Keith, it was certainly fortunate you happened to see that groundhog scurrying back right when you did, otherwise you may not have noticed until more of your garden was invaded!I am hoping for a possible ground hog hunting video...
I was gonna suggest putting some cherry tomatoes on something near the shed. The one I shot a couple of summers back was on its back legs reaching up to pull my tomatoes off the vine when I shot it through the head. GH's are just oversized ground squirrels. The one I shot last August was eating the persimmons that were falling off my tree.
If it looked like it was digging for worms/grubs; then it was a skunk or a coon-we have some free-range chucks that help mow the yard for us (and provide a source of emergency "ground chuck" if the need should arise ). and I have never seen one do anything like that. They are also daytime-only critters; with the most activity early morning and late afternoon, or whenever they learn is the time that you're not home and they can get into the no-chuck zones... Good thing you nailed him; if he had time he could have done some serious undermining of the shed foundation; plus just about wiped out your garden...Jesse
This was the big booger I shot last August under the persimmon tree.
I've noticed that they really seem to LOVE cantaloupe... The guts and rind is fine to use- that way, you're not wasting the meat of the fruit. Just in case you need the info in the future.
Don't be surprised if you spot another, spring mating season you know, the mate won't be too far away and may come looking for the other.
