Title: ***GTA Fun Shoot/Airgun Show 2015***
Post by: ezman604 on November 09, 2014, 11:12:59 AM
Check your calendars and make your plans to attend airgun history!!! The annual GTA Fun Shoot will be a little different this time. The site is Gallatin County KY Fairgrounds, thanks to Hargis Davis (CEO of the fairgrounds). We have set the dates of 15-16-17 May 2015. Below is a sneak peek at the layout. I'll be adding information as it becomes available. I have been in contact with all of our GTA vendors as well as several that are not members yet. This event should take our annual event OVER the top!!! I hope all of you can attend. It can only be as good as WE make it. Here is the message I sent out to our vendors.

Well, Joe, Rich and myself made a 12 hour round trip up to view the proposed site for the GTA Fun Shoot 2015. We were impressed with what Hargis Davis has to offer us. We honestly feel this could be one of the best events ever for the airgun community. Be advised, we are planning and we have the possibility to take this where WE want to. I will need all of your help to make this work for everyone. I wanted to give you a sneak peek at this. What I would need from you is an idea if you are interested and possibly will attend the event. Please vote in the poll above to help us get a rough head count. We are gathering as always, to have fun, see old friends and shoot/swap/buy/sell airguns. But I see this venue and event in my mind as an annual airgun show also. A place to highlight our vendor products and let the airgun community meet and greet them. Please keep in mind a few things as you view these pictures. This is a relatively new fairgrounds. It is a work in progress. Hargis has grants from the NRA and the parks department to finish the shooting facilities WELL before our event. It is also off season and certain parts are a bit grown up. He has assured us this is no problem at all. This is the smallest county in KY and he has connections/family/friends in all departments of local government to get anything he needs at a moments notice.
First off, we looked at the calendar and decided on the dates of 15-16-17 May 2015 for the event. We tried to pick a date when the weather was not too hot or cold and did not coincide with the annual NRA event nor the large Arkansas airgun show. And did not fall on Mother's Day either, like last year. :)
The location is the Gallatin County KY Fairgrounds outside Glenco, KY. We feel it is more centrally located and should be accessible to a larger number of our members, vendors and the general public.
https://gallatin.ca.uky.edu/CountyFair (https://gallatin.ca.uky.edu/CountyFair)
See it on Google Maps here...https://www.google.com/maps/search/Gallatin+County+KY+Fairgrounds/@38.7607755,-84.8418065,11z/data= (https://www.google.com/maps/search/Gallatin+County+KY+Fairgrounds/@38.7607755,-84.8418065,11z/data=)!3m1!4b1

There are 22 full RV connection spots with city water, electricity and a dumping station. One of the first things I need to know after you decide to come, is if you will require one of these 22 spots. I'll reserve on a first ask basis.

There are spots for camping also if our members want to pitch a tent. Campfires are welcome and Hargis may supply wood for those. If he doesn't bring in a truck load, folks will be responsible for their own wood. Only stipulations are the wood must be bought locally and pits dug but filled back in before leaving. Not a lot to ask, in my opinion. I could enjoy sitting around a campfire and chatting in the evening myself.
There is a new concession area that is temperature controlled and has a full commercial kitchen, nice bathrooms and the ability to seat 75.

Our vision is to let you our vendors have first dibs on setting up inside this area. There ARE two more locations we can and probably will use for setting up vendors and displays. There is a pavilion that also has temperature controlled space as well as two trailers that are for displays. The pavilion is in the middle left of this picture.

The pavilion area is away from the main area and may work to an advantage to getting folks to mill around and walk around to different areas. Will just have to see about the layout as requests for space come in.
These trailers below are just in front of the 15 place firing line that is being constructed. So some vendors may prefer to hang a banner there and be close to the action with your wares!!!
Another thought is to let our members that are also craftsmen, set up a table to sell their items. Thoughts on that? Could be our way of supporting the many skilled members we have and help them along the way if they decide to become official vendors.

This is the area where a 15 place covered range will be situated.

The firing line will be covered 60' across by 14' deep. With shooting benches. There will also be NRA certified instructors/local LE personnel as range safety officers all over the premises. And also, armed security throughout the event, just in case.

I have spoken with Crosman and their shooting event coordinator (Mark DeBoard) and he has assured me they will attend. Our plans are for Crosman to have this shooting lane to use as a FT clinic and allow folks to shoot airguns they have only seen or heard about. And to introduce folks to FT shooting. We can rotate different groups through this part of the course throughout the event and also allow other vendors/manufacturers to use the course for a similar clinic or friendly competition.

The main FUN firing line will be directly behind the concession area.

This area will be under Army surplus mess tents to have a covered firing line. The line will be approximately 100' in length by as long as we need for targets. Targets will be set up at ranges from 10 meters to possibly 200 yards. One idea we are tossing out is a 200 yard competition. And yes, big bores are allowed and welcome. But an idea we are tossing around is a steel plate at 200 yards, or a bell. Ring it with one shot and win $10. :)
We are also planning, thanks to Hargis, a poker shoot. Possibly 10 rounds with $100 prize per round winner. Hargis has volunteered $1000 prize money to boost a shooting competition. Oh, I failed to mention Hargis is an AVID shooter. In fact, this facility will host the national black powder association tournament.
We will also have a 10m to 100 yard covered area under this barn.

This can be used for demos or some type of shooting competition also. ALL areas will be monitored and scheduled for safety purposes. One area may be shut down and off limits while another is in use. But we envision rotating folks through events they may be interested in, sorta like a fair.
We also have one other lane we can set up for whatever we want. It is set at the moment for dirt drag racing. Hard to see the whole thing, but far left of the picture.

A few other things that will help make this a great event. Hargis will have concessions going all the time. With the possible exception of breakfast. IF enough participants want breakfast, they will cook for that also. Prices are VERY reasonable. We will put together a menu and an entire event itinerary/information packet as we move along in the planning. The Fun Shoot always has at least one meal the forum supplies. That is generally the Saturday lunch meal. Hargis has agreed to have his folks prepare this meal but we supply the food. I am tossing the idea around of bringing my smoker and doing Boston Butts again. The last time I did them.....WOW they were good if I do say so myself. LOL
But hey, I just put them in the smoker, fired it up, dropped my hickory in the back and walked away. Even with my messing with it the food was still great.
Within 17 miles there are tons of hotels and restaurants of all types. Hargis is getting a discount code for us from the Ramada Inn less than 10 miles away at exit 44 on I-71. I'll post that as soon as he gets it to me. But he says he can get several hotels to give a discount for the fairground events, not a problem. So, there is plenty of eats and sleeps within a 17 miles radius.
The KY Speedway is just down the highway.
Within 15 miles in Indiana is a resort/casino. My wife and I plan on making a one day trip there also. :)
We get to visit a casino once every 5 or so years. I just like to visit other places just to see and say I've been there. I'm not a big gambler and never win anything significant anyway.

So, I would like you to check your calendars and please get back with me as soon as you can with your thoughts and commitment. I need to know if you would want to help make airgun history and help bring the airgun community together for Fun Shoot/Airgun Show 2015. I hope this will take off and be the event everyone will be talking about and making plans for the following year.
Oh, before closing, one last bit of info.
Hargis has UAV aircraft and makes videos. He has shot some of the fairgrounds and it's posted on YouTube. His wife, who is also an executive of the fairgrounds committee, runs a video service. Hargis has agreed to video the event and even has the capability and desire to live stream it. Wow...
And has connections with and will invite all of the local media to come out to the event. This will give a LOT of exposure to any vendor that attends. And the beauty of this event is Hargis has agreed to do this at no cost to GTA. He is just that involved in promoting the fairgrounds and shooting events. So you can all see this event has great potential. But it will not be the event we envision without YOUR help. Please make plans and let's take this event off the charts!!!!
We will have several airgun vendors and hopefully Crosman, Air Venturi and Pyramyd Air. I have also received confirmation from several of out GTA vendors that would not miss this event.
Thanks all and hope to see you at the GTA Fun Shoot/Airgun Show 2015!!!!

Man, that has to be one of the finest areas for a Fun-Shoot Event, not to mention the facilities. Happens to fall on the weekend of my 21rst b-day ::), Pretty sure I can convince the Wife to let me go.

I agree, with a location like that, this could grow or become the premiere Air-Gunning Fun-Shoot Event. :D

Great job to those that made this location accessible for the annual GTA Fun-Shoot, Thanks!

Respectfully,

Al.

Looking forward to this...I have not been to one before.
Not to jump the gun or seem impatient...but, whenever possible, please post an itinerary of events, and rules for all of the shooting events.
Thanks

This looks like a really nice idea and nice event.

I hope that e-mail reminders are sent out prior to the event as I never know what my schedule might be.

I have penciled this in for me and my son-in-law .... only 5 hour drive for me, lots of hotels, Cinnci close by, restaurants, etc.  Unless something unexpected turns up .... I expect t be their.  Sounds great, and this would be my first fun shoot attendance.  Looking forward to putting a face to the GTA members attending.

Dave & GTA Team responsible for all the logistics .... Thank you!

This event sounds awesome. The NC shoot was too far but this is only 6 hours away. Me and my wife will do everything we can to get there. I definitely don't want to miss it and she's already on board.
Looks like a perfect wide open area for it and nice amenities too.

I would like to add a note of thanks to those that offered areas for us to consider. And there were a few. MANY thanks for the offers, I have your names and locations written down. This one is just a bit more centrally located. We will see how this event goes before making plans for future events. We may revisit your offers.

FYI... The first Saturday in May is the Running of the Kentucky Derby. Hotels might get booked pretty fast. This shoot and Churchill Downs are only an hour apart. Book your stay early and as far from Louisville as you can. Another money saver would be "DO NOT" buy your gas here in Louisville if your passing through.... We pay 20-30 cents more per gallon here than surrounding Counties. Get yours outside of Louisville and save $.  8)

Dave and Everyone who needs to talk the "Mrs." into the trip.....
This is a fine location with shopping trips within 1/2 hour to both Louisville and Cinnci.  The beauty in this is that it is "Derby Weekend" in Louisville....NO large crowds.   Closer to y'all (Shelbyville), is a big antique mall and flea market.
Cinnci has some major outlets and a BassProShops in the same place etc...as well as the same setup, just across the river north from Louisville.  An easy Drop off the Gals and "See Ya in a Couple Hours" Deal ! ;)

Secondly, and really close by...you are just a few miles from the little city of Carrolton.   The "General Butler State Park" is a great one.  The lodge and restaurant is very warm and nice to sit and enjoy the daily buffets, or a warm cup at the table.
Sit and look out the window to watch the treetops and look down on the Ohio River!   Theres also a few small shops to visit.  I'm sure they'll luv to see a group of Gals come visit them!
Anyway Guys...anything to make it better for you guys.  She won't regret it.  ;)

Mike, thanks for the info. As for me, there's no problem. Although she has not been afflicted with the same airgun sickness as me, she travels with me so I need no excuses. BUT, good point. She may want to skip out for a while to shop. Uh oh....there goes my pay check. LOL
It's definitely an area with lots of things to do, places to see, stay and eat. I think a REALLY good location. We will see.
Word of warning, when traveling the highways and interstates around there, BE VERY AWARE of the deer. We counted almost one traffic victim every other mile. I bet the insurance companies and body shops in the area do a great business.

It's a great job you ALL have done to coordinate the date, and travel routes, with the Vendors in the industry.
Thanks for taking the PM time, and insight of the considerations you had to go thru.
Everybody...   This area is sure to please you all!!!!  Come See ;)

We try hard but there ALWAYS seems to be a conflict with SOMETHING in the area. Last year at Belton, we were scheduled not only during Mother's Day (I take blame for that) but USC graduation in Anderson. Hotels were booked solid...and there are several hotel/motels there.

Ya don't need to go all the way to Cinnci to shop. Florence has MILES of places to shop without crossing into Sin City.
Right off of 75 even!
I can't remember how many stores we've done work in there over the years but it's a bunch!
 :D

Seeing as it's only about a 3 hour trip from home? I'm planning to be there work permitting.

Being where the fun shoot is taking place and the KY derby festivities. I don't see the two getting in the way of each other really. The tourists that weekend mostly come for the Horses. Other than hotels, shouldn't really be a problem. One thing you all might consider is moving the dates out a week.... If that can be done it would open things a lot of closer to places without the derby crowd. JMO

In Shelbyville they just opened up a brand new Outlet mall... The ladies will love this place!!
There's the Louisville Slugger Bat Factory that does tours daily.
There's also the Summit and Nortons Commons, Located 20 mins away off of Interstate 71. Dining, Hotels and More shopping for the ladies. The derby crowd will be there for sure.

Okay...we need input. I want to set the date and leave it.
:)
The NRA Annual Meeting and Events is slated for 10-12 Apr 2015.
The Arkansas Airgun Show in Malvern, AR is scheduled for 25-26 Apr 2015.
So...I say we set the date for GTA Fun Shoot/Airgun Show 2015 for 15-16-17 May 2015.
Anybody know of a reason NOT to have it then?
Some folks, including me, need to get vacation planned well ahead of time.
Let me know any problems we may have with these dates. I'm awaiting word from Hargis is this is okay with him.

The good thing here is you all have done your homework in a timely manner. The place you picked will be great for this event. You all have planned ahead far enough to give those like me time to get my Vacation in. I have to turn my time in by December 15th for all my vacation time for next year. I know for a fact this state goes nuts over a 2 minute horse race. By moving the dates to the 15-16-17th you will have better weather for sure (I've seen it snow a few times on derby day in the past) You will be able to stay a lot closer to the fun shoot for a lot less $. 30-50% savings there alone. Hotels within a 150 mile radius of Louisville raise there prices and the closer you stay the more you pay cause of the derby. Gas will be a lot cheaper and your not dealing with the Derby crowd. There's a ton of fun stuff to do in and around Louisville and Southern Indiana. Your stay will be a lot more enjoyable not dealing with the derby crowd.... JMO

Either date you all pick, I'm planning on going..... Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise  8)

Either date works for me.  The later date probably will work better for those needing to not miss more than 1 workday?  For those driving 5 or more hours, I would hate to have to do that after a long day of fun.  Personally, I would stay another night, then drive back.  I can set my own schedule, and vacations, but I understand that is out of the question for many.

Excellent point Tim, anyone CAN book early. There's nothing going on that week. Matter of fact, we may need help setting up and tearing down. All help from our family members is appreciated. After all, it IS the GTA Fun Shoot event. I personally will arrive Tuesday and start going over the setup. Come on out early. And Sunday 17th there is generally not a lot of folks still there but....
There will be some of us hangers on to help pick up anything needed. And maybe to get in a few rounds before hitting the road.

For anyone who lives in Texas, who might be interested in a joint trip for sharing gas expenses, let me know. If it's less expensive to fly, I'll do that, but depending on gas prices, it might be worth the drive, especially going with someone else.

Great point Lizzie.   Flights to Cinncinati (actually it's in KY), can be cheap if you book early.  Same deal goes with Louisville.  Either way, you're gonna have the show site close by, via I-71.

15-16-17 is firm!!!
Make your plans and reservations. However, Hargis is getting discount codes for us and I should have those soon if you want to hold off a little bit.
Also, I have checked on getting either the local fire and rescue or dive shop to bring their portable setup to do recharges. Waiting to hear back from that too.

Poll is going slow or what?  Got my motel reservations at the Sparda Ramada, just changed them from the 1st thru the 3rd to the 14th. thru the 17th.  With as many members as GTA has would have thought the poll numbers would be higher!  Come on people it's in the SPRING!  Time to get out after a long cold winter and have some FUN! ;D I hope that after I drive 450 + miles I can get to meet a lot more of you all.  More like 500 to 1000!!!  Hope I see poll numbers go WAY UP.  It will be the place to be so lets get there!  ;D

both of theses cities are small. Go to the east side of Louisville for more options for Hotels, dining and shopping. Just more to do in general. Try the summit or Norton commons area. Shelbyville, Ky is another place to look at if you like to see some Horse farms. Oh yea for those who like a drink or two.... Your in the heart of the bourbon trail...  8)

No showers on premises. I will check to see if a portable will be made available. Otherwise, there is a large truck stop just a couple of miles from the event. And they have excellent meals there too.

John, which hotel is offering 20% off and what is the room rate with discount? I just got off the phone with Hargis, the fairgrounds manager, who is calling Ramada Inn and a couple of others to see if he can get more than the fairgrounds standard 10% off. :)
It will really depend on how many we can firm up most likely to get the best rate.
Also, he says there are several private airstrips (some just grass patches) in the local area. He asked what type and model of aircraft and he will contact the owners to get permission for use of their landing strips. :)
Portable showers were VERY expensive so we won't have those onsite. The RV hookups are full service hookups though. And again, there is a NICE truck stop with showers just down the road for you campers.
THIS will be an excellent event.
Heavy equipment is coming in next week to start the NRA approved covered firing line. That is where Crosman/Pyramyd Air will be holding the FT clinic.
Stay tuned, I'll post more as soon as possible!!!!

OKAY...good info here.
Hargis just contacted me and said if you book at the Sparta Ramada (which has a restaurant and pool) give them code "GTA". That will get you a two queen bed room for $69!!!
You have to call them to get this rate, you can't do it online.

I will note, i found a Paintball shop roughly 15 minute drive.  I will donate the use of (hopefully i'll get it back) the male/male foster adapter i have, so that MOST folks will be able to fill to 3000 or 4500 psi from a paintball shop, you WILL need to take your full setup (scuba tanks will need the full fill station to have your tank filled).  IF the shop is willing, maybe we can do a bulk buy in, pay a single fee, and for the duration of a few days, we can just go top off for nothing?  DEZ want me to try and square something like this with them?  They might enjoy the "show time" they get... post up a banner for them or something?

Also looking for suggestions or donations for targets for the Fun Shoot. I can build some stands but we need target ideas for the new venue.
We are used to having a lot of trees to hang reactive targets from and just plinking away from 20-80 yards. This year the range is virtually flat and open. I have some spinners and knockdowns I will bring but these are only good for .177 & .22 low to mid power. Any high power or .25 and above will most likely destroy them.
I have some and can buy more Shoot-N-C targets and I can make some 2x12 target stands. These are also set up with foam balls on dowels that make good reactives too. The boards are also drilled for golf tees. For our springer/PCP competition shooting.
Any ideas and contributions would be great. I'm also pondering the firing line setup. I'm thinking a rotating line so everyone can get a chance at the variety of targets. We can reserve an area for homesteaders too. Those that have their own targets they prefer and aren't interested in rotating through the targets.
It's YOUR event, I'm just the arranger. LOL
Ya'll throw your ideas and target ideas/donations and I'll run with them.
We do have planned a poker shoot and Hargis will be offering up cash prizes for the winners. We are also trying to plan a long distance (100-200 yard) competition. Will see how that pans out.
Would also ask for any new items you folks would like to donate to the event for door prizes/raffle items. Anything and everything shooting related accepted and appreciated.

I am one that plans to bring my own targets, so an area where I can set them up to shoot would be nice.  My only question will be if I leave them overnight or pack them up when I am ready to stop for the day.

Post by: ezman604 on March 24, 2015, 10:14:43 AM
We will have security there so leaving them should be no problem. We also have some camping onsite, like at Gene's. Some in RV's also. So I think we will be covered as far as security. But if you are more comfortable packing up in the evenings, that is kewl too. We will probably have room in the concession building to temporarily stash stuff. I MAY also pull an enclosed trailer, not certain if I need to yet. If I do, it can be used as locked overnight storage.

That is nice. Have one here in Ventura, county Ca. We have the Ojhi Valley gun club range not to far from here where they hosted the 1984 Olympic shooting. They have a lot of area for RV parking. They have a 200 yard range. Move over alittle and they have a 600 yard range. I know it will never happen, but it sure beats driving back east, for us on the left cost any way.  ;) ;)

Yep Marty, our event is always in May and usually around the middle of the month. We just dodge other events like Mother's Day and other gun related annual events.
Wish you could be there. Maybe next year.

I just spoke with Hargis Davis, the owner/operator of the fair grounds.  Wow, what a great guy!  I can say with authority that we the GTA  and all others that are attending are in for a first class treat.  Hargis is a shooting enthusiast of all disciplines and he knows what shooters want and need when participating in an event like the GTA fun shoot.  Congratulations DEz on landing this venue!

If your are on the fence or your plans can be cancelled and reworked I highly recommend you attend this event.  Be there! I will :)

Yep, Hargis is one outstanding guy. We chat once or twice a week now going over the event. We both feed off each other and keep each other stoked about the event. It really is going to be monumental and lay the groundwork for even better things to come. VERY exciting times.
Today we discussed the shooting competitions and the prize money. Yes, prize money. He is not only giving us the entire facility at no cost this year but also putting up $1000 total in prize funds. What we are thinking of doing is a poker shoot. We will have 10 rounds with $100 to the winner of each round. We will also have our usual springer/PCP paintball competition with trophies and prizes for the top two of each category.
Now, with the increased interest in big bore, we are adding another new competition. Let's face it, we weren't too comfortable shooting big bores at Gene's. We COULD but we only had like 75 yards and the noise MAY have be cause for more blue uniform visits. We had permits but...
Anyway, the thoughts are a 100 yard steel plate. One shot instant elimination for big bores. That's anything over .257 cal. Trophies and maybe prizes like gift certificates or cash. Will have to see on this one. But you can count on us having more events and more prizes to offer than ever before. This is because we are growing and because of YOUR support!!!
Hargis will also be holding a training class for range safety officers Friday 16th. If you attend, you can become a certified NRA range safety officer. NEAT!!!
And speaking of range safety, we will be following all range safety rules and ask that you abide by those rules to keep this a safe and fun event. We will have local LE folks there as range safety folks as well as EMS (and hope we don't need them). We want to have fun but safely!!!
I have talked with him about the Saturday meal. His crew will be serving up food (you can purchase) throughout the event. He says folks come from all around for his burgers. So we are in for a treat. We generally have a meal Saturday lunch time furnished by GTA. I plan on smoking 5-6 Boston Butts there and having them fresh with all the fixins. His folks will serve it up but for the most part, it's a throw it on the table and you shuffle through and serve yourself type deal. We're still working out the details but this is what I am planning.
LOTS of raffle items, T-shirts & caps for you to purchase to show your GTA pride and help support your forum. Actually we aren't making much on these items, it's really just to get the merchandise out to you.
Throughout the event, please purchase raffle tickets. THOSE do bring in funds to pay for the event and keep the forum going. At any time, we will gladly accept donations also. Please see me if you feel a desire to do so. It will be GREATLY appreciated and used appropriately!!! We may purchase a "Thank you" gift for Hargis to not only show our appreciation for ALL he is doing for us but to butter him up for next year in hopes he will want to do it again. LOL
Also please keep in mind this event is larger than in the past and takes a lot of coordination. We can use help in many areas like ticket sales, target setup and just all kinds of things. Please volunteer a little time to help so all of us can have SOME time to shoot and enjoy the event. I know I would greatly appreciate it since I wind up working most of the time and get very little trigger time. I don't mind at all, I'd rather see you enjoy yourself. But I wanted to toss that out for you. Besides, Teresa told me to say that. And I gotta do what the boss says. LOL
The vendor list is growing. I'm excited that Tom is coming and brining the .357 Slayer to show off. Several vendors are bringing airguns and related equipment to offer up for sale. Bring plenty of cash, I expect to see some really good bargains.
If you craftsmen and women wish to bring your personally made items to sell, please do!!! This is your chance to shine. Also please bring any airguns, pieces/parts or airgun related items to sell or trade. We encourage it and I actually look forward to wheeler dealer bartering. :)
I hope to get a little time to build some of my folding gun racks and bring to sell. Will see though, I am booked pretty solid and have very little time for my projects these days. Making those is therapy for me!!! Will see, I hope to bring a few.
Anyway, as Tom said, if at all possible, COME ON OUT. I guarantee you will enjoy it!!!
And I'm looking forward to seeing my buddies from years past. And to shake the hands and put a face to those of you I haven't met in person before. It's a Fun Shoot/Airgun Show, but it's mainly a GTA family reunion as any of the long time attendees will tell you.
Safe travels and hope to see you there!!!

Appreciate that. I have a few reactive spinners I have purchased too. We most likely will need to separate the line by either caliber or power rating. Many of these targets cannot take magnum airguns and .25 or higher caliber.

;D Let me check around with some of the boiler guys I know . When I had my Oil company we would install tankless coils in new boilers and keep the blanks for rifle and pistol targets. At 50 yards my 7mm magnum would not punch through the plate. so I would think they would stand up to pellet rifle ammo with no ill effects.

I'm glad there was someone close that was willing to come out. I'll be bringing my Omega compressor but really don't think it would support the entire event. But just to let folks see it and maybe charge a bottle or two so everyone interested can see it in operation. But I certainly hope the scuba shop does not change their mind, we will need air refills.

Since we have sorta renamed the event the GTA Fun Shoot/Airgun Show, I say let's make that name mean just that.
What I mean is I know we will have vendors and members bringing airguns to sell or trade. But also bring those you just want to display and tell the story of. I plan on bringing several that Gene either built, owned or worked his magic on. These will be for display and to share the story of. If you are like me, many of your airguns DO come with a story of some type. Mine are coming to be seen but they are all shooters also. Don't hesitate to ask to get behind the trigger.
So, let's make the event a story telling time and to honor Gene. If you have an airgun with some Bawanah Gene story attached, please bring them and share with us all. And an FYI, Cathy has plans to attend and set up a table of CDT triggers and maybe some GRS bushings and breech washers. And if he can handle the trip, we may even have Bob (CDT) there also. Last time I spoke to him he WANTED to make the trip.
See you folks there shortly.

Is there a schedule for the event?  Trying to make plans for travelling 12 hours each way.  Will events be over by noon on Sunday??  People out shooting and trading 9A on Thursday??

I know many folks are unfamiliar with the GTA annual Fun Shoot and what takes place. It is more or less NOT a formal event and is more like a family reunion. If you invited some friends over to enjoy some shooting, would you have a schedule of events? I don't think so.
This year we are at a new venue. So we are TRYING to be a little more organized with some events to keep it interesting. But please keep in mind the whole purpose Gene and Bob put these together in the first place. It's for the GTA family to come together and just enjoy meeting for the first time, reuniting after previous years and just enjoying the fellowship. Since the venue is so different this year, we have decided to make it the Fun Shoot/Airgun Show. We hope to grow it into THE airgun event of the year.
The Fun Shoot is generally Friday through Sunday. Teresa and I and some of your forum staff will start arriving Tuesday to get with Hargis and the fairgrounds crew to finalize the plans and iron out any issues. Folks can show up any time from Wednesday on. If we have the line set up, which we most likely will, anyone is free to start shooting, helping set up, displaying, trading, buying or whatever as soon as you want. Friday is generally the meet and greet day along with shooting every target n sight. :)
Saturday is generally the main day for the event. We will have our friendly and fun shooting competition. This has normally been paintballs at 25 yards for springers and 50 yards for PCP. One shot instant elimination utill we get to a first and second place shooter. This year we will also have a big bore competition. We're still debating the range for this but it too will be a one shot instant elimination competition. We will have trophies for first and second place along with nice gift certificates from Pyramyd Air. So bring your best shooters and practice. :)
We are also planning a airgun poker shoot. Hargis and the fairgrounds folks are donating $1000 in cash prizes. We envision having 10 rounds with $100 for each winner of the round. This is something we have never done and it was the idea of Hargis to do. I think it will be great.
Saturday is also traditionally the day GTA feeds the family. I plan on smoking some Boston Butt and providing all of the fixin's for this lunch meal. This comes from your support of your forum, a way to give back what you and our vendors have generously donated throughout the year.
Sunday is GENERALLY a day of cleanup, saying our goodbyes and doing any last minute trades/sales/purchases. I'm certain if you wish, you can still do some shooting.
This year we also want to dedicate this Fun Shoot to Gene. It will be the memorial for us to honor him and his vision for GTA Forums. As I asked before, please bring any airguns that Bawanah Gene has massaged and share your stories.
I hope this answers some of your concerns. I will be getting with Hargis this week to try and organize a bit more and try to come up with actual times for events. But again, keep in mind this is not a formal event. It is just a Fun Shoot GTA family reunion that just happens to be a lot of fun!!!

A question or three for we who plan to bring targets.

I have several rest targets and a support to hang paper targets on for me to shoot at.

Will there be a place where we who are bringing things to shoot at to set them up and leave them overnight, or will we need to tear them down each evening since shooting lanes will be limited ?

While I wont mind someone shooting at my targets when I am away, I would like to be able to claim the spot (like we did at Gene's) and start shooting at them when I return.

Will this be possible or is a teardown and setup the next morning what will need to be done ?

I know they wont have 100 lanes (or don't think so), however will there be enough for locations to be claimed, even if they are not in the covered shooting area ?

If uncovered I take it we should bring our own cover to set up, again similar to how it was done at Gene's ?

I am just trying to get an idea what to bring with me and what I might expect as far as having some place to call mine where my targets can sit out overnight.

If this cannot happen, I will still attend though will leave quite a bit at home.

Thanks,

Geoffrey, it's really difficult to give you a 100% solid answer. This is an entirely new venue for us. We just have to see how things lay out. BUT, imagine two LARGE military mess tents. These will be butted together. That will be the length of the fun shoot firing line, the covered part anyway. Folks may bring their own pop-ups as previously and there may be room to add them. The firing line area is rather large. I would speculate that you can get there, pick a spot and homestead. But we also need targets for ALL to shoot. The reusables I am bringing I do not foresee taking back home. LOL
But I'm thinking we need to set these type of targets up in lanes either by caliber or power rating. Some of these just cannot handle magnum airguns or anything over .22 caliber. I'm sure we will have some targets that will handle .25 and big bore. But, my rambling is to say we may have to sort the firing line. But again, if you get there and claim a spot, you should be good to go for the duration. but we have to see how many folks show and how many the firing line CAN accommodate at one time.
With the size of these tents, I would say our firing line should be almost double what we had at Gene's. So it's best to bring too much Geoffrey, instead of not enough.
:)
You might want to bring some caution tape or something to mark your area off at the end of the day to possibly prevent anyone from grabbing it the next morning.

;D IDK these kids today, way back in the dark ages before cell phones and GPS we found our way to almost anywhere and all it took was a decent gas station map (free in most stations or perhaps $0.10 ) and a boy scout compass . We got to where we were going . Made it from Charleston Sc to LA Cali and back in 5 weeks on a 1967 Harley Sportster XLCH . we did about 400 miles a day and had a ball only got really lost 3 times and ended up with dinner an d a place to sleep twice. It was an adventure . PS most interstates were not complete back in 1967

Sounds like the venue is perfect for the GTA crowd.  I'll be bringing a car load of airguns, too, with some to sell or trade.  I'll be letting go of a few unusual modified Discoverys, some unique Marauder pistols, and a Quackenbush .357 Outlaw pistol, at the very least.
Hope to see lots and lots of folks there!!

The Vikings sailed with a piece of rock called a Sun Stone and got around pretty good.
They didn't even have a compass!!

A slightly unknown fact.....
Routes going north/south are odd numbers.
Routes going east/west are even numbers.

You are correct, Jeff; and the numbers start on the west coast (Interstate 5) going east for south to north roads - and from the southern border going north (Interstate 10) for west to east roads.)  This also hold true for US Highways and state roads.

Just off the phone with Hargis. We are both getting excited to see how our event turns out. We're already talking next year and making it bigger and better. LOL
He has approval for a LARGE air conditioned concession hall. We will have even more room next year for all of the vendors that will be sick they didn't make it this year. We have reserved 20 vendor tables already for this year. There will also be room outside the concession for vendors to bring and set up pop-ups if they want.
He is getting the two BIG military mess tents out and set up in the next couple of days. These will cover the firing line and will also be large enough for an airgun swap meet. Bring your airguns and tables, set up to show them off, sell or trade!!!
I still have plans to smoke some Boston Butts and serve them up Saturday. The GTA meal. :)
The SCUBA shop does not have portable equipment. They are located 20 minutes away. They have a cascade system and can fill 6-8 cylinders before having to recharge their system. They will charge $10 each and cylinders MUST have current hydro or they will not touch them. Hargis is trying to find someone else from a fire department or rescue squad to come out to the event to fill. Just be aware of the issues and bring plenty of air and maybe a compressor. :)
I'm bringing at least 2-4500 cylinders and maybe a 3000 if I have room. Then again, I may be pulling a trailer loaded.
Targets...we have several folks promising to bring targets. We need whatever you think Is fun to shoot. We have some steel plinkers and spinners coming. I have some for lower powered airguns. I'll try to build some target stands also. But if we all pitch in we can make this a great event and fun for all. We keep growing and hopefully by next year we won't need to ask for as much from you. :)
Hargis is going to try and get a load of firewood for campfires. There may be a charge for a bundle but not much. It will be well worth dropping a bit of money into the kitty for Hargis since he is donating the ENTIRE facility and property to us at no charge.
Anyway, one week from today I will be on site and doing final prep. WooHoo!!!!

See you all there...oh, and don't forget the discount code "GTA" to give them at the Ramada Inn!!!

I am getting pumped about this!!

Most definitely invite a guest or two. Glad you found a co-driver Lloyd. And company for the journey. We are always needing to introduce folks to our fun sport and to our GTA family. Hargis said he will be running radio ads also, so expect to see a lot of locals coning out to see what we're all about. Everyone be good ambassadors for the airgun community as well as for GTA.

Not sure if I mentioned this already but will again just in case, I will be bringing down a good portion of PA's dented tin collection to sell at the event. Lots of great pellets (most in more than acceptable shape) at DEEP discounts.

I'll be going through most of it to confirm inventory early next week. Let me know if there is anything yall are looking for!

sure wish I could be there with you guys, but it just ain't gonna happen for me.

If anyone has a decent pistol grip that will fit a stripped Mrod action I'd sure be interested in one. (actually 2 of them).
I remember asking about this quite some time ago and seeing a couple of examples.
I seem to remember that Mr. hill had done one I really liked, but also seem to remember that his was a one-off and they were too expensive to make for sale (?).
anyway, both my buddy Jeff and I would like to do our mrods as a bare bones action, grip, and collapsing butt stock.
does such a thing exist ?

both are Gen 1 models

Ron, like this?  The pic is of a Gen 1 rifle.  It is coming in a couple of months, possibly sooner.
The pistol grip has a very important safety modification.  More info here.

Yessir...and I've reposted that info a couple of times in this thread. There's a lot of good info and I realize it involves a lot of reading. But if you plan on attending, you should skim this entire 10 pages to pick up on some good event info.
:)
You have to actually call the Ramada Inn and tell them code "GTA" to get a discount. A room with two queen size beds for $69 a night. A great price IMO.

OKAY...good info here.
Hargis just contacted me and said if you book at the Sparta Ramada (which has a restaurant and pool) give them code "GTA". That will get you a two queen bed room for $69!!!
You have to call them to get this rate, you can't do it online.

DEz,  is there an update on the air situation?  Last I read there was no on-site filling.  Do I need to bring a SCBA?  Getting one checked my prove challenging but if necessary I will try.  Does the local dive shop mentioned have SCBA 4500 psi capability?  I plan to consume a serious volume of air ;)

Post by: ezman604 on May 08, 2015, 03:04:29 PM
Tom, if you CAN bring air, all the better. But I realize you are coming from CA and probably this is not reasonable for you. The SCUBA shop is 20 minutes away. That's the BEST I have so far from Hargis and his attempt to get someone there to supply air refills. I plan on bringing at least 2-4500psi SCBA cylinders as well as a 3000psi SCUBA cylinder. I am also bringing my Omega compressor but really just to demo and let folks see it and how it runs. I do not want to run it the entire event or enough to HAVE to rebuild it as soon as I get back home. :) It's just not made for that type of use. But I'll do what I can to help out with air. I usually do not get to shoot enough to have to refill a gun anyway. LOL
Sad but true.
So, I hope everyone brings and shares air if possible. We can make a run to the SCUBA shop with 5-6 tanks at a time if needed. They MUST have current hydro testing or they will not touch them.
And $10 per tank to fill. I hope Hargis can surprise us with fire and rescue or someone with a portable system that can show up for us.
:)

just as a food for thought,...

Maybe you guys could all pitch in and get a local weld shop to rent you a 6000psi big nitrogen bottle just for the weekend ?
That seems like it might could be a good way to keep the tanks topped off,  ? ? ?

Tom 1 6k nitrogen bottle wouldn't come close to supplying enough air. I run off a 6k tank here at the house. When we have our shoots here, 6 or 7 of us run PCP's, and we put a good dent in one of those bottles. That's just for 1 day shooting. I think multiple bottles, and all the charges that would go with them would be way over the top. I would look for a commercial diving company in the area. They may be able to bring one of their portables out. Don't have any idea what they would charge.

Not as a sole source. A 500 cu 6k is approximately 600 Marauders, filling them from 2-3k. That's quite a few fills.  :)

I sure am sorry to do this, but I have to ask.  Is our location north of I-71 or south of I-71?  You see, when I run the street address on Old 127, I get a location north of I-71, north of the truck stop and on a road called Old 127.  Then, when I run the coordinates, I get a location south of I-71, beyond another much smaller truck stop, where there is another piece of Old 127.  But, that road has concrete traffic blocks closing off the road where it joins what I presume is the New 127.

Maybe my Dr. was right. He said that the time has come for me to stop leaving the home alone, to stop thinking altogether and just wait for thoughts to come along ... kind of like fishing.  That I can do.  Fishing, I mean.

By the way, you can move me from the Maybe List over onto the I'll Be There list...even if it rains.  God forbid that I should get a little wet and actually shrink some!

What is the schedule of events for Sunday. My Friday and Saturday is busy, but might make it down Sunday if there are still events going on. I'm in Columbus, Ohio.

I have yet to meet Geoffrey, but if that's what he looks like, . . . or feels like, well, we'll just have to cut him some slack.  We can't all have grace, charm and a positive self image.

Geoffrey is an awesome guy, he and I spent some time together at the last shoot....

Sure wish I could make this one, but my targets will be there hopefully, God willing and the creek don't rise....

If anyone has a springer and would like to install a new spring or seal while at the GTA show,  I can bring a nice spring compressor and some ARH lubes.  Just let me know and I'll toss the gear in the van.  If it is a HW rifle,  I could even lend a hand - haven't worked on much else.

It CAN'T be in the middle of no where!
I found that years ago in Texas!
It was so far in the middle of no where that it took days to get some where other then no where!

A buddy and I took a motorcycle trip back in May of 1977.  We had taken the southern route from Iowa to California through Colorado.  Coming back, once we hit Las Vegas, we cut north and headed towards Salt Lake City.  About 1/2 way there, we saw a road sign with the name of a now unremembered town.  We were low on gas so we slowed so as not to miss the off ramp. Shortly thereafter the off ramp appeared:  a short stretch of pavement leading from the highway dead-ending into a set of tire tracks in the dirt some 20+ feet below.  At the bottom of the ramp was another sign with a directional arrow pointed west, and the pair of well worn tire tracks  heading directly west, through the dirt, into the sunset. That land was so flat and that pair of tire tracks continued for so long, at least as far as we could see, it looked for all the world as if they drove right into the heart of that late May sun. We decided we would rather run out of gas, if that be our fate, on the interstate than somewhere out in the middle of nowhere.  In my memory, that's still the most nowhere place I have ever come across.

If your coming from Chicago you should be taking 65 to Indianapolis. From there to Cincinnati on 74 is pretty good shape.
Take 275 around Sin City though as 74 is real bad on the North side last I was through there.
Watch your speed on 275 as it is a great place to get a ticket.
Best thing to do is try to plan your times so you avoid rush hours in major cities.
Better to sit at a Denny's for an hour or so then in rush hour traffic!

So far I saw, from Memphis to here, congestion in Louisville and others reported Cincinnati, Knoxville and of course Atlanta with interstate traffic at almost or total standstill at times.

Has been a year in planning.
Got here yesterday with a truck and trailer loaded. Starting to get things lined up and organized. Already gotten to see old friends and meet some I've been anxious to meet. This should be a great event and in talking to Hargis, will be even bigger and better next year. Hey, we haven't even officially kicked off this years event and we're already making plans for next year. :)
Safe travels everyone and really looking forward to seeing you.
Those that cannot make this event, you really need to experience this. Make plans for next year!!!
Don't let the fear of Rocker1 and his hammer keep you away. LOL
Here he is opening the gates to the event....
Thanks to  Nikoman for providing the great GTA banner!!!!

Man, I gotta stop reading this thread. It's killing me seeing all that I will be missing. Heck, even if I didn't take one shot there, just meeting so many of you guys I feel I know through this forum would be worth the 7-8 hour (or so) drive. There's a bunch that I'd like to thank in person too and shake their hand. Jason (NervousTrigger, Joe P...).

Hopefully next year...

Packing the car now.  Then picking up my buddy a few hours down the road. He's volunteered to do the rest of the driving.  Sweet!  I can rest and think about airguns.
Then another hour down the road to remember what we forgot to bring.  Should be there late this afternoon !
Oh Yeah ! Gonna be fun !!

Chardo is a nickname from home,  father was already using Arnold.   We should be there late tonight.

There's still plenty of camp space and you can arrive anytime. We generally start stirring around 7'ish and quit whenever. :)
Friday will be much like today. Just hanging out, talking, meeting, getting reacquainted, shooting, laughing, checking things out and shooting. Tomorrow will be the poker shoot around 10am. Then the GTA lunch and sometime afterwards the annual paintball competition. And this year, if we have enough participants, a big bore competition also. These will have trophies and gift certificates to the first and second place winners of the springer, PCP and big bore.
Come on out anytime and stay as long as you wish. Just have FUN at the Fun Shoot!!!

On my way.  Almost missed my flight.  I stopped to have dinner with my family on the way to the airport and the service was really slow.  Suddenly  i realized i might arrive late needing to check guns and get through  security With less than 45 minutes before flight time.  Luckily due to some very skillful driving and a prayer from my daughter I made it to the counter.  Oh no, lines everywhere!  Except for Frontier; no one at all.  Thanks to my daughter's beautiful and well timed prayer I'm on my way!   In Denver now and will arrive in Cincinnati at 5 am.

See you all soon....

Hold on folks. LOL
I JUST got back to the motel, had to have a meeting with us admins and Hargis to discuss our thoughts and opinions of the venue and if all of us want to try it again next year. We also appreciate the input from Dave and Monica Rensing as a vendor and QVTom as a staff representative. I'll get some photos posted in a bit. Just need a little time to catch my breath. LOL
I need to make a LONG post to give my thoughts, thanks and post my pictures. I have some stuff you won't believe except that I have pictures to prove it. LOL
But, after discussing things, we have decided to come bake to Gallatin County KY fairgrounds next year to make it bigger and better. The fairgrounds will be ours from 10-15 May 2016. Mark your calendars.
More info and pictures coming very soon. I've been at it since 4:30am this morning, so I really need a bit of sleep. I'll close for the moment with a big smile on my face and say this is a fantastic kind of tired. MANY thanks my great friends for making this event....FUN!!!!
More in a bit.

Had plenty of fun, shot plenty of guns. Reacquainted with old friends and fairly sure I made a few new ones. Though its kinda hard to tell due to the language barrier. Them Yankees sure talk funny. What we lacked in communication skills we more than made up for by tearing up a bunch of stuff with pellets.

I was able to drive up Saturday morning from Evansville, IN.  Left about 3:30am and drove over to the shoot (about 3 1/2 hr drive). Met Dez and a couple others  (I can't remember names), Lil Sis, Mr. Sis, Geoffrey K and his wife (they shared their canopy with me during the shoot) and a host of others. Had a great time and the lunch was wonderful. Saw some amazing air guns and vendors items for sale. Spent the day there, but, decided to drive back to E-ville and sleep in my own bed. Looking forward to next year and hoping things work out so I can make it.

I have seen some of the pics.  The place looks great.  Lots of space and long range shooting.  Noone got hurt with all the miscommunication between north and south that Richard was talking about :)  Noone tore up the lawn with their truck that I can see in the pcs, so it was a successful event :)   Wish I could be there but I have been working on a big migration since Friday night with hardly any sleep.

Hopefully I will come down with the Jersey boys or Long Island guys next year.  Great job Dez and Admins for another great event.

Funny how MY pulled pork turned out to be a job for our host. :)
Was not intended but SURE glad he stepped up and took over the coals while I was busy with the rest of the event. I can only take credit for getting the Butts, seasoning them and letting them marinade over night and tossing them on the smoker at 6am. Hargis handled it from there with GREAT talent!!! He done good. And Uncle Paulie? Who knew....what a darn good Joy-zee chef he was? How you gonna top that next year my friend???

Wow, what a great event!  Meeting new folks and old friends and shooting airguns and eating good food.  It doesn't get any better than that! My buddy Burke, who came with me and did the 8 hours of driving each way, (thank you Burke!) had the time of his life, too.
And that Kentuckian, Hargis, what a tremendous guy.  With him providing that great venue and all the effort HE personally put into the event, my hat is off to that gentleman.  And also to the many other good people who worked so hard and participated to make this such a great Fun Shoot.  And to Dave Easley and Teresa, again, thank you very very much.
The GTA is the best!

Lloyd, it was fantastic as always to see you my friend!!! And I was under the impression Burke was a newbie to airguns. I think I was mistaken. LOL
I'm glad he enjoyed the event too and hope he is a GTA member soon.
As for Hargis, you said it. What a fellow.
After working with him, there's absolutely nothing that man can't do or hasn't already done. But hey, what else would you expect from a Marine? :)
As retired military, I can affectionately say he's one of the best jarheads I've had the honor to meet. He and Amy are Energizer Bunnies when it comes to an event at the fairgrounds. We will have a better schedule next year and things will flow smoother I'm sure. We both learned a lot, and discovered USAF and USMC can work together well. Contrary to other beliefs.
HeeHee
Hargis was quite amazed at us airgunners and was all smiles MOST of the time. He learned a lot too this last week and weekend. Next year there will be a gun show going on at the entrance of the fairgrounds while we are having our Fun Shoot/Airgun Show. We will be ambassadors to the airgun community and imagine we will have a LOT of visitors coming to the airgun range to investigate.
Glad you guys made it home safe Lloyd. And really is a shame it will be a year before we get to shake hands and chat face to face again.
Title: Great Event!
Post by: chardosmith on May 18, 2015, 11:07:38 AM
What a great event.  Can't say enough about the hospitality of Hargis and the friendliness of the entire GTA administration team.  Chris and I took the 12 hour drive to Sparta from Arkansas and had an excellent experience that exceeded our expectations.  Large tents to keep the occasional cloudburst off the guns, dozens of targets from 10 - 80 yards, LOTS of cool rifles and several Vendors including Pyramyd air with dented pellets, Old English firearms with a broad selections of chinese and german rifles, custom discovery tuning upgrades, carbine stocks for pistols.  The best part was the wide range of shooters who just loved to wring the accuracy out of their rifles.  From a little HW30 to a Theoben Dual mag and a discovery to a Steyr LG110 and a 30 cal, the range of rifles was impressive.

Everyone was very generous with educating others about their rifles and even had some minor airgun tuning on site.

The competition was fun,  but the prize money was a pleasant surprise.  THANK YOU!  the $300 in prize money took care of my hotel and most of my gas costs!  Even came home with two fewer rifles and a little spending cash.  Look forward to next year!

Thank you GTA and Hargis for the great event.   I enjoyed myself, met some new people and reconnected with those I met last year.

I think the bell and 3 88gram CO2 cartridges I hung at about 75 yards were a hit.  I even managed to hit the bell at 75 yards with 3 of my rifles which made ME smile.

There were plenty of targets set out for all to shoot.

Photos I took at the event and a couple of the surrounding areas are posted at the link below.  GTA and Hargis are more than welcome to copy them for their use ( a footnote saying photo by Geoffrey Kroll would be nice ...  ;D  )

The Ramada inn was clean, though the pillows were hard and had less padding than my kitchen chairs.  LOL .. My wife ran to Walmart to grab us 2 new pillows as those did not make it when I was packing up my shooting stuff.  Next year they WILL come with me.

It was a short drive to the shoot from the Ramada and easy to get to from the shoot.  I would stay there again next year.

Geoffrey, it was good to see you and your wife again and glad you guys enjoyed the event. I want to thank you for bringing the bottles to use as targets. It was VERY hectic and I kept getting pulled away to do other things. Thanks for filling the bottles. I did manage to get the string cut and hung on the stands but never got around to punching the holes in the caps and actually get the bottles out there to shoot. My apologies, just too many things going on. We WILL use them next year, they are very resilient targets when filled and take a lot of abuse.
The Ramada will be my resting place next year too, instead of "Bates Motel". LOL They really messed up our reservations we had made back in November. We sent a list and plenty of reminders. Even the Ramada had some communication issues with us and the discount code. But we managed to get everyone settled in to a place to sleep. Again, the venue change was a learning experience for us. We pledge to do better next year.
And I took my pillows with me.

Had an excellent time at the shoot again this year- met many people that I didn't get to meet last year.
I got to shoot a lot of great  guns- much much fun. Thanks to all you guys who let me do that!
For any of you who couldn't make it- try to come next year. It's an excellent time for one and all!

The last night there, we found a nice little restaurant that had great food, reasonable prices, and a charming atmosphere.  I would highly recommend it for attendees next year.   Leaving the Ramada, take a right, away from the interstate, and go about 5 miles north to Warsaw KY.  You will come to a stoplight and "Jewell's on Main" is there on the right.  I had pork tenderloin medallions with apple glaze, red potatoes and caramelized onions, and Burke had blackened salmon with sauteed vegetables.  Delicious! A pleasant way to end a great weekend.

A friend, who couldn't make it asked, "Was the show good?".  This was my reply, "Yes, but it was more of a get together and shoot than show.  I sent a lot of lead down field as did everyone else.  Most of all, however, it was a chance to meet those guys (& a few gals) you had bantered with over the years on the GTA forum. The opportunity the shoot provided to build camaraderie and forge friendships was priceless.  Next year’s dates are already set."

Good Job Guys

Thanks GTA .

I have been around for a long time just don't post much due to my lack of typing skills. I only made it for Saturday and didn't pull one trigger but managed to put some faces to the names I have seen on here. I did manage to shoot the bull with a great bunch of guys and gals and that made it well worth the trip .
Easyman that little dab I handed to you wasn't near enough to repay what I have received from this great place . 10 times the amount wouldn't have been either.

Next year is marked and as long as the good lord is willing and the creeks don't rise .

Even though I haven't been posting much lately I have been a part of this forum for a LONG LONG time as a part of the original GTA and was back in within hours of the new GTA going live... I have spent thousands of hours in the chat room BS'ing and picking on (but mostly getting picked on) and being up to enough general tomfoolery(what happens in chat stay in chat lol!) to truly make everyone feel like family that I had never gotten to meet face to face... I had SO much fun at the shoot meeting face to face for the first time, people I have shared years of my life with online (especially Dez and David, Richard, Tyler, and Sis) and see some grow from kids to awesome adults(Tyler) got to meet people I have mad respect for(Lloyd and Tom) ... I got to Shoot guns I would never be able to touch.. I also met and made new friends and family from people I only knew in passing (ANY of you Jersey boys are ever over my way Y'all gotta place to crash!!) And to borrow some vernacular Joe... Sir you're a pisser! I got 6... no wait I need that dollar.. 5 bucks ANYTIME you wanna make a run at it LOL! Liz and Joel and every "dang" person there... Thanks for making it an amazing time!!!

Long story short.... all the new friends and family I made was well worth having to cut out early on sunday from my minor case of heatstroke/hangover...!!!

Hargis Thanks so much for putting up with us!! you was an amazing host I cant even start to say how awesome you and your lady was for all the things you did for EVERYONE..

And Dez.... I had tears in my eyes when you handed me that tank during the raffle! now no more having to hear you all giving me a hard time about pumping up my disco all the time!!!

And the million other things I have to say but don't have the literary talents to express..... Just Thank you to everyone for an amazing weekend!!!!

Not only did she need to go through this, but we needed each other to face this and get through it together. We had tears in our eyes several times over the last few days but mostly smiles. We leaned on each other throughout the event. Several folks looked to the skies and asked Gene to guide them as they pulled the trigger on either one of his airguns or one that he touched during his tuning days. She left with a great feeling of joy, pride and was glad she made the trip.
And the look on some of the members faces as I introduced her as CharlieDaTuna.com was priceless. HaaHaa

LOL FACT!

When I am talking or sharing about something that "trips my trigger" enthusiastic is the NICE way of putting things!! You add together my Autism with something I am passionate about like shooting, throw in the excitement of meeting so many awesome people and bubbling over is an understatement!!!!! I can almost ALWAYS be counted on to provide hours of entertainment when I go into a manic phase like I was all weekend! and even happier you all was goofy enough to put up with me!!! :) :)

THANK YOU TO THE GTA AND EVERYONE ELSE INVOLVED IN THIS YEARS FUN SHOOT!!!!
Way too many people to try to remember and name in this early hour of the day.
We had a great time, at a great location for this event. We was happy to meet everyone and can now put faces with some familiar names, along with meeting some good people that were new to us.
We will definetly be back next year and looking forward to needing at least 2 tables again next year.
I am very happy I made the decision to join the GTA!!!!
I now know how to get a bunch of people to run, that normally would not be running to hang up targets.
Hargis and Family were terrific hosts!!!! A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THEM!!!!
To all that could not make it, you definetly don't want to miss it next year.

It was great meeting all the people and especially the Jersy boys don't think the GTA will ever be the same after them and what ever you do don't let them goons get one on you. I laughed so much I hurt. Even though we had a language barrier it was great fun. A big thank you to Hargis he put a lot of work and effort in this get together. A big thanks to Dez also  the man never stops unless food is involved. Jeez just thanks to all that helped make this event a great time and I look forward to the next one.   David

I really enjoyed the weekend. I got to meet some very generous people who were enthusiastic about their sport and shared their knowledge and air guns. It was amazing to be able to shoot air guns that I otherwise wouldn't have even seen, had it not been for the fun shoot and the great people there. Thank you to all those who let me put my grubby hands on some real works-of-art. My pursuit of acquiring certain air guns has now turned into a "haunting", due to my exposure of Theobens, Whiscombes, Beemans, as well as a certain BSA Standard, that was so long, if you missed the target you could just knock it over with the barrel without leaving the shooting line. Thank you Arnold for your generosity, knowledge and humor. Thank you Craig for the previously stated reasons and for causing my new affliction, and thank you Jewels for the sporting beverages and the fine cigar! And thank you to the others who I forget your names. Thank you to all who put on a great event and I can't wait until next year. And Michael, you are a very talented and enthusiastic person, you make air gunning great!

Glad you've joined the GTA Steven and even more glad you showed up at the fun shoot.  You make a trip to Iowa and you can be exposed a little more. I'll be watching the mail close for that flash drive, but in the mean time, check your email.  I may be contacting you in the near future: BMW trouble on the way home. But knowing what I know now and what I'd be in for on the trip I'd still do it all over again.

;D X2 it has long been said that you can't judge a book by its cover and I have always judged those I am friends with by their deeds not their appearance. When I was still young and foolish many of my friends turned out to be very shallow and self absorbed and my best friends through life have not been "Pretty" but had huge amounts of heart and character . Most will give without looking for personal gain and from all I have seen of DEz and the majority of folks here but especially Dave, his blood and sweat is more give than take and if more emulated him the world would be a better place. Kudos to DEz from all the the posts on the 2015 Fun Shoot it was an enormous success in large part due to the leadership of Dave and the efforts all the staff and members and I look forward to the day we can meet so I can shake DEz's hand  8)

My wife and I were there Saturday for a while and enjoyed the event. We were the ones that most were probably asking "Who are those people?". I haven't spent much time on here posting, just lurking, so didn't really know anyone and didn't want to bother anyone. I am planning to upgrade the quality of my airgun collection soon and hopefully will be able to attend next year and participate. I did speak to Mrs. Curtis and will be ordering a trigger from her soon. She was very gracious to come and introduce herself to us and we enjoyed speaking with her.

The Saturday lunch was great and it was a first class event from our observation. Oh yes, and we won a Crosman Ammo Pouch in the "free" drawing. Thanks to whoever donated it. Didn't get a smell in the "paid" raffle but that's OK, it's for a good cause.

There is no reason to be humbled, flattered maybe cause I think everyone on this board thinks the same as I do I'm sure.  I for one am proud of you being able to take the reigns of this great board and run with it.  Not breaking stride, and more than once.  Maybe men aren't supposed to talk like this, however I for one has a little love in my heart for people like you.
Good luck and thanks for putting up with me and others like you do.

I wish you had bothered me, I would like to have shaken your hand. I was handling the drinks for the Saturday feast. I'm certainly glad you and your wife attended.
And glad you left with a small gift and a full belly. :)
The ammo pouch, well it was donated by me. Just something I thought I'd toss in the door prize mix.
I am very glad you got a chance to speak to Cathy. She is one heckova gal for sure. We need to support her any way we can so we all can continue to have the GRT/CBR trigger line available.

(I am just trying to find my way around on the Forum, Gene always tried to get me on here but I didn't understand how it worked, I just waited for updates from him on what was going on. )

Dave,
There is no reason to be humbled, flattered maybe cause I think everyone on this board thinks the same as I do I'm sure.  I for one am proud of you being able to take the reigns of this great board and run with it.  Not breaking stride, and more than once.  Maybe men aren't supposed to talk like this, however I for one has a little love in my heart for people like you.
Good luck and thanks for putting up with me and others like you do.
Bob

Beautiful post Bob.
Can't wait to finally meet all you guys next year at the shoot. Especially Dave. This year, there is an Illinois fun shoot this weekend, money is tight....

@ Cathy: You seem to be doing great on the message board!
Not only that, you spell better than most of us misfits.   :D

This year was a great event... Somewhat bittersweet for me, but at the same time a wonderful reunion! Great to see all the regulars and meet some people for the first time.

Ms. Cathy,

So glad you made it to the event, I was not able to make it this year but I have been to your home in Belton for the last two and yall were great hosts...

I hope to see you at the shoot next year, or if you get a chance to come on down to the low country you can come to one of the ones we have down here.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Cathy!
It was great to see you again this year and I am very glad you decided to make the long trip to be there again with this big family of unique characters.  I have never been much of a talker or a joiner, and usually find big social gatherings to be kind of awkward and intimidating. But this group, and folks like you,  make EVERYONE feel like a welcome, and valued member of the family.  That says a quite a bit about the legacy of the GTA and its founders and members.
Thank you very, very much,
Lloyd

Still compiling photos of the event. Thanks to Allan and Geoffrey for the high quality snaps. I will be sending Hargis a flash drive with all of our pictures for him to compile and make us a disk. If anyone else has some good quality snaps to share, please let me know. I'd like to get this in the mail to him tomorrow if possible.
THANKS all!!!

Jump drive mailed to Hargis today for him to build us a slide/video show of the event. I'll get it posted on youtube as soon as he gets it to me.

On another note, I need to give a special recognition and thanks to a few of our folks.
Sunday there were very few of us left hanging around. Hargis wanted the tents left up until sometime Sunday so the rain could dry off them before tearing them down and packing them away. I want to give a very special thanks to MichaelM, Shawn (smack6969) & Tom (QVTom) for helping Hargis tear down the tents Sunday. Excellent to represent GTA guys!!! Many thanks from all of us.

As much as I would like to take credit all I did was help get the big tent down on the ground.. I was so sick on Sunday (entirely my fault for not staying hydrated enough during the weekend(and maybe a couple drinks on sat night)) after we got it down I had to leave to make it home.... It was Shawn and Tom that did all the major work and deserves the credit!!!!

Next year if you all see me walking around without a bottle of water in my hand holler at me and threaten to shoot me..... if you see it again... grab a 10 meter gun and actually do it... I promise I will be gratefull

That would be great, Steve, but the problem is really that there was just so much happening that it was one of those times the only way to describe it is "You just had to be there!" I really do not think any one person could possibly relate the account of all that went on over the course of the shoot in one post. I think you'll just have to read this years posts and make plans for next year. I'll tell you one thing, I have never in my 66 years ever seen so many folks in one place with a perpetual, ear to ear grin on their collective faces for so many days in a row! And I was at Woodstock! Just goes to show that the GTA bridges all barriers, even the language barrier, I'm still trying to figure out half of what David(Rocker) and Richard(Ambi550c) were talking about! LOL! Just one special shot for Joe....Im guessing Y'ALL is a town just north of the fairgrounds! :o :o :o

This is all EXACTLY correct.... there is literally so many small defining moments of gatherings like this that if your not there its just to hard to explain in words...actually words just aren't adequate enough to describe....

Steve, I'm not sure, my guess would be 47 not counting the wives that showed up.  I was only there Friday night and Saturday, then it was over.  I had a room for Sunday night too, but simply went home, because everyone told me they were leaving early Sunday morning?  When I get a chance, I want to tell the tale of meeting Joe P on Friday night, and our adventure at the pool hall.  It rained almost all of Saturday, but did not dampen our spirits.  Competitions, drawings, food, all really great ..... but the absolutely most fun for me, was meeting the members, and finally putting a face to avatars and forum names.  After the videos and all the pics are compiled and ready to view, they will be worth thousands of words ... as the saying goes.

Hey Guys!

Ridge Runner here!  You guys will remember me as Lloyd's chauffeur at the Fun Shoot.  I just wanted to let all of you guys and gals know that I had a fantastic time at the Shoot and I wanted to thank each and every one of you for being allowed to hang out with you!  I learned so much from talking with you and had a fantastic time shooting all of the different air rifles!  Why I have waited so long to join this forum is beyond me.

I am looking forward to chatting with you more and possibly getting together at other events in the future.

Thank you!

Glad to see you here. And was great to meet you and shake your hand. I have to say I was under the impression you were not an airgunner. I was quite surprised and will try not to assume again. :)
Really glad you decided to accompany Lloyd on the long drive and hope to see you next year also!!!
Till then post often and post pictures of your airgun adventures.
And as always....
SAFE & Happy Shooting!!!!

It was such a great weekend and honestly I didn't want it to end.

As far as helping goes, it was my pleasure!

Also, I would like to note that early Sunday afternoon Paul Brooker and his friend stopped by.  They were disappointed that the festivities had basically ended.  They did shoot the 357 Slayer, a .22 Pro Sport and a .22 HW100.

I would like to thank Paul Brooker and his friend for pitching in and helping take down the remaining tents and in general straightening up as well.

Shawn

I am not near as much of an airgunner as I would like to be.  My truly better half wisely keeps the "little boy" in line and a tight rein on the budget.  I was a kid in a candy store at the Shoot.  You guys let me play with your toys all I wanted and I still did not have time to play with them all.

I certainly do hope to be able to attend next year.  I think my wife has already penciled it in for me.  I am also planning on going to the show in Hickory, NC this fall.  It has been a while since I have been able to do that.  I bemoan the end of the Roanoke show.

Late is better than not at all, so let me say that I also had a good enough time to insure that I will come back again next time.  I didn't get to do any shooting this time, so it must be that incredible brisket that won me over.  I sure hope that the brisket becomes a permanent feature of the weekend.

Speaking of "weekends", I would politely like to request, if nothing changes, that the event is actually advertised for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  There is nothing wrong with that ... in fact, it looks like that is what most of the people like.  Had I known, the only difference it would have made for me would have been to make my plans to fit that schedule, instead of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  You can bet that I will arrive at sunup on Thursday next time.

I am very happy to have met as many people as I did.  For some strange reason I kept getting the old, familiar feeling that I was back in Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood again.  I think it had something to do with the shooting and the rain.

Thanks everyone.

John

John, it was great to see you there and meet you. And I certainly hope you return next year. The event has always traditionally been Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday being the main arrival and meet & greet day, Saturday being the main event day and eating and Sunday generally cleaning up and doing a bit of final shooting, wheeling and dealing or packing and saying goodbye. Hargis has the entire week scheduled for us so if you or anyone else wishes to come out early, go for it. We can always use an extra hand setting up also. :)
See you and everyone else there next time!!!
Will see about the Boston Butt smoking again but I'd guess yes. Seemed to work out really well and Hargis and crew did a fantastic job. I got it ready and was SUPPOSED to handle the cooking but thankfully Hargis stepped up since I was up to my ears in the happenings.

I was just thumbing through this thread and reliving the moment so to speak. Actually, my brother-in-law and tournament fishing partner was asking if I was going to BE his fishing partner next year. Seems the last two Austin Peay Bass Tournaments have been scheduled the same time as our fun shoot. Thankfully not our next one. I get to fish the tournament and the next week/weekend is our fun shoot.
It was very refreshing to reread this thread. I will say I'm glad most folks are at lunch and did not pass by my office. I had a mixture of laughter and tears flowing from me. :)
All members new and old should read or reread this thread. It is the BEST reminder of what we are all about and why we gather here!!!!
I'm still waiting on Hargis to finish our video but he is a VERY busy fellow. He is kinda like me in that he tends to over commit. Teresa tells me one of my major faults is not knowing how to say "no". I tend to agree.
Anyway, be sure to mark your calendars for the GTA Annual Fun Shoot/Airgun Show 2016. He has the entire week blocked off for us starting 10 May 2016 so you can show up early if you want.
Stay tuned for more info as we get closer. That is, if I can get Mr. Davis' attention for a few minutes.

Hargis,
Very nice job of capturing everything and putting this little bit of airgun history together for all of us. And thank you very, very much for hosting all the GTA folks on your piece of paradise in Kentucky.  Even though its been less than a year, these pictures reminded me of how quickly the memories of these great times can slip away.  Glad you, and the others, saved them for us!
I had a wonderful time in 2015, and I, along with my airgun buddy Burke, will see you again in 2016.  I think Burke is already starting to pack, LOL.
