Kevin, thanks.  Q. Is there a way that you can start October thru December on the first of each month and end on the last day of each month?  If there is a good reason for not doing so ( i.e., your work schedule or date conflicts) that’s fine but I have seen a couple requests for this so I was curious if it is possible. Regardless, as long as we get four consecutive weeks ( 28 days ), this is what we need.  Again, thanks for organizing this each month.

NUAH shooters - If I counted correctly we have around 33 days to get our cards submitted for the September match.  A little less than 5 weeks.  That should give us adequate time.  Good luck and have fun.

I just ordered a .25 over the weekend and if it arrives in time I'll be submitting a card for this match.  Good or bad, I'll send one.  I have to defend my last place record!!!  ;)

Tommy, Marty used to run the Matches every 4 weeks, and that is what we were attempting to do.... It gives eight matches between the beginning of April and the middle of November.... It also makes the match end on a Sunday, while running for 4 weeks.... something not possible if you run one each month....

Having said that, if most of the shooters would sooner have only 1 match per month, that is certainly possible.... The decision would have to be made to either run by the calendar month (ending on the last day of the month), or ending on the last Sunday night of the month.... That would mean that some months may not have 4 full weeks if they start on the 1st of the month....

I would suggest that you start a separate thread, with a poll, giving all the reasonable possibilities.... You could also ask when to begin and end the matches for the year, as in many areas it is not possible to shoot before April or much after October, certainly not in December through March....

Thanks Bob.

This is a very thorough clarification, which is very helpful.  The background and context was not previously understood or known to me, and perhaps by others also.

I think the main concern is to have more time (4 consecutive weeks ) for shooting and submitting the best monthly target.   Kevin gave us 33 days for September.  As long as this continues, this is optimum.

After reading this clarification, and if I see enough interest in changing the start and stop dates, I will run a poll in a separate thread.  Frankly, we have been getting such a small amount of participants that I don’t think polling the troops or changing to run the match on the first of the month and ending on the 4th Sunday or last day would increase the number of shooters.

I think having 4 weeks is what folks want.

+1 on running the poll. Why don't you make it run through the end of August, and we'll decide what to do for the rest of this year based on that, and then we can run another thread after this year finishes to decide what schedule to run for next year.

Fill your glass with your favorite beverage, pull up a chair, and I'll tell you a sad story.

The Shot That Broke My Heart.  After a long wait, I finally got the .22 barrel for my .25 FX Crown.  I haven’t had much time to work on it but did manage to get a quick tune on it and get it out to the range a couple of times.  I think I got lucky and got a decent barrel.  It seems to shoot pretty consistently.  I used it for the first time at a club match earlier this month and shot my best score ever on the 25 meter and 50 meter matches.  My 25 meter score was 740/750 25X.

I went out to our club’s Tuesday practice today, mainly to do some work on my .25 Maverick to redo the tune.  I took the Crown with me and since it wasn’t very windy and there were no powder burners on the 100 yard benches, I shot a couple of NUAH targets.  First target wasn’t bad but I had one round that just broke the 10 ring line, making it a 9, and the last round went into the center of the 9 ring making it a 48/50.  The second target was the magic one.  The first four shots went into the X ring (later measured at 0.337 “).  Just as I pulled the trigger on the fifth shot, a gust of wind pushed the pellet out of the X ring and up into the 10 ring.  It was all I could do to keep from purpling the air with four-letter adjectives.  I had that very illusive sub-half inch group within reach and let it slip through my fingers.  This did show me that this .22, shooting the JSB 18’s, has the potential of shooting some pretty good groups as long as the wind cooperates.  Of course, there is always the possibility that it could have been pure luck and I may never see anything even close to this again.

Either way, I wanted to share the experience, as I’m sure there are a number of you that have had the same thing happened and know exactly how I felt.  “Life can be so cruel at times”.   Lol.

Wow Mike, that is impressive. Especially with the 18 grain. I've never broke the  one inch barrier with a .22 cal in any grain so far.

Look forward to you busting the 50/50 5x barrier with that bad boy soon!

Oh, and that 25 meter score was mighty fine as well!

Holy moly Mike!  Wow!  It's shooting like this that made me decide to join the FX crowd.  Ordered mine over the weekend.

Good shooting Mike.  Everyone can relate to that one pellet in a five shot group that becomes a flier.  I do use wind flags for shooting 100 yard EBR practice targets, but not for NUAH.  No good reason as to why not???  I may start.

Q. Do you have the ability to use flags at your range?  I’m asking because it might help you identify a good wind condition as to when to shoot or not.

Regardless, keep at it and the X’s will keep coming.

Tom, I almost always use wind flags.  The exception is when I try to shoot a couple of quick 100 yard targets when the powder burners have left and I've already set up on the 50 yrd. bench.  If the 100 yrd. benches are empty when we first get there, there are usually a couple of us that will set up some flags and spend a little time shooting there.  Most of our practice shooting is at the 25 and 50 because that is what we shoot in competitions.  I'm still not very good at reading the wind but without the flags, I'd be all over the place.  I won't say there is never a non-windy day around here but it is very rare.  The wind at the range is almost always around 5 - 15 mph even on good days (if we're lucky it starts at 5 mph but by 9am its usually gusting 5-10 mph).  The burms on the left and right and baffles overhead cause some very strange variations in wind direction that leave you cussing when the flags tell you one thing but your pellet does somewhere else.  I shouldn't complain because other than the wind we have some pretty good ranges here at the Pioneer Gun Club.  The range is on 360 acres and I think we have around 10 shooting ranges, a static archery range, and a wooded walk-through archery range.  Here are some photos of the 100/200 yard range and the 25/50/75/100 yard range.  You can see the berms and the baffles I'm talking about.

That’s a nice range. Very professional looking.

I wish our pathway down range was grass and not gravel.  I’ll post a picture next time I go.  If I had to grade your range vs. mine; yours would get an ‘A’ and mine would get a C-!  And, that would be grading on a curve 😀😀

Those overhead baffles and shooting under a canopy will do interesting things to pellets with wind.

Q. Why are there overhead baffles and what are they used for at the range?

Here is a submission from my shooting range in the rain forests of north Mississippi!

dgwren
100 yards lasered
FX Maverick Sniper
Alpha 6 set on 20X
22 gr. FX Hybrid .22
Rested on bipod on bench with rear rice sock
250 with 3X--group is a little over 0.6"

As usual for August in Oxford, MS, it was hot and humid and almost still.  This was my third, and by far the best, card.  I'll be trying some more, because that group size would fit in the X if was moved over and up a little!! Hard not to try a few more...

FYI, I have the Maverick 2nd regulator at about 110 bar, and the hybrids are going out at around 950 fps.  I've tried several other slugs hoping to find a cheaper option than the FX Hybrids, but these shoot so well that I think end up saving money shooting them instead of continually tinkering with other slugs.  The Maverick shoots JSB 18.1s very well, too. I just turn the hammer spring down 3 clicks and do a little re-zeroing.

Great target.  Is this your first NUAH submission?

Looks like a 2X 50/50 card!   Wow.

Great shooting.

P.s. You have until September 19 to post your submission for September.  Only one NUAH card per month, so you have time.

Thanks for the kind words!  Do Xs have to be completely inside the center dot--without touching the next ring?

I don't know why I put "250" on my original post--I guess was excited about that group.  ;D  I don't see way to edit the post, but I'll fix it if you tell me how.

Yes, the hole needs to be entirely inside the X ring to count as an X.  You can edit using the ‘modify’ command after you post.

Thomas, sorry for the late reply.  I've been kind of busy with some remodeling projects.  The baffles are basically metal boxes, filled with large gravel, to stop any accidental high shots that would go over the backstop.  Even though we have a lot of acreages, we want to make sure no bullets make their way to the farm adjoining the range property.  Seems like from time to time there is someone that accidentally cranks a round off when the barrel is pointed too high so it's probably a good thing we have those baffles even though they do cause some real issues with the wind, especially for us air rifle shooters.

PS:  Very nice shooting Daniel.

Daniel, I wanted to ask you about your Maverick setup.  I just took the .25 barrel off my Crown and put a .22 barrel on it.  It's shooting pretty accurately and I haven't changed the reg from the way it was set for the .25 cal. which was around 140 bar.  I need to retune it and am thinking that a good starting point for the reg would be around 100 - 110 bar.  What speed are you shooting your JSB 18s at?  With the little testing I've done with the reg still set at 140 bar, I seem to be getting the best accuracy at around 900 fps.  I've got a Maverick Sniper too but it's a .25 and I'm still trying to find a decent tune for it.

140?  That seems pretty high.  My Impact MkII .25 was delivered set to 100 bar and I've tuned it down to 95 bar and am still shooting 34 grain pellets at 850 fps.  But I have to confess, I've only just gotten my Impact and tuning it seems like a black art to me.

I may not be able to shoot at 100 yards again before this match ends so I'm going to submit my targets now.  Since there are so few people submitting this year, I'm going to submit one for the .22 class and one for the .25 class.  The .22 is from the one I shot on the 17th that I posted earlier in this thread.  This is a .25 Crown that I put a new .22 barrel on.  The barrel is 600mm and I think it's called the Superior barrel.  I haven't changed the regulator setting yet from when it was wearing the .25 barrel so it's still set at 140 bar.  If I remember correctly the 18 gr. JSB's are coming out at around 900 fps with the TP set at .177/.22 and the power wheel at 3.  The wind as pretty low that day at around 4-6 mph and I think it was sunny.

Here's my entry for the .25 cal., shot at the McBride range at 100 yards.  Sunny, temp was around 85 degrees with a 4-8 mph wind.  The position was bench with front rest and rear bag.  Front reg set at 125 Bar and the rear reg at 100.  Power wheel set at 2 which is around 890 fps.  I don't think this 125/100 Bar setting is that great for the 25 grains and will have to do some more testing.  I was trying to set it up for a "Dual Tune" so I could also shoot the 34 grns at a decent speed.  At the current settings, I can get the 34 grns out at around 885 fps but the efficiency and probably the accuracy are suffering because it's a compromise tune for both pellet weights and not optimized for either one.

Wow Mike, awesome shooting!  Really shows what these FX's are capable of.  I still haven't figured out my Impact.  I did a rough and dirty tune for 34 and 25 grain pellets.  At "Max" the 34's shoot at about 850 and at "4" the 25's shoot at about 850.  But after asking around it sounds like the 34's should be shooting faster than that.  The Impact is so light and the buttstock so tiny it's hard for me to get a solid "fit" on my cheek and shoulder.  I've added a bag rider and may try adding some weight (a la "Rusbear") and see if I can get it to settle down some.  I know this rifle is capable of single hole accuracy at 100 yds (or very close to that) I just need to figure out how to get there.

I did shoot a fair amount of NUAH targets for the September match.  Probably 18 NUAH targets over three outings.  I had some good luck with the RAW and the Safari.   My submission will be the Safari target #7, dated August 19th for this month.  I will also post some of the other practice cards so you can see the difference between the two guns.

Shooting Date: 08/19/21
Shooter: Tom Boylan
Distance: Outdoor range; 100 yards lazer'd
Gun: Daystate RW Safari .22 HP
Optics: Sightron 10-50X60 MM; 2FP
Ammo: JSB 25g RDs
Wind: ENE; 1-4 mph
Group:50/50; 3X; .77" CTC
Position: Bench Rest seated; Rear Bag and Accu-Tac Bipod

Here is one of the best RAW targets out of about a dozen.  I have saved all of the RAW September practice cards, but I did not post them all.  If anyone is interested I will modify.  The RW Safari vs. RAW at 100 yards is almost a coin toss in terms of accuracy, but I think the Safari at 970 FPS shoots best on medium power.  The RAW is now dialed down from 950 to 935 FPS with the same pellet - JSB 25g RD.

Thanks guys!

The Safari is shooting very good!  Sent it back to AoA last week for a general service.  I have about 7-8K rounds through it now and I accidentally disconnected the positive wire from the GCU2 board so I sent it back under warranty.

There are some O-rings that need to be checked, so I figured I would get the action and barrel checked out as well.

Jeez.. I hope they don’t screw it up.  JK, their tech staff is great!

Nothing wrong with that at 105 yards.   That is excellent Paul!  You’re on your way.

The problem that all of us have is that Jimmy ( Fuss ) is shooting this month.  He’s sneaky,…. and waits until we all post early and then he posts his targets and cleans our clock!  Take a look at the 2019 matches from Jimmy! 😀😀😀

Jimmy - are you watching?

Haha, yes I have been guilty of posting late. I think I've got till the 19th to get a target in. Problem is, I haven't shot in months. Doubt I can hang with you fellas, but hope to get my lazy butt out there soon. If not, I'll make an early entry for the next match.

My hip has healed up nicely. I think I shot better when I had a bad hip though? I made those shots count so I wouldn't have to walk as much? LOL
Hope you're having the same luck with your knee Tom.

Buy some card stock for your targets.   Better holes and easier to see and measure.

I was using a old pellet trap with a clip and magnet first and then I put a stiff backer behind the target and it helped.

Thanks for the text and pic Tom. Ordered the Accu-Tac C-5 G2 last night for $379.05, but tax took it over the $400 mark. But at least got free shipping. They had ten left last time I checked. Wow, that's more money than I have tied up in all my eight Atlas clones combined! LOL   I gotta tighten up to hang with you guys! Would love to have a .22 M3 that could keep up with the Boss?

Carl, I use 80# card stock from a local printing company here in Burgaw and still staple them to cardboard backer. Comes in handy if you want to place pellets in the holes for a good comparison. Check out the pic.

Looks good Carl. I usually set out 3 or 4 cards attached to bullet traps to keep from walking so much. For instance when I use 4 bullet traps. I have one set for sighters only , use the other three for targets and possible best of the best . I probably shoot anywhere from 6 to 12 cards per session and hopefully one will be winner winner chicken dinner ;-)

I've got two Champions, and two Do All's ......The Champion is by far better but you will pay more for it. I managed to buy a used Champion and two Do All's locally for just $60 for all three, which is why I have so many.

I might add, they both handle my .30 Boss at 50yds or even 28yds quite well. Haven't got the first dent yet!

How are you mounting them to get them off the ground?  Right now I've driven a couple fence t-posts and secured some plywood between the two posts.  Do you think it would be possible to mount the Champion to a couple 2x4's?  Can I leave it outside in the weather?

I just sit mine on top of a barrel. I've got a board on top of the barrel to accommodate 3 traps. I leave em out in the weather. The three used ones had been left out in the weather when I got them. They could use a little sanding and painting I guess? The Do All's seem to flake paint worse than the Champion's. I have to turn them face down during the spring and summer because the Carolina Wrens love to build their nests in them?

In the pictures below, you will see five bullet traps the top row has a custom made trap in the middle to hold the larger Benchrest cards. The ones on each side of it are the Champion traps. The bottom row is the Do-All traps. They have rusted the most.

I love that our topic is active, but I'm dreading missing someone's submittal this match.  :o If I do, let me know.

For pellet trap, I use a piece of plate in the back of a milk carton. 12"x12" sticks in place perfectly. Then I put duct work stuff around to catch the lead. It may be real low tech, but at the time it cost me nothing, and knocked together (literally) in a few minutes once I gathered the parts. I think it will last forever. Search around, there are several topics outside this child board.

I guess I should have read what I copied from the previous years matches a little closer. It does say ongoing results. I had always figured on just posting the results after the submittal time was up.  I'll start adding results periodically during the matches when I'm at a real keyboard.

Is that the stock moderator that comes on the Boss? Looks like it is loooooooong.  I saw your post on GTA about the various bipod and rests used at RMAC.  I also liked Stoti’s setups.

Starting to think hard on the advantages of a good mechanical front rest vs. my Accu-Tac.  Why, you might ask?

Because I am noticing that more and more competition BR shooters are using them.  I have a Randolph front rest that I use for my custom Anschutz 1907 .22 LR and it does lock down the front and mid sections of the gun.

I noticed CC, and several others were using them at RMAC.  Coincidentally, they did well and their scores also reflect same.

But, 80% of others used Bipods, of which most were Accurate-Tacs.

Good idea but my Randolph does not seat well with the bottle guns.  Meaning…..I  can’t easily adjust for air rifles.

Might need an adapter but it would be a good test or comparison.

Yeah, I think there were 2 polls right? I voted in one but not the other. I think.
I voted for the 1st to the end of the month.
Anyway, looks like we have time for another target or 2.

That was my understanding, is that the poll, and its results, are for next year.... the poll was titled "for 2022"....

Yes and yes for 2022.  I inadvertently created two polls, which are essentially the same.  Should only be one poll and I will close as I think 30 days are about up.

FX Maverick Sniper .22
Aimsport Alpha 6
JSB 18.1
Bench+Bipod+Bag
50 4X 0.68”
Conditions were perfect! Super still.  I shot three targets and this one was definitely the best, although the others were all pretty good.

And, yes, the one outside the ‘X’ was the last shot.. :(

Way to go!

I'm sorry for the very delayed reply! I just noticed this post.  I'm running a little over 100 bar, according to my gauge, which is small and reads too high (planning to get a Sekhmet). So, maybe 95-100 bar.  It shoots the JSB 18.1 s at about 930 where I have the hammer spring set.  I've also tried 125 bar, and, although the Maverick still was pretty accurate, it seems happier around 100 bar.  FYI, I still haven't had much luck with any slugs except for the FX Hybrids.  I want to try a Superior Heavy barrel, but I can't seem to find one.  However, the way it has been shooting the JSBs, I should probably just stick to pellets.  The pellets won't be as fun when breezier fall conditions take over.

Darn!  You guys are getting better groups at 100 yds than I am at 50!  There is so much to learn about these FX's and with all my testing I'm running out of pellets! :P

Paul, I'm right there with ya buddy. I was in the same predicament for years until I got the FX Boss.

Back then,I had a few guns that could shoot much tighter at 50 than what we see at 100 now days, but once I tried them at 100 yds , I couldn't get much tighter than 1.25"

Amen.

If you really want to see some amazing groups, take a look at the three groups Mike N posted today at 100 yards over on AGN. Truly remarkable with his Thomas.  NET:  3 MOA groups; one 25 shot group and two ten shot groups.

Daniel,

Thanks for the information.  I’m surprised that you are shooting the 18’s at 930 fps. The .22’s I have, all seem to like the JSB 18’s at around 880-890 fps.  FX makes so many different barrels but I believe mine is an STX Superior barrel like yours except mine is a 600mm barrel and I think yours on the Maverick Sniper is 700mm.  That may be why your 700mm likes 930 fps.

Also, I think the October Match #7, started on October Sept. 20th but I don't see any information on it.  Am I not looking in the right place or has it not been put up yet?

Are you going to post match #7?  It’s October 5th and I don’t see it posted.

I was going to post my scores today but I don't see where we can post for the October match.  It ends in 10 days so I hope Kevin will put it up soon.

Gentlemen,
I apologize for my lack of attention to the boards. I’ve started a new job, which requires a great deal of time and attention. I’m just now getting my feet on the ground. Also the location of said job does not allow for access to GTA except through my phone. Couple that with some additional family and personal requirements in the evenings and weekends, my air rifle time has been wiped out. This should be under control now.
Mea culpa
Kevin
Thanks Bob
