I have peep sights on all of my airguns. I do all my shooting under 20 yards, and because the sights are so close to the barrel you have practically no elevation adjustment whether you shoot at 5 or 20 yards. Try that with a scope that's mounted an inch and a half or more off the barrel.I'll have to check out the 1.5 magnifiers you speak of. Never heard of them.
I have peeps and match sights on most of my rifles. Last spring I picked up an older Gehmann iris with the magnification built in.... I really like it. Basically I use the iris adjustment to focus on the front sight and then adjust the magnification to sharpen the target image. Sometimes depending on the light I do a bit of a balancing act between the two adjustments. Originally I tried the iris on my HW55 but was getting a bit of extra glare from the sun. I then moved it to my Anschutz 335S as that rear sight has a short anti-glare tube. With the magnification I can use super fine front post sights that I couldn't use before. I have other adjustable irises w/o magnification that could bring the fine posts into focus but then the target image wasn't so great.
I have settled on AOS's Microsight, and have found it, to MY eyes, a superior rear sight complement.

davemac, the HW ball post insert is pretty small but I don't need magnification for that one. I found a card of inserts for my Anschutz and Steyr sights and they are even finer.. the magnification really helps.

Benny those are sweet does your magnification device screw directly in your sights without a adapter, I have the old Peepsights that came with my HW55 and am hoping the Gehmann will be a direct fit
