20 FPE .177 @ 100 Yards?
« on: September 26, 2021, 06:07:57 PM »
I know most 100+ shooting is being done with larger calibers.

But what is the feasibility of using an accurate 20 FPE .177 to shoot at 100 yards in an NUAH attempt?

A .22 will buck the wind and retain more energy on target at that range compared to a .177

Can ONLY offer up some personal experience ....
This season i competed in an extreme Field target match ( 30 to 100 ) and Bench rest match  ( 75 & 100 ) at the same venue over 2 days.
I brought out a .177 caliber rifle to do this with. tho power was near 36 fpe !!
While it did well in the Field target challenge is was near the bottom in Bench rest being bested by near every other caliber !!!  HAD IT BEEN ONLY a 20 fpe rifle ?   Just a joke IMO being way too far out for the caliber especially at only 20 fpe.  Will a .177 at .20 fpe shoot that far .. Absolutely .... do so accurately .... Nope  :P
I competitively shoot Field target out to 55 yards and that's TOUGH staying inside a 1 1/2" circle if any wind is present with a .177 at 20 fpe.

1st hand experience .. not hearsay or telling you what you wish to hear .... sorry.

I've also been into .177 for a real long time. After so many rounds, and a notebook to jot down my dope for different wind conditions. I was able to land 1st round hits at 100 yards on soda cans, using a gamo magnum .177 , 10.3 gr, coming out to 22fpe.
After getting a .25 I hardly ever pick up the .177 lol. The wind drift is so much less , and more predictable.
BTW here is my .177 nuah I never submitted because I accidentally took a 6th shot.

Good luck, I haven't been able to get sub moa with a .22 cal yet. Had to jump up to .30 cal before I started doing it consistently.

Hope to get my hands on a .22 rifle/pellet combination that will put me over that hurdle one day. And again we're probably talking 45 + fpe to get me there?

I've done it with both my .25 cal rifles, but not consistent like the .30

Stephen, there is no reason that on a calm day you should not be able to qualify as a Member in NUAH.... You need only put 3 shots out of 5 in the 4" diameter 8 ring to qualify.... and that has certainly been done more than once with a .177....  Getting into the higher Divisions will be more difficult, of course, so all I can say is give it a try and see how you do....

Thanks for the insight Scott.  It was what I expected, but being relatively new to the sport I needed to ask anyways.

What muzzle FPE is needed to be able to have a chance in making the NUAH club?

Thanks Bob.  The nearest range with 100 yard lanes is about an hour+ drive.  So, I didnít want to waste my time if there was no chance at all.

Iíll keep a watch on the weather and see if I can find a window that might work. It would be fun to try.

I see a number of people getting sub MOA with .22. I am sub 2 MOA consistently with my Marauder, but sub MOA is pure luck for me above about 50 yards outdoors (in the wind). It's not the gun, it's the pellets and the flight of the pellet. They are just not there for .22, I can't imagine them being stable at longer ranges for .17. I would listen to the people who are shooting a lot in the field and doing the work. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just not seeing people do it consistently. Now at 30 yards and under. You can get .17 air rifles that will rule on paper.

NUAH isn't all about shooting sub MOA, it's about getting more people interested in seeing what they can achieve at 100 yards and beyond.... I have never achieved 1 MOA with an airgun, I'm a lowly "Expert" with my best group of about 1.3".... I think trying a .177 at 100 yards to qualify as a Member, and then see if you can progress to Marksman is not only do-able, but a worthy quest....

do not have much to add to what has been presented other than it could be better with heavy pellets and a 30 ish fpe .177...

then  there are .177 slugs now also... point is nowadays it is more possible than it was just 5 years ago... They started listening to the folks on the forums and realized they needed to keep up and start making heavier projectiles for small bores...
