Sight inserts

Figured I would wonder down here and ask you guys this question...
I have just gotten an FWB 300S and I am looking at either scoping it, or keeping the target sights on it. I have been shooting with it in my basement, just to get use to the sight picture and get more trigger time.
I have been trying to find some inserts for the front globe sight, and am running into a lot of different types and styles.
So what I am wondering is......
What inserts can I use for the front sight?
Are they all a standard size? or are they different depending on the rifle and the globe?
What is the difference between the acrylic inserts, and the plastic one.
Is there one that is better than the other? or are they all fairly the same?
Are the smaller finer lined sights more fragile? or are they fairly well protected inside of the globe?
Thanks in advance for all the advice guys.

On the metal inserts, there is a horizontal bar connecting the outer ring to the inner ring. The metal insert has ears that slip into notches on the sight tube to keep the bar horizontal. The bar is used to help determine if the rifle is being held vertical w/o a cant. Or to use to repeat the same amount of cant.
The plastic inserts do not have a horizontal bar. So you loose this horizontal reference point. But some like it because it lets more light into the front sight.
I think your FWB uses an 18mm insert (my insert measures about 17mm).
I think this is what you want
http://www.champchoice.com/prod-CHAMPION_S_CHOICE_CLEAR_INSERT_SET__10___Sm_Dia_-677.aspx
They show it as "out of stock."
Also at Champion Shooters:
http://www.championshooters.com/store/product.php?productid=531&cat=325&page=3
Again, CALL them to verify that it will fit a FWB300 front sight.
You can also try contacting Pilkington's
www.pilkguns.com
and ask if they have the front sight insert set for a FWB300.
There are certain standard sizes, but I don't remember which rifles (brand and models) use which size.
FWB used the 18mm insert on the 300 then they switched to a larger 22mm on their later rifles.
Some brands and models used the 18mm insert, and others used different sizes.
The sight tube that you put the insert into protects the insert.
That is unless you use a glass insert, and your RAP the front sight on something hard.
On the plastic inserts, the thickness of the black circle is determined by the angle of the bevel on the edge of the center hole. Typically the inserts have a thinner circle than the adjustable irises, and are a LOT cheaper.
Now as to determining which insert size to use. This is what I was taught:
#1 - You want enough white around the target so the eye does not strain. An aperture that is VERY close to the size of the target will cause the eye to strain to see the white ring. One guideline is to use an aperture such that the width of the white ring around the black bull is approx 1/2 the diameter of the black bull.
#2 - You want to select an insert size, such that the target remains INSIDE the aperture of the insert most of the time. If the target spends a lot of time outside the circle, you will tend to grab at the shot (and jerk the trigger) when the target comes into the circle. Depending on how steady your hold is on a particular day, you may have to use a larger insert or a smaller insert. This is why having a set to select from is useful.

Dang I love this site!!
Always great advice.
So with the plastic sights, I am assuming that they are just pressed in? They look like a large disk with a hole in them, then the bevel to create the "dark" area around the actual hole in the insert. These wouldn't need to be centered as the hole should be in the center.... correct?
I had the same sights on my .22lr, but took the sight off for scoped use. I took the entire assembly apart to see how it worked. So no stranger to the workings of how to switch them out and that stuff.
So the advantage of the clear inserts is ..... that you can see the entire target and have nothing in the way of the target it self.
The advantage of the metal inserts is that you have the reference lines for vertical and horizontal.
So then it really comes down to which one you like more.
And just make sure that I get the 18mm sights.
Will have to look around on those sights and see what I find..
Thanks for the quick reply.

On the front sight tube, there is a knurled ring. Some sights have 2 rings, on the front and back of the sight tube.
Unscrew the ring, remove the metal insert, drop in the plastic insert into the tube, screw the ring back in (to hold the insert in place).
The hole is in the center of the insert, so it is always centered.
For me the other advantage of the clear insert over the metal insert is with multi target targets, a target with multiple bulls/images. The clear insert makes it easier to find the one target out of the many targets on the paper that you want to shoot. The bar on the metal insert makes it harder to find the specific target, so I've double shot some of my targets. For single bull targets, this is not a factor.
Some people prefer the plastic inserts because of the additional amount of light that comes thru the front sight. The additional light just makes aiming easier on their eye. This might be a reason that FWB switched to a larger 22mm front sight on their later rifles.
There is only a horizontal bar on the metal insert, at least on the metal inserts that I've seen. So you only have a horizontal reference, no vertical reference.
You have to shoot the rifle with both inserts and see which insert YOU prefer.
Heck you might even use metal for single bull targets and plastic for multi bull targets.
One more thing, when you store the rifle, REMOVE the rear sight. This is to prevent damage to the rear sight during transport and storage. I put my rear sight into a plastic file box that is labeled FWB-300. I also put the inserts and other small items for the rifle in that box. So when I shoot, I grab the rifle and the box and I have everything for the rifle.
