My 1995 RWS Diana 34

Fellow air gunners, I have a very nice RWS Diana 34 that I purchased in 1995, it is stamped 01 / 95. The gun is in very good shape, a safe queen most of her 26 years on the planet. I know very little about the gun but have tried to learn more with absolutely no luck online. Does anyone have any data / stats about this particular rifle?
Things I would want to know more about; FPS, best way to tame the "twang", where can I learn more? I ask because I really want a backyard friendly springer and am debating an R7. Before purchasing another gun ( I just bought a Gamo Urban and a Benjamin 392) I want to be sure that I am not overlooking the merits of what I have in hand.
Thanks very much in advance,
- Tom

Tom I can't tell you a lot about that particular rifle but I have a new 34 that I installed an ARH OS kit in recently, supposed to be a 12 or 13 FPE kit, I don't have a chronograph to tell you what it turned mine into but it did eliminate all the twang and now has a very nice shot cycle and is more backyard friendly. I also put a plastic piston liner in it but was probably not needed with this kit. I also have a HW30s that is definitely more backyard friendly not that I am trying to enable you.

Tom,
You came to the right place. I know nothing about early D34's, but other here do and will greatly inform you.
Why did you buy the Gamo and Benjamin?

The "happiest" way to detwang your gun is with a kit. I personally prefer the kits from Air Rifle Headquarters. The cheapest way seems to be (for me) to polish both ends of the spring and put some lube (moly lube or Krytox) on the spring. Pay special attention to the ends. I also like to make a piston sleeve. If you want the original specs on that gun it would take a catalog from that given year. The specs will probably say it's good for 1000 fps give or take but that's VERY optimistic.

Thanks everyone for your responses so far. Why did I buy the Benjamin - Irrational fear that if everyone can buy all the toilet paper, I want a self contained hunting rifle I can kill small game with. Why did I buy the Gamo? Seemed to be the best intro to PCP for me. I returned a Marauder when I realized it was a naval gun more than a backyard shooter. Why am I asking about the 34? I really want something a little more tame, that thing jumps like a rocket when you shoot it and the R7 seems to be in the sweet spot. I don't have an urge to kill squirrels but have the guns already if I get a nuisance animal. The 34 (or the R7) would be for targets in the yard / basement, the Gamo for PCP ease and the Benjamin for the doomsday situation and I need a reliable weapon. (Am I crazy?)

You control the speed by the spring; wire thickness, # of coils, materials, etc. A D34 can be slowed down if you wish, there are several different outfits selling kits tailored to specific needs. There are YouTube videos if you're a DIY person. Also, our GTA library has basic springer tune tutorial.

The 34 can be remarkably accurate. Off the bench I've taken a ground squirrel at forty yards with a head shot. It does take a bit of practice but the results are rewarding. Due to a shortage of ground squirrels I mostly kill paper.

I had a 34 I bought in 90 or 91. It was a.177 and I regret selling it to my son ever since. I remember getting around 780fps with a hn barracuda 10.65. can't comment on the loudness of the rifle as I have sometimers. I do remember it being very accurate. Head shot a ground squirrel at 90 paces. Probably more luck than skill but it sounds good 😁.

Tom, you may not realize it, but the Diana 34 is an classic icon in the airgun world. Just about everybody that collects airguns has one. You are in procession of a rifle that has ample power to take squirrel and rabbit at over 30 yard with little trouble thanks to the fine Mayer & Grammellspacher rifled barrel. Yes the .177 is a bit on the jumpy side for this model, but that can be smoothed out quite a bit with a tune kit, or sending it of for a professional tune that i would highly recommend. Once you shoot it after a tune, you will swear you are shooting a different air rifle. The 34 is a great platform and your vintage 34 will serve you for a very very long time. I doubt you will pick up that Gamo again.

I really appreciate all the insights I am getting here. TJK (those are my initials too!) I suspected someone would say something to that effect. I bought the rifle at a gun shop when I was a fairly new cop on the force all those years ago. I have treated it like a treasure as it was expensive (or was the gun store just expensive?). Roadworthy was dialing in on which model I might have and it sounds like the safety may dictate T01 vs T05. I can tell you that the "Diana" figure is etched or imprinted on the barrel / shroud. I have attached a photo of the safety to help determine which model I have. I do like to shoot her, and she is very accurate. Tempted to get a tune but need to research / learn more first.

Safety looks like a to1. They were curled steel strap. I believe the to5 and to6 have a plastic safety.

Stripminer,
I have a model 34 manufactured in 03 99 and has the same safety, as MADD Hatter indicates the trigger is a T01. The only advise I can contribute is if you perform the tune yourself is make sure you have two dummy pins to use when removing the factory pins, works best to tap these in while tapping factory pins out. The dummy pins should be shorter in length, just short enough to allow trigger block to slide out as you decompress the main spring (use of a spring compressor is recommended).
The reason for the shorter pins is to keep the internal safety springs on proper location which make reassembly much easier, I learned the hard way about short pin trick.
As indicated there are many options to pick from when it comes to springs and even tune kits and I have used both Air Rifle Headquarters and Vortek kits with much success. Good luck and let us know how it goes the Model 34 is a keeper in both .177 and .22 but I do prefer my .22 version a little more.

I think Mike melik does a full tune for $100 . He is at flying dragon air rifles in Iowa and he is good with the T01 triggers. He is a wonderful fellow.

As mentioned, yours appears to be a T01. I just sold a first generation .177 cal 34 that I tuned that didn't have
the fastened scope rail on top of the receiver. It was a May 1984 rifle which weren't as powerful as later
models. It was a 13-14 ft lb rifle whereas the newer T06 versions hit 16 ft lbs in .177cal.

The model 34 is one of the favorite air gun models, overall, over the past few decades. I have one that is close to the age of yours, VERY nice shooting gun! Some people will just keep shooting them to time and quiet them over time. and others will go ahead and send for a tune. Either way, your model 34 should be an excellent gun to have around, unless you just managed to get a lemon, and I don't recall reading about any of that model that had odd or unexpected problems. If you decide to sell it, I highly doubt you will have any trouble finding a buyer, but you might consider holding onto it for awhile longer and see if it becomes more of what you really want.
