Title: Any 100yd indoor shooting experience?
Post by: FastJ on December 07, 2022, 03:16:13 AM
Hello

Had yesterday second testing 100yd indoors range.
Some reason results go worse than normally have outdoor range.

So anyone else experienced similar?

Couple months ago there was absolutely no wind day my outdoor range and results was bad also. So got me thinking do these need some wind to stabilize?

Have normally like 0.6moa groups. Now they was like 1-1.5 moa.

Picture is comparing 1:14 and 1:18 liners. 5 and 10 groups

There is an 85 yard indoor range in Fort Worth.   I think the ventilation system creates weird winds.  I have had bad luck in there past 50 yards with my .177 field target rifles.

Never shot long range indoors.
I have shot long range into a door!
Fords, Chevies, Dodges, etc.

Could that low air movement cause it?
Place where can test is long factory hall. There is four ventilation units along straight.
But hardy feel airflow and wind meter blades not even turning.
Current setup 2-3mph side wind is like 0.1mil 100yd

Have never shot indoors long range personally, but have seen videos and reviews of 100 yard indoors. Shooters mentioned air turbulence from the ventilation system indeed affected groups to some degree.

Air handling systems, can move POI, I had a large squirrel cage fan in my 10m range and when the fan was on high I would get varying POI, turn the fan off hole in hole. This is with low power air rifles. There was a commercial where a football field goal was redirected by the ventilation system ;)

You are probably dealing with turbulent air, or air flow, not “wind” hard to measure with a wind meter. Throw a slow flying paper air plane or hold a piece of paper on a string or a bunch of them held up by a balloon in path of flight if you want to see the effects.

Seema a couple of years ago someone posted pics of some guys in Norway or Denmark who rented a long narrow unused building with low ceilings. A fish processing building or something like that. They were shooting 100 yards and were all using German springers with fixed barrels. They had room for about a half dozen shooter on the firing line.

I wondered if in this part of GA. or S.C. one could find an old unused chicken barn to rent to shoot in. Some seem at least 100 yards long. You'd have to get past the smell. Never pursued it.

Thanks for answers. So looks like indoors are far from ideal for shooting BR

Talked couple guys who have tested 500m indoors powder burners.
Luckily even hit a target.
Both said its air moving by temp differences and turbulence caused previous bullet.

This is subject where cannot found just like any info from internet.

Heard during this discussion even outdoors with .51cal if shoot next shot after 3-4seconds to 1800yd will be all over the place because previous bullet turbulence.

Around here we have Golden Plump Turkeys and there are hundreds of turkey barns over 100 yards long. They "rest" the barns to sanitize them from the bird flu among other illnesses every year between flocks. With the curtains down, its windless (just pinch your nose) and noiseless.

I've shot in them twice, stinky but perfect for establishing the capability of your gun. I was calibrating a Ruger 10/22 custom for competition at the time.
