What is a good way to remove this scale-like stuff from the brass? Is there a way to remove the black top finish from the nickel plating?
At a local gun show, last weekend. In rough shape cosmetically but it is all there and the solder joints look sound. Has a steel rod brazed in for a bolt handle. On disassembly, the valve looks to have been starved of oil. Corrosion in the valve looks like it was in a water heater instead of an airgun. What is a good way to remove this scale-like stuff from the brass? Piston cup is the solid, flat-faced type. Wood is pretty dinged up but salvageable. Is there a way to remove the black top finish from the nickel plating? Forgot to take any "before" pictures, darn it.
So, now I have four. A 1971 342, a 1962 312, pre-1951 317 and early 50's 312. I got these for 50-70 dollars each over the last few years. Added the peepers myself, of course. They are all fine shooters.

Wear gloves, goggles and a mask if indoors. Use a shop rag as an applicator. Rinse with water when finished.

A mask won't do diddly to filter/remove the acid fumes.
My 310, 317, and favorite 312. The 312 fires 650 fps at 8 pumps. Real thumper.
