British airgunners bemoan the fact that they have to live with springers that are designed to shoot much harder than they must within the British legislation, where de-tuning is a mandatory standard. Powerful guns simply don't work too well at 12 fpe, and even the sole remaining British springer manufacturer doesn't build 12 fpe guns, in the real meaning.
That being said, there's no question many "magnums" work very well when de-tuned just a little.

Springers are not like compressed gas guns. Most of the pressure releases within a short distance from the breech, so there's negligible expansion further along like a PCP would generate. From that point on the pellet is slowing due to friction. If you are thinking the longer barrel will dampen piston slam, it will not. And because airgun sites show velocities with light pellets, it doesn't mean they are good to shoot. Speed sells, so they toss them in because it's expected due to advertising.

No I wasn't suggesting the longer barrel would have anything to do with piston slam
I was wondering why the top .22 did not produce more peak energy than the top .177-top energy for both calibers was 23 ft lbs
But on average the .22 pellets produced more energy-but the top number-for both .177 and .22 was 23 ft lbs.-I did not post the .22 numbers but did report that 13/19 were 20 ft lbs
or more-but just 3 of 31 .177 were 20 ft lbs or more.
My guess was because the barrel was too long-and maybe it was actually slowing down-or perhaps it was just not picking as much energy
Now I did suggest that if a zinc pellet has a stiffer skirt-and its release was later in time-then its release would be at higher pressure
and That higher back pressure COULD decrease piston slam-slowing piston velocity.
But safe bet the no lead pellet manufacturers have that in mind when they design the pellet-probably design so release is timed the same- 8/1000 sec after piston starts down I think.

I looked more closely-the .22 did not have any light pellets-so it wasn't going to produce really high energies.
Lightest .22 was 13.9 grains-lightest .177 was 6 grains or so- a 9-10 grain .22 would have been about equivalent-probably would produce 25 ft lbs or so-maybe more.

You should also be able to get a B28 barrel from Mike at Flying dragon. It should be push and play...
