Title: 10 meter rifle
Post by: Tims229 on April 16, 2017, 01:48:37 AM
I'm looking to compete in the 10 meter matches here.  What is a good entry level 10 meter rifle for an adult.  I'd prefer it not be a springer as I have enough problems shooting offhand to add the need to hold correctly that springers seem to require. Not looking to spend a bunch of money either as it is just for playing around in the matches here at GTA.  I am thinking a .177 caliber is the right size also.  I do have a PRod carbine that I've thought about using, but not sure it's up to the task.

Thanks for all responses.

AR2078B @$200 and as you are in northwest Iowa, you're within easy driving distance of Burt, Iowa where MM resides and he can really make one sing.

Who is MM?  But yes Burt isn't far from me at all.

Heck I didn't even know that flyingdragon was here in Iowa.  Learned another new thing today.  Thanks!

You're welcome.  I'm just north of Cedar Falls and have a 100 yard range with a solid bench and lots of air for PCPs.  If you're ever in the area and want to shoot, let me know.

Larry, we need to get some matches going in our state!  I would love to get together and shoot sometime.  We could shoot each others guns to experience some different flavors.

Tim,

I'm willing and may have access to a private range with room for campers.  Only 150 yards max with backstops for powder burners but solid benches at 50, 75, 100, and 150 yards.   Also has a couple of shotgun trap ranges. Will have to check if a weekend meet is doable but would definitely like to do a get to gether with other airgun addicts here in Iowa.  If you're interested, will pursue, but should probably do so in another thread.

Agreed, maybe in the Iowa thread at the bottom?

Tim,

Got your email while composing this.  Let me check with the people who run the range and I'll start a new thread if its a go.  Will probably be the middle of week before I get a definite answer.  Until then should probably let this get back to your original question on 10M rifles.

Going to bed now.

I went with the AR2078-B as well. Imported by Beeman from SAG. http://www.airrifle-china.com/products_detail/productId=62.html (http://www.airrifle-china.com/products_detail/productId=62.html)
I actually took the time to call Mike ad FD and Beeman Service before buying mine and liked what I heard from them.
The "B" model is a side lever. Comes with a choked barrel and muzzle weight I am told the "A" no longer has.

Next choice would be a rebuilt Daisy Avanti 853 from CMP. But with the scuttlebutt here of Gamo freezing Avanti sales I am really concerned about their future. Might want to snag one up while you can.  ($105)

Depending on what you call "bunch of money" I'd think you are not going PCP and I know you said no "springers"
I have my sights set on my next one is going to be a rebuilt Feinwerkbau FWB 300S from Joe Rhea. (~$500)
They have two springs wound opposite directions, countering the torque felt in standard Spring piston designs.

Thanks Scott, good info right there.  I would prefer a choked barrel for a 10m rifle just so it isn't as pellet fussy if nothing else.

The Beeman Tech I spoke to actually had one himself.

Outstanding Scott and think Joe Rhea is a great choice for your transaction too.  ;D

Tim,

I think for fun you can't go wrong with the refurb CMP 853s.  At $115 shipped it's the best deal around for a lothar walther barrel match gun.

I just got one a few months back.  Even with the stock setup and trigger it's really nice shooting 10m gun.

I have a pcp FWB 700 Evolution also.  It's almost 20 times more the price but not 20 times more fun or accurate than the Avanti 853 from CMP..!

The CMP refurbished 853s has to be the deal of the century.
BUT, the LoP of the 853 is 12 inches, as it was designed as a junior rifle.  You need to use spacers or a slip over pad to extend the LoP.

The sights on the 853 are OK, but there is better.
But the next step up in sights will cost you about $125-200.
- You need to replace the muzzle weight with one with a sight grove (from the 753).
- Then buy the sights.  Pyramid lists 3 different sights that you can use:  Crossman/Gamo, Crossman, and Air Force.

If the sight line is too low, you can use riser blocks to raise the sights.
You cannot use riser blocks on the AR2078, as the front sight is fixed in place.

It is likely that the 853 has already had a trigger mod done to it.  If not, here is the link to it

I recommended the 853, but I forgot to ask what your budget is, and if you want a sportster or precision rifle.  The precision rifle gets more expensive, but the accuracy and quality of the rifles jump up.

I shoot both sportster and precision.
I shoot sportster for fun and casual target shooting.
I shoot precision when I am serious about getting a high score.

Thanks for all the input. Got some research ahead of me now to decide which way to go.

I don't shoot competition but have two FWB 300S Universals, two FWB 300S Juniors and a FWB 300 on the way. Why, because they are fun shooters and with the sliding sledge there's no kick that beats me up like my RWS 34.

I'm 70 and have Glaucoma, but still shoot a ragged hole at 10 meters and one hole at times. In addition to that, these fine shooters are GREAT out to 25 yards....what more can you ask for.

I have an FWB 300S universal with the high sight line.  Beautiful rifle and great shooter at 10m.  But be advised, it's heavy.  I have several CMP 853s with both Montecarlo and sporter stocks and they shoot almost as well as the FWB at 10m, and they're a whole lot lighter for extended shooting sessions.  In the FWB's favor is cocking effort with the side lever is much easier than with the 853, and it doesn't take you as far out of shooting position.  Definitely upgrade to 753 sights - it's worth the money.

Which stock style do you like better and why?  Thanks

I prefer the monte carlo stock over the sportster stock.
- The position of the trigger hand is more upright, allowing me to tuck my elbow in close to my side.  The sporster stock has my elbow floating out to the right of the rifle.
- My trigger finger pulls back toward my shoulder, vs upward with the sportster stock.

To take it 1 step further, I replaced the sporster stock of my 853 with the composite/plastic montecarlo stock of a 953.  The reason is weight.  The plastic montecarlo stock is significantly heavier than the wood stock, making the rifle sit better, and is easier to hold steady.

Thank you, I was leaning that way for the same reason, but a conformation helps tremendously.

The only thing is a composite/plastic 953 stock does not look anywhere near as nice as a nicely stained and finished wood stock.  But I guess you can paint it  :)

I had difficulty with the slippery buttstock of the Avanti 853.

To remedy this I got this rubber slip buttpad for under $12, medium size.  Much easier now to keep the gun on my shoulder.

Definitely the Montecarlo for 10m precision shooting.  For plinking I prefer the sporter with a cheap Tasco scope instead of the diopter sights.

I have the order form printed off to buy an 853, just have not sent it off yet.  Monte Carlo stock is what I'll be ordering.
