Where can I go to find out if a particular species of bird is protected in my state?Specifically "Red Wing Blackbird"I know Robins and Cardinals are off limits here.... and I was raised to not shoot anything you don't eat.But the RWB's devastate my bird feeder. They literally shuck everything out onto the ground for no apparent reason. The pretty birds set below and eat off the ground. They aren't a song bird... all they say is "Purple Feeeeder".And nature gave them a perfect bulls-eye.
I have always liked the RWB. I don't get too many at the feeder, but some and they dont bother me. My nemesis and there is nothing i can or wiould do anything about it is either the downy or hairy woodpecker, (whichever is the smaller one). Wood peckers are protected and I like them, BUT at the bird feeder when I watch them through a scope, I can see that they are flinging seed EVERYWHERE! I'm not sure they actually eat any of the seed, i think they just like throwing my seed around. dumb birds
Redwing Blackbirds are more abundant in wetlands, Had them by the 100's on my 20 acre wetland property.
Sorry Eddie, all I got from that is the genus/ species.Agelaius phoeniceus
Scott, birds don't need people's help with food in the spring/summer. They can survive just fine without the bird feeders. You will also attract bears with summer bird feeders. It is recommended to only put out feeders in the winter time. If you do bird watching place a basin or bird bath outside and many different birds will show up, especially on hot days. We had birds show up for a bath or take a drink that we had never seen before or couldn't identify, or had not seen in many years.
