Your opinion on which Avenger setup and why please?
« on: November 24, 2021, 05:33:01 PM »
I have two .22 Avengers, each set up differently. One is shooting 25.4gr FX pellets at 42.41 fpe and 867 fps....the other is setup for shooting 18.13gr JSB Heavies at 35.88 fpe and 944 fps.

So what is your opinion as to which gun for hunting small to medium game?

Is there any more benefit by using the 25.4gr pellets other than bucking the wind better?

Depending on what you are shooting at and the distance involved, I'd say no.

That said, what do you consider "medium sized" game and how far are you shooting? If something like ground hogs at 75 yards then maybe yes for more retained energy.

Not enough of a drastic difference to make me grab one over the other for hunting small game….not too sure what you envision as “medium game” is the same idea as I have in my head (Ohio has different "medium" sized critters than south Louisiana).

Buddy, just for cost I'd opt to shoot the .22/18gr as .22 ammo is cheaper! That's the only reason. For larger critters the .25 but then again you could tune your .22 to shoot the 25gr Redesigned! LOL! Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the replies. Both guns are .22  ;) The 18s are still a little cheaper a 500 tin vs a 350 tin for the same price.
Medium game for me would be groundhogs to coyote.

3600 fill with reg set at 1900. Why ? Less stress on system. 22 cal JSB 15,89 grain.

I shoot better with more velocity.  I'm not a very good judge in trajectory.

Buddy, sorry I miss read your original post, my bad (old fart here)! The .22/25gr Redesigned pellets have a better BC than its .25/25gr sibling! I like that you have a mid weight pellet slinger and a .22 heavy pellet slinger! You should try a sample pack of NSA slugs as I believe the Avengers have non choked barrels and their BC is astonishing. I have my .22 RAW (non choked barrel) tuned to shoot 18gr pellets @ 950fps and on the same tune, NSA 17.5gr slugs @ 935fps....@ 20yds even though the slugs are moving slower, their POI is 3 MOA clicks higher! The slugs NEED to fit snug (but not too tight) in a non choked barrel as the slugs are spin stabilized and they need the grooves to grab and twist them or they spiral.

I have a .22 and a .177 Avenger.
Both are shot at 1.5" spinner targets about 60-70 yards away with excellent accuracy (on average 8-9 hits out of 10 when there is little wid or the wind is consistent in velocity/direction).

The .22 Avenger gives me 100-105 shots with CPHP .22 14.3 grains from 850 FPS (at 4300 PSI) down to 790 FPS (at 1300-1400 PSI), regulator is set around 1200-1300 PSI).

The .177 Avenger gives me 110-120 shots with CPHP .177 7.9 grains from 920 FPS (at 4300 PSI) down to 850 FPS (at 1300-1400 PSI), regulator is set around 1200-1300 PSI).

I am ony target shooting, and the regulated Avengers are very accurate at the 60-70 yard range with cheap CPHP pellets.
There is no air rifle for the less than $350 price that I am aware of (except for DAR which may be a contender) that is capable of that accuracy and number of shots.

I also own a Gamo Urban which is almost as accurate at that range for about 20-30 shots.
The Benjamin Prod (24-32 shots in the 650-730 FPS range depending on tuning) is not capable of much accuracy in the 60-70 yard range, best used under 30-40 yards.

the faster one if its accurate .. its going to shoot flatter, and in the real world you dont got time to turn turrets and adjust fancy shooter rests .. on small stuff a faster projectile usually takes them out better to, because both are gonna  blow through but the faster one if it hits bone will cause more shock and damage ...
... bigger stuff yeah the heavier one, id keep it under 40 or so unless you really know it ..

It's worth testing to be sure but a heavier pellet with the same basic construction (i.e. domed) should penetrate better.  Either should be fine until you get to something like a coyote.  Then you may want the most penetration you can get.

To get a handle on the trajectory I mess around with chairgun.  That will give you a pretty good idea which has the least drop at the ranges you want to use them.  I like to sight my air rifles to have a zero as far out as possible and not have a mid trajectory rise more than 1/4 inch.  That lets me ignore holding over or under from 10 or 15 yards (depending on how high the scope is) and a little beyond the zero point - probably around 40 yards for your guns.

Set up one gun for slugs. The lethality between the slugs and the Pellets you listed is huge. Wind resistance, flatter trajectory and higher velocity and energy down range.
When you start getting up in size and weight, critters like yotes and fox, a .25 will provide an edge over a .22 but slugs give you some latitude in killing power. Likely they will be as cheap if not less expensive. Nielsen's, NAS, FX Hybrids. I've got 2 Avengers as well. The .25 is usually relegated to hunting, particularly larger game and the .22 is by far the gun I shoot targets most often. Basically the .22 is setup with a "Econo Tune" Still shooting over 800 fps and delivering over 220 Fps at the muzzle. Gophers, Ground Squirrels, Birds, Chipmunks etc, up to and including occasional bunnies at reasonable range and well placed shots.

Some interesting remarks here  ;D I appreciate it.

I've tried Griffin and NSA slugs but they weren't as accurate as the pellets. The Griffins were .217 20 grains and the NSA were .217 17.5 grains. I should try some .216s.

Buddy, how did the NSA load into the breech, easy or snug? The reason I'm asking is because the ones that shoot well in mine load snug not easy or loose. Also, at shorter distances, the slugs usually have not fully stabilized. If the groups are good at close ranges, they might tighten up more at 30-40yds and beyond. Mine hated the NSA 17.5gr .217 but luv the 17.5gr .2175. Here are two separate groups touching one another at 20yds with the .2175.
