A friend of mine has always shot his 880 using BBs. Literally thousands of them. Recently he tried shooting pellets. They were very accurate, almost the same hole at 50 ft. Certainly a lot better than BBs. I have always heard that BBs would ruin the rifling. Didn't happen in this case. So I am wondering if this is an urban myth or there is actually proof out there that BBs are a bad deal for the 880. Or did the fact that he was always using the copper coated BBs make a difference since copper is softer than steel. Also he didn't put 10 pumps in for each BB shot. Even with as easy as it is to pump the 880 he still would have looked like Popeye had he done that much pumping.

Just my opinnion but I think it was just an assumption that steel BB's would harm the rifling. The copper coating surely helps. The .171 (approximate) BB's also are smaller than the .177 barrel. The rifling in an 880 is not the same as a dedicated lead pellet gun. It's not as good but it is made specifically to deal with lots of BB's and still spin a lead pellet.

Didn't the earlier versions of the 880's have smooth barrels? With the 881 being rifled? Maybe he has an earlier version?

might be related to the qulaity of the barrels back in the day.....
Ive heard that for many of the guns that are dual ammo.....

I'd like to find and try those 'Perfect rounds' I think Beeman called them.
Weren't they lead bb's ?
Anybody ever use them ?
At $35 I am not concerned about my barrel, I'd hope to find the time to shoot It to death.

I WISH mine was more accurate with BBs so I could do lots of plinking with them. The only reason I don't shoot BBs through it is because it sprays them like a shotgun. I have plenty of nice air rifles to shoot pellets with; I'm interested in a cheap and reasonably accurate BB plinker. I have a smooth bore Powerline 35 on the way. I hope it shoots well with BBs.

Stay tuned with Geo. He has put a 499 barrel onto an 880 and gotten excellent small groups at shorter ranges. Just a quick prototype so far. He is also working on a hopup system, similar to the airsoft guns, to put spin on the BBs to improve accuracy. In time we will have accurate BB plinkers that have potential for hunting as well.

You're right. I remember way back when I bought my 881, I purposely bought that particular model instead of the 880 because of the rifled barrel. I wish I still had it.

Tom, where you got that info from with this prototype from Geo. I was just recently on his Airgun Universe Website, and there is nothing at all even mentioned about any project like that? Just a little nosy, that would be a real good winner for a accurate BB gun.
Hope to hear more about it, I for sure keep my eyes peeled on this topic.

I have a vintage crosman 788 BB Scout. It's small. Looks like a kid's rifle. Shoots bb's (500fps) with some power and is surprisingly accurate.

I have a vintage crosman 788 BB Scout. It's small. Looks like a kid's rifle. Shoots bb's (500fps) with some power and is surprisingly accurate.

That is not that bad ($44.50 + $10.85 shipping). About in line with the M35 and 760 today. But I fear that it is not grooved for a scope for those of us who are visually less sharp as we used to be.
