I am be and new to this sport. I have interest in squirrel hunting. How long may I leave the rifle cocked. Should I cock and load after spotting my quarry or what is the best way to approach this?

You can leave if cocked for months at a time with no effect on the spring. Shoot it into the dirt at the end of the day is what most will do.

You can load it and cock it when you begin your hunt and leave it that way.
If you don't get anything on your hunt, then shoot the load into the ground and put the gun in a safe place.

I had left my tuned HW95 cocked for 4 months by accident.. I lost about 3% in velocity.
For a daily hunt, don't worry about it.
But leaving any springer cocked for months, you will likely see some decline.

Power loss from leaving it cocked really depends on the exact spring and gun. It may lose nothing over months or something in a few days. It has to do materials and design. I left my Hw30 cocked over a weekend and lost 7%. Left the same gun cocked overnight with no loss. That said I wouldn't hesitate to leave a gun cocked a few hours while hunting. The noise and motion of cocking the gun can easily scare your quarry.
