Title: Which Scoring/Group Size Program/App and Why?
Post by: rsterne on November 19, 2022, 01:46:20 PM
I have looked at the On Target Precision Calculator for Windows, and the Ballistic-X App for Android (those are the two OS's I have), and both look pretty good.... I have read negative comments about shortcomings in the Ballistic-X App, and on his website it looks like he is changing from a $7.99 one time license (still available) to a $9.99/yr. business model.... great for him, but I'm not interested!.... The On Target program can use a scanner (which I have) for input (at home, of course), and I am more comfortable using a computer than a tablet (no cellphone service here, so little experience with it).... However, while their initial $11.99 is reasonable, they have an additional program that costs $34.99 which I don't know if I need or not.... There may be other programs I don't know about....

My question is this.... Have you used either or both of these, and what are the plus and minus features of each?.... Does one have (or lack) a feature that drives you nuts?.... Do you use something else, same questions?.... Any other comments helpful to someone that has never used a program for measuring groups and their location would be most appreciated....

Using only ballistic-x

Super easy. Just take photo. Set reference, distance, caliber, point of aim then impacts.

Only annoing is with touch screen sometimes hard get it just exactly point.

That's why I was wondering if the windows based "On Target" which uses a Mouse might be easier, with the much larger screen?....

Bob,

Have you looked at Taran?  It's open source, and does everything I've needed it to do.  There's an online version, and a downloadable version.  Both use a web browser interface.  What it doesn't do is scoring (and perhaps lots of things compared to the pay software you mentioned?) but it does group analysis, and it does put a caliber-sized dot on the screen (target image) where you tell it to, so you can score ring cuts much easier than by eye, and then do your own scoring.  The interface is a little quirky, but once you learn what the icons mean, it becomes very quick to use.
