i was walking the Croatan National Forest hunting squirrels today. this was my 1st time out after moving to NC last May. with 20mph winds and higher gusts, i was carrying my old Marlin .22 with a Sweet 22 scope mounted on it. only an hour in when i received a call from the diesel mechanic that he was available so i cut it short, jumped back in the truck and after a 20 minute ferry ride i was back in Pamlico county. after the mechanic left the dock, i noticed a squirrel foraging in our tiny woods. i grabbed the HW100BP-K and tried to be as quiet as i could. i couldn't find that squirrel so i took a seat leaning on a big fir tree. not 5 minutes had past when i heard the bark of a squirrel. i took my time and moved very slowly down to the big pine that sits on the shore. it took me awhile to finally find him. he was about 30' up and close. i turned the scope down to 4x and still couldn't get a good focus on him. (scope focuses down to 10 yards) then i realized i was looking into the sun, so i slowly stepped back 5 yards until i had a clear shot. the 8gr. Polymag struck head on just left of the right eye and he fell with a thud. this one had dancing in his genes and he did his best Fred Astaire.
he's in the refridgerator now awaiting a marinade and then on the grill tomorrow for lunch.

Thanks to all. I'm not sure if these greys are smaller than what we had back in the Midwest or it was juvenile. I have noticed the in town squirrels aren't very large. Perhaps it's because their main forage are pine cones rather than nuts? Speaking of in town. This town is infected with squirrels. I've never seen anything like it.

Congrats on first blood in NC. That's a gray, and they should get bigger than that, even in the south. Pine nuts are a lot more work than the forage we have up here, but that doesn't account for it. They have a good work ethic. My guess is it's a pup from a second brood this year. The breeding season down there is much longer than up here.
Hunting with a powderburner? When you pull the trigger and hear all that noise, I think you'll wrinkle your nose at what a knuckle-dragger you feel like.
How're the old knees holding up?

I did cringe a bit when I sighted the marlin in. I forgot how loud they are. I'm going out again tomorrow, but the HW100BP-K will be with me.
I'm seeing an ortho next month about the left knee. It's been giving out a lot more. At least down here I don't have all those ravines to traverse, everything here is flat and sandy.

Very possible. I've had arthroscopic surgery on the left knee 4 times and the right twice. The left knee is almost bone on bone at this point.
