germany and had some issues. The 2nd gen versions were made in China
and very oddly, better built. I have a 2nd gen China made one that comes with the ring inserts so it will work with both 1 inch
and 30mm tube scopes. I'm still abusing it with a 1 inch Hawke Vantage scope but so far, no issues with it or the scope.

Not sure what all Hector does to "accurize" them, but last I knew, he charged $145 for one of his accurized ZR mounts and shooters
who bought them spoke quite highly about them.

Wise words!  Do it right the first time and there is no second or third time... ;)

Yep, the Accurized version is what I’m waiting on. He said the ZR mount will protect both the scope and the rail so I’m all for it.. Going to put a better scope on it and keep the original scope and mounts safe. I like the old skool cool and don’t want anything to happen to it. When I can post pics I’ll put up a couple of these funky little mounts.

Couple pics I've been meaning to put up. The first is the rail clamp bolt for the mounts that came with it. You just flip the insert depending on whether you want to use a recoil pin. I assume the spring is an early attempt at reducing recoil to the scope because I can't think of any other reason for it to be there. Other two are the Before pics of the stock. That's why I thought it was beech in the original pics I saw of the gun. Been getting some rain here so used the time to put a few coats of teak oil on it and it's come back really nicely. Wanted to thank Hector Medina and a couple other folks who contacted me behind the scenes as well as the people who posted here helped me get this sorted. Looking forward to getting one of Hector's Accurized mounts and seeing what I can do with it.

One more time. 52 Luxus as it sits now with the Accurized ZTR mount from Hector and Athlon 4-14 FFP scope. Big difference from the 6X RWS scope that was on it. Can really see how well this gun shoots now. Many thanks to Hector and the other GTA folks that helped. Now I just need to learn how to tune this trigger a little!
