Title: Practice/(Failed) Attempt
Post by: ER00z on April 05, 2022, 07:26:31 PM
I have been trying to get things sorted out to join in on the NUAH fun. My target post is set up at ~105 yards via range finder from my back deck. Things weren't looking good with the Gamo Magnum, so I "dusted off" my Diana 54 Air King in .22 (a springer) to take some practice shots. After I thought I had the wind figured out, it changed it's mind  ;D
(No windage flags up right now)

Currently using a white foam board as a backer, it's quickly filling up with holes, but only 5 shots were taken at the target per attempt. I'll have to come up with something a bit different as a backer.

Here's peek to the 54's performance... The wind quit and landed those 3 shots whare I was holding on the right  >:(  :P  ;D

(Also, a previous photo through the range finder, from my shooting position to the same post with foam board pinned to it)

Glad to see you here, Zack.... You'll figure it out, and have a blast doing it!....  8)

Thanks Bob! I'm looking forward to reaching out with a few of my springers.  Looking through previous matches, I see there's some solid performers and have my work cut out for me. Hoping this year will have a good turnout.

Take care

Still a no-go...

It's Friday night after a crazy week, the Misses is cooking supper and rain was on the way. I know it takes a few shots for the Diana 54 to "warm up" and then a few more for me. So in a rush, I fire off 5 at 50 yards hoping the gun and I will "be in tune" then the NUAH target called to me... "Hey, bet you can't get me..."

Well I made an attempt again (photo below), but we (The gun and I) just weren't ready yet. Seems the last two, aside from windage, showed we were ready to rock. As I was half way to the target to post a fresh one up, the rain started to come  :(

With any luck, this will be the week. Also looking to get something good for the 100 yard match. So hold on guys (and gals) the springers are coming...  ;D

You're right on track; for sure!  :D
Most of your groups just needed a bit of shifting to center on the bull; and you'd have made Member already!  8)

Thanks Jesse!

Getting weather to cooperate seems to be the biggest hurtle. Still figuring out wind drift with this pellet/gun combination. The gun setup isn't ideal for 100 yard shooting, but I think it holds it's own. Using an RWS drooper mount and a Pinty 4-16X40AO. Zero'd at 50 yards, as I'm almost out of adjustment any further and using the sixth 'mil-dot' down on 8 power to reach out to 100 yards. Other than the bipod and cheek raiser, the gun is box stock.

Honestly, shooting 100 yards with a pellet gun might be one of the more challenging things I've attempted, but it sure is fun.

Great job with a break barrel. Looks like you had 3 shots nearly touching. Awesome.

Thank you for the compliment  ;D

The D54 is no regular springer though, it's a side lever with a sledge system (the action moves within the stock, making it recoiless, for the most part). But truly appreciate the kind words. 100 yard shooting is very interesting, no matter the airgun (I just like a challenge, Lol).

So I got to goofing around this morning and decided to test a different gun at 100 yards. Its my Hatsan BT65QE Elite .177 (don't tell my springers I'm "cheating" with a PCP, Lol). This gun currently has the newer style valve, regulated (Hatsan unit) to ~100bar, some spring work (~15fpe with pellets, and 50-60 shots from 200bar to 100bar) and no more auto safety. Other than that, its all factory.

Using a Pinty "6-24"X50AO (not truly 6-24 power) I sighted in (one 'dash' hold under) NSA 12.5gr slugs at 30 yards. Haven't chronied these yet, but figure 700-750fps estimated.

(Side note)
With the full power (non regulated) cylinder, the 15gr NSA slugs were too "zippy" @ 1000fps +/-  :o

So, here's some shots with the BT65 on a used target. Same 105 yards, winds at 5-10mph from SE-E. Old shots marked with an X. Just wanted to see how NSA 12.5's would do... Two sighter shots fell below target left of center (circled), then a nice cluster of 5 shots in the 6-ring, and a few strays. Could be me, could be the regulator, wind, etc... But probably me. Lol

Springer guy shooting a PCP... ::)  :o  :P
(Kidding, I like all airguns!!! LOL)

That shows some real promise, Zack!
Hope you can get things sorted-as it looks like you could have an upgrade in no time!

Thank you (again  :D).

I was surprised those 12.5gr slugs did so well (with the current settings). The other cylinder has a slow leak I have to sort out, otherwise I'd swap it in and use the NSA 15gr slugs (The guns favorites, or so I thought)...

As is, I just have to adjust the elevation and a little windage and I'll give another go here in the next few days. That particular scope doesn't do that gun justice, but works well enough. I still prefer shooting springers for some strange reason  ;D

I also don't want to over work rsterne and Marty2 with multiple entries within a few days. (forgive me if that's the wrong handle/username).

I'm looking after the Membership and Matches this year, and I don't mind upgrading you.... However, all targets must be "clean", with only 5 holes, covered, crossed out, or not....

Thanks for reading through these posts.

That last target pictured above was just a practice session, and grabbed a used target to test at range. I wanted to ensure that it was clearly marked "void" down in the information area, so no confusion. But I fully understand using clean targets for official entries.

(Just some general ramblings...)
I had run into some issues dialing in that optic on the BT65 and weather around these parts hasn't been great. When time & decent weather are available, I'll give another attempt for an upgrade in a separate thread, going by the rules listed  :D

That BT65 has basically been an off-and-on project gun. It almost seems whomever designed it was a Star Wars fan, as it looks like something Darth Vader would use, Lol. But it does like those NSA slugs. I was just going through previous notes on it and running theoretical tunes/adjustments I may do, but first need a baseline chrony test with those NSA 12.5's. After that the goal will be to get velocity around 825-850fps and see how it does. I can actually see them dropping on target (for the most part), so they might not be up to the best velocity for stabilization currently. Too many "on paper" variables to rule out, just need to get hands on and dial it in  ;)

Wanted to test out the new Cayden on paper and see if I could shoot something worthy for the 100 yard match. Unfortunately, the wind had other ideas when I went out  :(   ;)  :D

I got this Umarex Origin .22 to do a budget long range airgun. It can shoot, but it's kind of finicky. Here's a list of odds and ends for the gun:

Optic: Burris Fullfield E1 4.5-14X42 (with MOA recticle)

FX No Limit Rings (to zero at 100+ yards)

Donnyfl muzzle adapter and Tanto (to center the barrel and collect dust  ;) )

"Custom Barrel Band" (electrical tape, AAA batteries between air cylinder and shroud with an O-ring on cylinder as a spacer, Lol)

And... Single load pellets (a tray is in route to make loading easier)

Using JSB 18gr pellets, this is how it shoots at 105 yards...
(Had a flier  >:( )

The four "not flier" group, "barrel band" and gun pic...

Was trying for the 100 yard match, but will try again on another calm day. I was trying to compensate for a ~3mph breeze coming at me and from the right some.
